Winnie rubbed her hazy eyes as the morning sun's rays flitted into her room.
She could verify that it was a few minutes past seven in the morning by looking at the wall clock.
“Oh my god
I will arrive at work late.”She threw herself from the bed.
According to the employment letter she received, she should return to work by 10 AM.
Winnie did not drink coffee, but she could not sleep the previous night because she was thinking about her new job.
She would be working for the first time ever. She has never had a job in her life.
She lacked the fundamental abilities needed to communicate with others, much less in a big company like Daxton's.
Winnie was sure she would succeed in her new job, regardless.
She was prepared to cling to the words of support Melissa had written, which were also adhered to her head like a tattoo.
After taking a quick shower, she changed into her finest attire, a blue gown that completely encased her body.
Despite having little time, Winnie spent a lot of time grooming herself in front of the mirror.
On her first day of work, she would not want to appear so dishevelled.
She hoped that her attractiveness would make a good impression.
“You can do it, Winnie. Be brave and resilient.” Winnie exhaled as she left her room.
“There is nothing to be afraid of.”
By the time she reached the living room, Melissa was already up and waiting for her to leave.
She hurried to give Melissa one last embrace before she finally left for a new city, tears streaming down her eyes.
“Ma'am, you will be missed.
I still feel bad for abandoning you.” She wept.
Winnie tried to contain her tears as she said, “I think we can do a lot.”
It never occurred to her that she would be separated from Melissa's face for so long.
“It is alright.
Your condition will only improve.”
Melissa reassured Winnie.
“Outside, your taxi is waiting for you. I deposited funds into your account.” Melissa assured her that it would be sufficient for her to obtain a flat until she could settle down.
Winnie could not find the right words to describe her excitement. She cried uncontrollably.
As if that were not enough, Melissa had already helped Winnie carry her bags to the vehicle that would transport her to her new surroundings.
“I swear I will not let you down.” Winnie promised Melissa that she would constantly work to make her proud.
Her waves to Melissa continued until she reached the car.
Winnie finds it painful to leave everything behind and move to a new city to start over, even though it was for a better purpose.
She now has the opportunity to live among strangers that she has never even met. It was not something she had anticipated.
In the absence of planning, Winnie managed to rent a modest flat for a week.
No matter how difficult it was, she could not afford to miss her first day of work.
When Winnie arrived at the company's location, her level of anxiety skyrocketed.
Winnie was frightened not only by the enormous structure of Whyte Tech Inc. but also by the large number of people in the area.
Her entire existence has been confined to California.
Winnie had to make do with a secluded corner to regain her lost confidence, to avoid humiliation.
She feared looking like a child in front of the CEO.
She had travelled a great distance from California to allow the Job to fall from her hand in such a manner.
She ran into someone while attempting to rediscover her inner self-confidence.
She became so consumed by her anxieties that she failed to notice her movements.
Her files were already strewn across the floor at that point.
She hurriedly picked up her files and said she was sorry for hitting the woman.
“And who are you?”
After looking over Winnie's entire body as if she were leaking faeces, the woman said, “I am not sure if I have seen your face around here before.”
“My name is Winnie Williams.”
With a faltering voice, Winnie clarified, “I was supposed to resume this morning.”
As she gave the employment letter to the unfamiliar woman, her hands trembled.
“And why have you stayed here?
The CEO has been in his office waiting for you. Please accompany me.” After reviewing the employment letter, the woman took Winnie along.
Winnie was unsure of how to respond.
Everything was happening so quickly.
She seldom considered meeting with the CEO so quickly.
She was afraid of making a mistake in front of the CEO because she lacked confidence.
Winnie abruptly stopped the Lady as they approached the CEO's office. “Does the CEO seem nice? How would you describe his demeanour? Do you think he will like me?”
The Lady was asked a thousand questions, and she did not respond once.
“Really, are we going to discuss this? Just so you know, I was doing something important before you came across me.” She chastised Winnie for being overly timid.
“No, please do not leave.
I apologize. Let us go.” Winnie apologized for her actions as they walked into the CEO's office.
“Good morning, Boss.
Here's the woman you have been waiting for. I ran into her a few minutes ago.” She spoke with the CEO, who was facing the desk, concentrating on his laptop.
“That is fine, Clara.
You can leave now,” the CEO said, still facing the desk.
“So, what was your name, again?” The CEO eventually lifted his head to speak with Winnie.
He was taken aback when he recognized Winnie, but he pretended not to know her to maintain an appearance.
Winnie, like Daxton, recognized Daxton as her best friend who left town the same year her parents died.
She is now torn between keeping the job she took to move on from the past and returning to California to pick up the pieces she left behind.
