By nightfall, the plan was in motion. The three of them—Elena, Lucien, and Mia—stood near the edge of the woods, the air thick with tension and the scent of pine. They were waiting for someone—or something—and every rustling leaf sent Elena’s heart racing.
“Are you sure this is safe?” Mia asked, glancing uneasily at the dark woods.
“No,” Lucien admitted, his sharp gaze scanning the trees. “But it’s necessary.”
Before Elena could ask what that meant, a sudden breeze swept through the clearing, carrying with it a strange, metallic scent. Elena tensed, and Mia grabbed her arm.
“Something’s coming,” Lucien said, his voice low.
A figure emerged from the shadows, moving so silently that Elena didn’t hear a single footstep. It was a woman—tall and regal, with pale skin, silver hair that flowed down her back like liquid moonlight, and eyes as dark as the night. She wore a long, flowing cloak, and her presence was both mesmerizing and terrifying.
“Lucien,” the woman said, her voice smooth as silk. “It’s been a long time.”
“Selene,” Lucien replied, inclining his head slightly. There was tension in his voice, but also a hint of respect.
“Who’s she?” Mia whispered, leaning closer to Elena.
“An old ally,” Lucien murmured, though the word “ally” sounded uncertain.
Selene’s gaze shifted to Elena, and a slow, knowing smile spread across her lips. “So, this is the human girl who’s caused so much trouble. Interesting.”
Elena swallowed hard, resisting the urge to step back. There was something unsettling about Selene, something ancient and powerful.
“We need your help,” Lucien said, stepping protectively in front of Elena. “Damien and Viktor are after her. We can’t fight them alone.”
Selene raised an eyebrow. “And why should I risk my people for you, Lucien? The last time we fought together, it didn’t end well.”
Lucien’s jaw tightened. “Because Damien is a threat to all of us. If he gains control, he won’t stop with me. He’ll come for you next.”
Selene considered this for a moment, then sighed. “You always did have a flair for the dramatic. Very well. I’ll help you—but on one condition.”
“What condition?” Lucien asked warily.
Selene’s eyes gleamed. “When this is over, you owe me a favor. A big one.”
Lucien hesitated, clearly reluctant, but after a moment, he nodded. “Agreed.”
Selene smiled. “Good. Then let’s get to work.”
As she turned to leave, she cast one last look at Elena, her expression unreadable. “Be careful, little human. You’re playing a dangerous game.”
With that, she vanished into the shadows, leaving behind only the faint scent of roses and blood.
Elena let out a shaky breath. “Well, that was… intense.”
Lucien nodded. “That’s Selene. She’s powerful, but she’s not someone you want to cross.”
“Are you sure we can trust her?” Mia asked.
“No,” Lucien said honestly. “But right now, we don’t have a choice.”
As they headed back toward Elena’s house, Elena couldn’t shake the feeling that Selene’s warning had been more than just a passing comment.
Because deep down, she knew that the game they were playing wasn’t just dangerous—it was deadly. And if they weren’t careful, it could cost them everything.
