The Contract
"Father, you know I can't do this. I have my own dreams and aspirations, and they don't include marrying a man I don't know or love. I'm not some object you could trade away, like a piece of property".
" This isn't a request, Alice. It's an order. You would do this, for the sake of our family's future." Her father had just stared at her, cold and impassive.
Alice's voice was shaking, and her eyes were filled with tears.
Alice's father sat across from her at the dining table, his face expressionless and unreadable. He wore a dark suit, with a crisp white shirt and a red tie.
His hands were folded neatly in front of him, and he watched her carefully, waiting for her response. Alice's own hands trembled, and her breathing was shallow and uneven. Her eyes were red, and her cheeks were stained with tears.
Alice took a deep breath, trying to compose herself. She looked her father in the eye, and said "I understand that you want what's best for our family, but I can't marry someone I don't know, just to save our company. It's not fair to me, or to the man you want me to marry. He deserves to be loved, not used as a pawn in your business dealings."
Her father looked at her, stony-faced. There was no hint of emotion on his face. "You don't understand the stakes here, Alice", her father said, his voice firm and unwavering.
"This isn't just about our company. It's about our family's legacy. If we lose our company, we lose everything we've worked for. I won't let that happen. I've made up my mind, and I expect you to do your part."
Alice felt like she was drowning, as her father's words washed over her. She felt like she was being pulled under, and there was no way to break the surface.
"But father, I can't marry someone I don't love," Alice pleaded, her voice cracking. "Please, can't we find another way to save the company? There must be something else we can do."
Her father just shook his head, his expression unchanged. "I'm sorry, but this is the only way. It's already been decided. I won't hear any more about it."
Alice felt like the air had been sucked out of the room. Her head was spinning, and she felt like she was going to faint.
As Alice struggled to catch her breath, her father stood up from the table, and said, "I have to go now. I'm sorry, but there's nothing more to discuss." He turned and started walking towards the door, without looking back at her.
Alice felt like her world was crumbling around her. She didn't know what to do, or how to make her father understand. She was trapped, with no way out.
She sat at the table, tears streaming down her face, she felt completely alone. She was lost, and she didn't know what to do next. The only thing she knew for sure was that her life would never be the same again.
It was a very busy day at the office for Bryan. He had a million things to do, and he was juggling multiple projects at once. He was used to working long hours, and he was known for being a hard worker. Work was his life, and he was proud of the success he had achieved.
Bryan was twenty-two, muscular built and had soft, curly hair. His dark blue eyes were a point of attraction for people.
Being a cold and ruthless billionaire, no one could talk to him, except his assistant. Strictly business minded, he worked extra hours to get what he wanted.
John walked into the office with an envelope in his hand.
" It's a contract request from Ethan Corporations", John dropped the envelope on the brown mahogany table.
" What does it say?", Bryan asked, his gaze fixed on the desktop.
" His company is experiencing critical setbacks, and he needs your assistance".
Bryan looked up at him.
" My assistance?"
" Yes, he wants to give his eighteen year old daughter in exchange".
" I'll take a look at it".
John placed the envelope on the table and stood by the corner.
Bryan picked it up. It had the company's name written on the outside of the envelope.
Inside the envelope was the hard copy of the contract, and some documents to be signed, then some pictures of Alice. He went through them carefully, reading through the pages of the documents.
He thought for a while, and signed his name on the contract.
" Here", he handed the envelope to John. " Inform him through an email that the contract has been signed".
" Alright Sir ". John left the office with the envelope.
" The contract has been signed. I'll meet with him to fix a day for a little court marriage ", Alice's father said to her emotionlessly.
" Father please ", tears streamed down her cheeks." I don't know him, and I can't get married to him".
Her father looked at her straight in the face.
" I'm your father, you have no right to make decisions for me".
" It involves me, father. He doesn't even know I exist. He's a cold person without feelings for anyone ", she cried.
" Alice, this is a one-time opportunity, working with one of the biggest companies in the states. I can't afford to let it pass me by. Eat well, I need you to be healthy. You'll soon be the wife of a powerful billionaire". He stormed out of the sitting room.
