Chapter 1
Episode 1 – Shadows in the Hallway
The first day of a new semester was supposed to feel exciting. For Ethan Kim, however, it felt more like walking into a battlefield.
He adjusted his backpack and kept his eyes on the shiny floor as he stepped through the hallway of Westbridge High. Laughter, the squeak of sneakers, and the slamming of lockers filled the air. Groups of students clustered in their own circles, trading gossip, showing off new hairstyles, and sharing the glow of vacation tans.
Ethan didn’t belong in any of those circles. He was the type who blended in with the walls—quiet, unnoticed, almost invisible. And he preferred it that way. But fate had other plans.
Halfway down the hallway, a loud voice cut through the noise.
“Well, well, look who’s back. The little shadow himself.”
The mocking tone made Ethan freeze. He didn’t have to turn around to know who it was. The air seemed to thicken as footsteps approached from behind, slow and deliberate.
Damon Lee.
Tall, broad-shouldered, with eyes that held the same darkness as a storm cloud, Damon was the kind of guy everyone noticed—and everyone feared. He was the leader of the unspoken hierarchy in Westbridge High, the self-appointed king of intimidation. His friends, a rowdy pack of boys who trailed behind him like loyal hounds, laughed at his every word.
Ethan finally looked up. Damon stood directly in his path, casting a shadow that seemed to swallow the morning light.
“What’s in the bag, huh? Still carrying those boring sketchbooks?” Damon asked, smirking. He plucked Ethan’s backpack strap like it was a toy. “Or are you hiding love letters? Don’t tell me you’ve actually made friends over the summer.”
The hallway quieted, students glancing over with curiosity and fear. Nobody dared to step in. Everyone knew the rules—when Damon set his sights on someone, you stayed out of it.
“I’m just going to class,” Ethan murmured, trying to sidestep him.
But Damon blocked him again, shoving him lightly against the lockers. It wasn’t hard enough to hurt—yet. It was a warning, a reminder of who held the power here.
“Class?” Damon sneered. “Don’t pretend you belong here. Shadows like you don’t get to walk in the sunlight.”
His words were sharper than the shove. Ethan clenched his jaw, keeping his head down. The worst thing he could do was fight back. He’d learned that the hard way last year.
Just then, a voice sliced through the tension.
“Leave him alone, Damon.”
The sound was calm but firm, carrying a strength that silenced even the laughter of Damon’s gang.
Ethan’s eyes widened as Hana Park stepped forward.
She was new—transferred last semester, though she had already made a name for herself as someone who didn’t play by Damon’s rules. Her long dark hair framed her confident face, and there was fire in her gaze as she positioned herself between Damon and Ethan.
Damon raised an eyebrow, his smirk deepening. “And here comes the princess. Always saving the weak ones. Careful, Hana. Stick around shadows too long and you’ll disappear with them.”
Hana didn’t flinch. “Better a shadow than a bully with nothing better to do.”
The hallway buzzed at her boldness. Some students looked away nervously, while others stole glances of admiration. Nobody ever talked back to Damon—except Hana.
Damon’s smile faltered for a split second, though he quickly masked it with a laugh. He stepped closer, lowering his voice so only Hana and Ethan could hear.
“This isn’t over. Shadows can’t hide forever. I’ll be watching.”
He gave Ethan one last shove, lighter this time, then turned and walked away, his gang trailing after him. The atmosphere in the hallway slowly returned to normal, though a nervous tension still lingered.
Ethan finally let out the breath he’d been holding. His heart pounded against his ribs like a trapped bird.
“You okay?” Hana asked, her voice softer now.
Ethan nodded, though his throat felt dry. “Yeah. Thanks.”
She studied him for a moment, as if weighing whether he was telling the truth. Then she smiled faintly. “Don’t let him get to you. Bullies like Damon feed on fear. If you give them nothing, they lose power.”
Ethan wished it were that simple. To him, Damon wasn’t just a bully—he was a shadow that haunted every corner of the school, a presence too heavy to ignore.
As Ethan walked toward his first class, Hana beside him, he couldn’t shake Damon’s words from his head. Shadows like you don’t get to walk in the sunlight.
The phrase stuck, echoing in his thoughts like a curse. And deep down, Ethan feared it was true.
But what neither he nor Hana realized was that the first encounter of the semester was only the beginning. Damon’s shadow was darker than either of them imagined, and it was about to spread far beyond the hallway.
The game of predator and prey had begun, and Ethan was caught in its center.
