Chapter 1 Dannya Menchaca.
This story is copyrighted under number 2103227260313 This novel is now available in physical format on sss, it's the original story ♥ And if you'd like to know a little more about Cameron and Loren, I recommend "An Unexpected Coincidence" and then "What If We Make It Real?" Thank you, I hope you enjoy it ❤️ I'm arriving from my last flight. I've been away from home for two weeks, and I'm eager to surprise Barnett. Today is our wedding anniversary. We've been married for 8 years. I can't deny that it was difficult at first because he was studying to finish his degree, he quit his job, and I was taking care of all the expenses with my flight attendant salary, so sometimes we were a bit tight on the budget. Now he's finally a lawyer and a very well-known one. He works at a famous law firm here in Colorado. We got married when I was 20, and he was 25. I still remember meeting him as if it were yesterday. I was with my best friend Gina and her boyfriend Julian at a party. When Barnett arrived, I couldn't hide how much I liked him. He looked so handsome, with his very athletic body from always playing sports, his black hair and that penetrating gaze drove me crazy. Plus, being a bit older than me, he seemed like a mature man to me. He turned out to be Julian's older brother, so it was the first time I had seen him. After that day, we dated for a year when he proposed marriage. My mother initially didn't want to accept it. She said there's something about Barnett she doesn't like, and maybe it's because he's somewhat possessive and at one point he mistreated me in front of my mother out of jealousy. Afterward, he asked for forgiveness and was very sorry. I can't deny he has quite a temper. He wants to have children and, although we've tried, it hasn't worked out. Barnett says it's my fault because I'm overweight, plus lately he doesn't even touch me. My coworkers can't stand him. They say he's crazy, that I have a very well-proportioned body, although I don't exercise much because my job is a bit difficult, but I don't feel bad about it; I'm comfortable with my body and appearance. I have black, curly hair, white skin, my eyes are almost black, and I'm tall. Since I finally have a week off before going on another trip, I'll take the opportunity to prepare a surprise for Barnett, as he doesn't know I'm arriving today. I go directly to the meeting room to review my next flight schedule for the following week. I'm deeply engrossed when our boss, Mrs. Weston arrives. "Good morning ladies and gentlemen, I know you're eager to go home, but I need to inform you of something before you leave, as you know our flight captain is retiring this month and I want you to know that we already have his replacement. I'd like you to meet him as he'll be joining your team." Just then, the door to the meeting room opens, and a striking man enters in his pilot's uniform. He's tall, with brown hair, blue eyes, and a beard that makes him look quite sexy. He comes in smiling, revealing his perfect white teeth. "Please, I don't think I'll ever ask for time off again from now on. The flights will be very entertaining," my colleague Ana says quietly, so only we can hear her. Although I don't want to admit it, he is very handsome and his uniform fits him quite snugly, showing off his good physique. To my taste, he seems a bit full of himself. I think he knows perfectly well the effect he has on women. Luckily, I'm immune to any charms other than Barnett's. He stands in front of us. "Good morning, I'm delighted to meet you all. My name is Cameron Parker, and it will be my pleasure to work with you and be part of this great team." He smiles at us and all my female colleagues sigh. Please, he's just a man. He starts greeting our team one by one, and I remain seated looking at my phone when he approaches me. "Hello, I think you're the only one left to introduce yourself." I don't want to be rude since we'll be spending a lot of time together, so reluctantly, I stand up and shake his hand. "Nice to meet you Cameron, I'm Loren Hank. Welcome to our team." When he shakes my hand, I feel as if a jolt of electricity passes through me at that moment. He looks at our joined hands and smiles. "Pleased to meet you, Loren." I quickly withdraw my hand and still feel an odd tingling sensation. I just hope he doesn't have some contagious disease. I say goodbye to everyone and leave in a hurry. I always keep my car at the airport to avoid delays when I have to travel. As I get in, my new colleague comes to mind. I imagine he's about Barnett's age. But why am I thinking about him? What do I care how old he is? I chide myself for being so curious. I arrive at my apartment and Barnett isn't there. He probably went to the office early. We live in an upscale area of Colorado. Although I earn a lot, I couldn't afford an apartment like this. Barnett bought it when he started working at a well-known law firm. According to him, we had to keep up appearances. I enter the bedroom to leave my suitcase, and I'm surprised because everything is very tidy. We have a lady who comes and helps us, but she doesn't come today and Barnett is very messy, so I find the orderliness strange. I've been planning this day for a long time, so in one of the cities we visited, I bought a very seductive black nightgown to surprise Barnett tonight, and I bought him a watch from a rather expensive brand that he loves. I start organizing the clothes in my suitcase, and when I see it's almost time for Barnett to arrive, I take a shower and put on my negligee. I just hope Barnett likes it. We haven't made love in so long that I don't know how to seduce him anymore. I arrange my curls and when I look in the mirror, I'm happy with the result. I prepare a bottle of wine, a very exclusive one, because that's the only kind Barnett likes. To think that before, we used to drink any wine we had without complaining. When everything is ready, I sit in the living room to wait for him. I don't know why, but I feel very nervous. After a few minutes, the door opens, and I hear voices and laughter, so I imagine Barnett is coming with someone. I immediately hide behind the couch so whoever is with him doesn't see me in my negligee. To my surprise, he enters with a blonde girl hanging from his neck, kissing her. I feel like my soul has left my body at that moment, as if my heart is breaking into a thousand pieces. I don't know how to react. I want to confront him, but I don't dare. The girl looks like a magazine model, very thin, and I look at my negligee and feel foolish. They go into our bedroom while I'm dying inside. I feel such a strong pressure in my chest that it's hard to breathe. I try to calm myself down and go to the laundry room, grab a change of clothes I have there, prepare my phone, and enter the bedroom just as they're having s*x. I take several photos as they look at me in surprise. I grab my suitcase and quickly pack some of my most essential things. I'm closing the suitcase when Barnett gets up n***d and approaches me. "Loren, I can explain." I ignore him and leave the room with my suitcase. When I'm about to open the door, Barnett stops me. "Loren, delete the photos you took or else..." "Or else what?" He grabs my arm and throws me forcefully onto the couch. "I'm a lawyer and I know exactly what you intend to do with them, but please Loren, don't you realize you're a fat woman? You haven't even been able to give me children. You have to understand that it's normal for me to seek other ways to get pleasure. You're frigid when it comes to s*x, you bore me." I stand up and slap him. He reacts and slaps me back, making me fall to the floor. When he sees what he's just done, he tries to approach me. I get up and storm out of the apartment. I can't believe this is happening to me. I feel so awful. I don't want to go to my mother's house because I know she'll ask me thousands of questions, and even less to Gina's house, because she'll tell Julian and I don't want to cause problems between the brothers. They already don't have a very good relationship as it is. On one occasion, they came to blows because Julian tried to defend me. Although Barnett had never hit me before, he always takes any opportunity to make fun of me with our friends, which is why Gina and Julian prefer not to visit us. I go to see them occasionally to see their little ones - they have two children, Julian, who is 5 years old, and Julio, who is 2 years old. They're precious, and I adore them, plus they're my godchildren. No matter how much I keep racking my brain, I don't know where to go. The only thing I can think of is to return to work to see if there's any vacancy they can fit me into - it will serve as a distraction. Upon arriving at the airport, I leave my suitcase in the car and go to the meeting room. As luck would have it, I run into my presumptuous new colleague. "Hi Cameron, do you know if the boss is around here?" He looks at me from head to toe, surprised. I'm about to say something when I look at myself and realize the reason for his expression. In my rush, I put on Barnett's flip-flops, which are huge on me, and to top it off, I chose the worst clothes I have that I use for cleaning the house, not to mention the bruise on my face and my swollen eyes. He must think I just came out of a horror movie. He stands up and approaches me quickly. "Loren, are you okay? Were you mugged or what happened to you?" I don't know why, but his question makes me burst into laughter, and he's completely bewildered looking at me. I try to calm down, but I can't. My raucous laughter fills the entire meeting room. Thankfully, we're alone. "Yes, I was mugged." Very concerned, he takes out his phone. "Let me call the police right away." I calm down a bit and take the phone from him. "No, it's not necessary. What they stole from me had no real value." And like a complete basketcase, I start crying. The poor guy looks so confused, I don't even want to imagine what he's thinking of me. To my surprise, he comes closer and gives me a hug that incredibly comforts me. He wears a very masculine perfume that makes me sigh. Barnett used an expensive one, but it made me nauseous. When I'm calmer, he accompanies me to sit down and brings me a cup of coffee. "Loren, I don't know what happened to you, but I hope this can help you a little." "Cameron, I'm sorry, how embarrassing for you. You must think I'm a hysterical lunatic." "Well, to be honest, I thought you were a zombie, and you were going to attack me at any moment." I burst out laughing. "I'm sorry, I've had the worst night of my entire life. I fled from my house, and I'd rather not talk about it." He looks at me understandingly. "Don't worry, if you don't want to talk about it, you don't have to, but you need to calm down. By the way, your sandals are from a very exclusive brand, but I think they're a bit big for you." I burst out laughing again. "They belonged to my soon-to-be ex-husband." "Are you divorced?" "Not yet, but I hope to be very soon. And what are you doing here?" "I have a flight in the early morning, but it seems there's not enough staff and our boss is looking for someone to join us." "That's exactly why I came." "But you just got back from a trip that lasted several weeks." "I know, but I'm going through a rough patch and I prefer to work." "Then it's settled, you're coming with us." "But what if the boss doesn't agree?" "Of course she'll agree, you'll see." "Well, I'm going to get my suitcase to make myself look a bit more decent. I don't want to go around scaring everyone." "Oh, I don't think that could happen. Even with your soon-to-be ex-husband's sandals and dressed like a zombie, you look sexy to me." His comment makes me blush, and I hurry out of the meeting room while he stays behind, smiling. After taking a shower and putting on my uniform, I feel a little better. It's strange, but I thought what just happened to me would hurt more. I can't deny that I feel sadness, but I'm angrier at myself for having allowed so many years of humiliation. It's been a long time since I felt comfortable with Barnett. Every time he had a business dinner, he would pick out my clothes, dictate how I should behave, we'd arrive at the meeting, and he'd leave me alone. The good thing was that Julian is also a lawyer and I would always bump into him and Gina at the meetings. They were my salvation. As for s*x, I'm at a loss for words. At first, he was a very passionate man, but little by little he lost interest in me. He always repeated that I was overweight and that it was hard for any man to find me desirable. I truly don't understand how I could endure so many humiliations. I don't think it was love. Maybe with all the things he said to me, I began to feel worthless, or who knows, I also felt a bit afraid to face a divorce. But from now on, I will never allow anyone to treat me that way again. From today on, my life will change completely. In a more positive mood, I call Julian. "Hello, sister-in-law, how are you?" "Hi Julian, I need your services as a lawyer." "Of course, tell me, what's going on?" "I want to divorce Barnett." Julian stays silent for a few minutes. "I'm at a loss for words. Can I know the reason?" "I'll send you some photos by email. I don't want you to use them unless it's absolutely necessary, but please, I need this to be finalized as soon as possible." "Alright, I'll submit the divorce papers this week. Are you here in Colorado?" "Yes, but I'm leaving again tonight." "Loren, I don't want to sound harsh, but it's the best thing you can do. My brother has never been good to you. I have to admit that meeting him was the worst thing that could have happened to you." "I know. Thank you, Julian, for everything." "I'll call you as soon as I have news. Safe travel." "Thanks, give my love to my godchildren and Gina." I return to the meeting room and my boss is drinking coffee. "Hi Loren, Cameron just told me you can join us on tonight's flight." "Yes, that's right." "Are you sure? You were very excited about your return." "Yes, I'm sure." The flight time arrives and I feel calmer. We have a busy night as we go from one flight to another, and our itinerary finally late. My colleagues Ana and Monce leave with the flight attendant, Cris to the hotel the airline reserved for us. I stay a while longer tidying up a few things on the plane when Cameron comes out and is surprised to see me. "What's up Loren, don't you want to go rest? We've had a very busy night." "Yes, I'll go to the hotel in a bit. The truth is I don't want to shut myself away and start thinking." He smiles at me. "Come on, I'll take you out for dinner, and then we'll go get a rest. I'm starving and when that happens I start yelling at everyone." I smile. "I don't know if it's a good idea." "Loren, it's just dinner. Aren't you hungry?" "Alright, let's go. I can't let other people put up with your bad mood." We go in a taxi with our small suitcases and our uniforms, of course. We arrive at a very elegant restaurant and I feel a bit uncomfortable. "I'm sorry Cameron, I thought we were going somewhere casual." "Come on Loren, don't worry about what others think. This restaurant is one of my favorites. Let's enjoy the food and don't think about anything." He offers his hand for me to take, and although I feel a bit uncomfortable because I'm coming to such an elegant restaurant in my uniform, I take his hand and we enter. There's a host checking reservations. "I think we'll have to find somewhere else to eat. They only accept reservations here." He turns to look at me and smiles, lets go of my hand and approaches the host. I can't hear what he tells her, but she smiles very happily and leads us to a table far from the others. We sit down, and they immediately bring us the menu. "And what's the secret?" "The secret for what?" "Come on Cameron, there's a long line to get in, and you just talk to the girl at the entrance, give her a few smiles, and immediately we're shown to this table." "No secret, the owner is my friend, that's all. He's hired me to fly his jet occasionally." "Ah, so you used your connections." He smiles at me. I don't know why, but every time I see him smile like that, I feel a tingling throughout my body. Maybe my separation from Barnett is affecting my senses. "Would you like me to recommend a dish?" "Surprise me." He places the order and asks for a beer for himself. "And you, Loren, what would you like to drink?" Wow, this is indeed strange. For a moment, I thought he would order for me. "A beer too." The waiter takes the order and leaves. "I like this place, it's very nice, and to be honest, I really like this secluded table. I don't like being surrounded by people when I eat alone." "And why is that?" They bring us the beers and he takes a sip. "Barnett used to say that I eat too much. That's why he didn't like taking me out to eat in public." He chokes on his beer and almost spits it on me. "I'm sorry Loren, but who is Barnett and how dare he make such an unpleasant comment?" "He's my husband, hopefully soon to be my ex." They arrive with our dish and as I taste it, I sigh. "My God Cameron, this meat is delicious." "I told you." We really enjoyed the dinner. Cameron has a great sense of humor and I, who at one point, thought he was arrogant. Well, the truth is, he's not. On the contrary, he's a very simple guy. We're in the taxi when my cell phone rings. "Loren, how could you file for divorce? Don't you realize that can damage my career? At the law firm where I'm a partner, divorces are not allowed. I always knew you were stupid, but I didn't imagine how much." "You should have thought about that before cheating on me in my own house." "I'm warning you once and for all, either you cancel that stupid idea of divorce or I'm capable of..." "Of what, Barnett? Hitting me again?" "You provoked me, it was your fault I hit you." "You know what, deal with Julian. I don't want you to call me again." "Don't even think for a second that you're going to keep what's mine. Everything we have is thanks to my work. With your salary, we could never afford the life we have." "Yes, you're right, but thanks to my work you finished your degree without having to work and study as I did." "Don't give me that crap. With or without your help, I would have finished my degree." "You know what, Barnett, I'm not in the mood. So sign the divorce papers and keep everything. I don't care. All I want is to never hear from you again." "I don't see that happening, Loren, because I'm never going to sign those divorce papers. Do you understand?" I hang up the phone, and although I don't want to cry, I can't stop my tears. Cameron takes my hand. "I'm sorry, I couldn't help overhearing. If you're struggling with a divorce, I know an excellent law firm that could help you." "Thank you, Cameron, but my brother-in-law is handling the paperwork." "But if it's his brother, won't he be at his side?" "I don't think so. Julian and he have never gotten along." "Well, if you change your mind, don't hesitate to ask me." We arrive at the hotel quite late, and the receptionist tells me that there's no room reserved for me and that the hotel is full. I'm trying to call my boss but can't reach her. That's when Cameron comes down and finds me sitting in the reception area. "What are you doing here? I thought you'd be resting." "I'm waiting for my colleagues to see if I can stay with them. There's no reservations for me." "I can't believe it. Why don't you just get another room and have the airline pay for it?" "Because the receptionist says there are no rooms available." "Look for another hotel. You can't stay here waiting for your colleagues." "I know, you're right." I'm leaving the hotel when he stops me. "Wait a moment, I'll talk to the receptionist." He walks away and starts talking to the receptionist, who can't stop smiling at him. There's no doubt this man uses his charm to get what he wants. My gaze drops to his pants and I sigh, he certainly has his charms. He returns and hands me my room key. "There, we got a room." "How did you do it? She assured me they didn't have any available." "Well, actually there are no rooms of the type they reserve for us, but I got you another one." "It's a presidential suite. Are you out of your mind? What if the airline gets angry?" "They shouldn't, since it was their mistake. So go rest and enjoy the presidential suite for tonight." I approach him and give a kiss on the cheek. "Thank you, I owe you a big lot." He smiles, showing me his perfect teeth, and bites his lip. "Well, I hope to cash in on that someday." I go smiling to my room and, indeed, it is an absolutely gorgeous suite, with a wonderful view, a king-size bed, and, of course, a beautiful bathroom where I intend to unwind. I'm taking a bath in the huge tub, completely relaxed, while my cell phone won't stop ringing. Barnett sends me messages in which he insults me and then asks for forgiveness, so typical of him. He expects me to forgive him like I always have, but this time it's different. Once I'm back in Colorado, I'll look for a smaller apartment to start my fresh new life.
