Elena’s blood ran cold as Aldric’s words hung in the air like a death sentence.
“Surrender the girl… or watch her die.”
Lucien stepped in front of her, his body coiled with tension. His eyes burned with rage, but his voice, when he spoke, was eerily calm.
“That’s not going to happen, Aldric,” Lucien said. “Tell Damien if he wants Elena, he’ll have to go through me.”
Aldric chuckled, a sound as cold as winter wind. “Do you really think you can protect her? You know how this ends, Lucien. You’ve seen it before.”
Lucien’s fists clenched, but he didn’t respond.
Elena felt a surge of fear, but she refused to let it control her. She stepped out from behind Lucien, her chin held high.
“I’m not afraid of you,” she said, her voice steady despite the terror coursing through her veins.
Aldric’s crimson eyes gleamed with amusement. “Brave little human,” he said, tilting his head as if studying her. “But bravery won’t save you.”
Elena glared at him. “Neither will threats. We’re not going to give you what you want.”
Aldric’s smile faded, and for a moment, his expression was pure menace. “You should choose your words carefully, girl. You’re standing on the edge of a very dangerous cliff.”
“And you’re standing in our way,” Lucien growled, his voice low and deadly. “Leave. Now.”
For a moment, Aldric didn’t move. Then, slowly, he smiled again—a cold, calculating smile that made Elena’s skin crawl.
“Very well,” he said. “But you can’t hide forever, Lucien. Damien will find you. And when he does… you’ll wish you had listened to me.”
With that, he turned and vanished into the shadows, leaving behind only the echo of his laughter.
Elena let out a shaky breath, her legs feeling like they might give out beneath her. Lucien turned to her, his eyes full of worry.
“Are you okay?” he asked, gently taking her hands in his.
Elena nodded, even though she felt anything but okay. “Who was that?”
“Aldric,” Lucien said grimly. “One of Damien’s most loyal followers. He’s almost as dangerous as Damien himself.”
Elena shivered. “Do you think he’ll come back?”
Lucien’s jaw tightened. “Yes. And next time, he won’t just be delivering a message.”
Elena swallowed hard, fear tightening her chest. But she wasn’t going to let fear win. She looked up at Lucien, her eyes filled with determination.
“Then we’ll be ready,” she said.
Lucien stared at her for a moment, and then he pulled her into his arms, holding her tightly.
“We’ll get through this,” he whispered. “I promise.”
Elena closed her eyes, letting the warmth of his embrace chase away the cold fear that had taken root in her heart. But deep down, she knew that the danger was far from over.
Damien was coming for them. And when he did, everything would change.
