Chapter 1:The Wolf In My Dreams
Jennifer’s POV.
My bare feet slap against the cold earth, branches whipping at my face. Behind me, I can hear the rogue wolves; their snarls echo through the trees like thunder.
They’re faster than me. I know I’m not going to make it.
A sharp pain exploded in my shoulder as claws raked across my skin. I stumbled, crashing to the ground. The red, gleaming eyes of the rogues surrounded me in the darkness.
Suddenly, a deep and powerful howl shook the ground beneath me. The rogues freeze, their ears flattening against their skulls.
Through the trees, a wolf emerged. He was enormous—three times the size of any werewolf I had ever seen. His fur was black as the night sky, and his eyes…his eyes were the color of onyx.
The rogues scattered into the trees, but he didn’t chase them. Instead, he walked toward me, his massive paws coming down silently on the ground.
My breath caught in my chest.
There was only one wolf that big… only one wolf with such an aura… and every werewolf knew who he was.
The new Alpha of the Hessen Pack.
He lowered his massive head and touched his nose gently to my forehead. A soft rumble came from his chest—not a growl, but something like a purr.
And from every corner of the forest, other wolves answered. Their howls rose together, and even though I was injured, even though I was bleeding on the forest floor, I felt my blood surge with the primal urge to follow him.
To fight beside him and be part of something so…
The sudden, loud sound of my phone ringing cut through the dream like a blade, jerking me awake. I fumbled blindly across the nightstand, knocking over a glass of water in the process.
I curse under my breath, my fingers finally finding the smooth surface of my phone. I've been blind for six months now, but sometimes I forget. Sometimes I still reached for things as if I could still see them.
My fingers finally found the smooth surface of my phone.
“Hello?” I answered with a drowsy voice, pressing the phone to my ear.
“Jennifer! Thank the goddess I reached you.” A male voice called out from the other end.
I recognized my uncle’s voice immediately. I sit up slowly, my free hand instinctively moving to rest on my bulging stomach.
“What’s wrong, Uncle?"
“Nothing’s wrong! Quite the opposite, actually.” I can hear the excitement in his voice. “I have wonderful news. But first, how are you feeling? How’s the pregnancy?”
I smiled softly. “I’m fine. The morning sickness is getting better. The healer said everything looks good.”
“And the eyes? Any progress?”
I shook my head even though I knew he couldn’t see me. “No. The damage from the attack was too severe. But the healers are certain it won’t affect the baby. My blindness isn’t genetic.”
“That’s good. That’s very good.” He paused, and I could hear him take a deep breath. “Jennifer, I have news about the Hessen Pack.”
My heart skipped a beat. The Hessen Pack, whose Alpha had just appeared in my dream. The same Alpha Frank who has been in a coma for the past nine months.
I still remembered the day of the rogue's attack vividly. The rogues swarmed our borders; the chaos and the blood were unlike anything I’d ever experienced. And I remembered hearing about how Alpha Frank had sustained a severe injury that left him in a vegetative state.
Everyone said he might never wake up.
It was barely a week after the attack when I discovered that I was pregnant.
“The Council has finally given up,” he continued. “After nine months with no improvement, they’ve decided to move forward. They’re going to nominate George as the new Alpha.”
I felt my heart leap.
A part of me felt sorry for Alpha Frank. I never knew him personally, but everyone heard stories about how ruthless, brilliant, and powerful he was. He didn’t deserve to end up like this.
Still, the other part of me—the selfish part—felt a spark of hope. My George. My husband. If he becomes Alpha, that means everything changes.
“The vote is scheduled for next week. If it passes, George becomes Alpha, and that child you’re carrying…” he paused dramatically. “That child will one day be the Alpha of Hessen Pack.”
I pressed my hand more firmly against my stomach.
“That’s wonderful. George would be so happy to hear this.”
“Speaking of George, I’ve been trying to reach him for hours.” He added, frustration creeping into his tone. “Can you tell him? He needs to know right away. The nomination could come through any minute now.”
“Of course, I’ll tell him right away.”
I ended the call and swung my legs out of bed. My feet found the floor, and I stood up carefully with my hands outstretched. The route to the study was familiar now. I’d walked it a hundred times.
Left at the bedroom door. Right down the hallway. Third door on the left.
I made my way slowly, my fingers trailing along the wall. I was so happy for George. He’d always wanted more. He’d always felt like he was living in Frank’s shadow, and now… now he was going to be the Alpha.
As soon as I stepped in front of the third door, I raised my hand to knock and froze, my hand hovering mid-air.
A soft sound that sounded like a moan filled my ears.
“Faster, yes, George… faster…” a woman’s voice whispered, and my blood turned to ice.
That voice. I knew that voice. I’d known it my entire life.
It was my sister.
Shirley.
“Shh,” came George’s breathless voice. “We have to be quiet. Jennifer is asleep right down this hallway.”
“Who cares about Jennifer?” Shirley scoffed. “What can a blind, pathetic nobody like her do?”
A painful lump appeared in my throat, making it almost impossible to swallow. My chest tightened, and my breathing seized.
I staggered backward as hot tears welled up in my eyes.
No! There was no way my sister and husband would…
It can’t be!
“We still have to be careful, Shirley,” George said in a low voice. “Our goal is within our reach already. Once I become the Alpha, nothing else matters.”
“Nothing except your pathetic little wife.” She hissed in a venomous tone.
“You know I don’t love her. You know it was only to get close to Frank’s territory.”
“And her eyes?” Shirley asked. “Was that a part of your plan too?”
My breath hitched.
My eyes?
“My plan?” George laughed. “That was all you, sweetheart. You suggested it.”
“And wasn’t it a brilliant idea?” Shirley added proudly. “If I hadn’t asked you to take her corneas while she was asleep, I’d probably be the blind one. Now, while she stumbles around in the dark like a blind little mouse, I’ll take back everything that should have been mine.”
I swayed on my feet, reaching out blindly for something to hold onto. My fingers found the doorframe.
“What’s done is done,” George added. “Besides, she doesn’t need her eyes. She’s going to give me an heir. That’s all that matters.”
“An heir," Shirley spat. “I should be the one carrying your child, George. Not that useless thing.”
“It doesn’t matter. Once Jennifer gives birth, we’ll give rid of her and you’ll raise the child.”
At that point, every inch of me was trembling. The tears spilled down my cheeks, my throat burned, and no matter how hard I tried to move, I couldn’t bring myself to take a single step.
My husband. My sister. The two people I trusted most in the world had betrayed me.
