Marked by darkness

Elena sat on her bed that night, staring at the ceiling as the events of the evening played over and over in her mind. The vampires. Damien’s cruel smile. Lucien’s hand gripping hers like a lifeline, his voice filled with raw danger as he claimed her in front of them. She had stepped into a world she barely understood, and now, there was no way out. A soft knock on her window shattered the silence. Elena bolted upright, her heart racing. She turned slowly, expecting to see nothing—but he was there. Lucien. He stood just outside her window, his dark hair tousled by the night breeze, his pale skin glowing faintly in the moonlight. His eyes, dark and endless, were fixed on her. Without thinking, Elena slid off the bed and crossed the room, her bare feet silent against the wooden floor. She opened the window, the cool night air brushing against her skin. “What are you doing here?” she whispered. “I had to make sure you were safe,” Lucien said softly, his voice carrying a hint of something that sounded almost… worried. “After what happened tonight, I couldn’t stay away.” Elena’s chest tightened. There was something different about him tonight—something vulnerable beneath his usual calm, distant exterior. “I’m okay,” she said. “You scared them off.” Lucien sighed, running a hand through his hair. “It’s not that simple, Elena. Damien won’t stop. He’s testing me, trying to find a weakness. And if he realizes that you’re my weakness…” He trailed off, his jaw tightening. Elena swallowed hard. “What do you mean?” Lucien hesitated, as if weighing how much to tell her. Then he stepped closer, leaning against the windowsill. “In my world, obsession is dangerous,” he said quietly. “It binds us. It consumes us. And once it takes hold, it’s impossible to break.” Elena’s heart skipped a beat. “Are you saying you’re… obsessed with me?” Lucien’s eyes locked onto hers, and for a moment, the intensity of his gaze stole her breath. “Yes,” he admitted, his voice barely a whisper. “I’ve tried to fight it, but it’s too late. You’re in my blood now, Elena. And that means I’ll do anything to protect you—even if it means losing myself.” Elena’s mind spun. She should have been terrified. She should have been running as far away from him as possible. But instead, all she felt was a strange, aching pull toward him—a pull she couldn’t explain. “Is that why they think I belong to you?” she asked. Lucien nodded. “In vampire society, claiming a human is… permanent. It means you’ve marked them as yours, in body and soul. They think I’ve done that to you.” Elena’s breath caught in her throat. “But you haven’t… have you?” Lucien’s gaze darkened, and for a moment, he didn’t answer. Then, slowly, he reached out and brushed a strand of hair away from her face, his fingers cold against her skin. “Not yet,” he said softly. “But if it’s the only way to keep you safe, I will.” Elena’s heart pounded so hard she thought he might hear it. She should have been afraid of what he was saying—of what it meant. But instead, all she could think about was the way his touch made her feel. Like she was falling into the darkness—and she didn’t want to stop. “Will it hurt?” she asked, surprising herself with how calm she sounded. Lucien’s eyes widened slightly, as if he hadn’t expected the question. Then he smiled—a slow, dark smile that sent a shiver down her spine. “Not if I do it right,” he said, his voice like silk and shadows. For a long moment, they just stared at each other, the air between them thick with unspoken words. Then, finally, Lucien stepped back, his expression serious once again. “I won’t do it unless you’re sure,” he said. “It’s your choice, Elena. But if you let me mark you, there’s no going back. You’ll be bound to me—forever.” Elena’s pulse raced. Forever. The word should have scared her, but instead, it filled her with a strange sense of peace. “I’ll think about it,” she said softly. Lucien nodded, his dark eyes lingering on her for a moment longer. Then, without another word, he vanished into the night, leaving Elena alone with her racing heart and the overwhelming knowledge that her life was about to change forever.
