17.Burns returned from the bathroom dressed in the military fatigues and white shirt. He looked neat and his face was brighter. He had his old clothes plus the towel and rag he’d used folded in his arms. He sat them down against the wall next to the bathroom then settled on the couch next to Madeline. I was reclined in the chair with my head tilted slightly backward. Burns spoke to Madeline, and she unwrapped herself from the blanket then walked to the restroom. Hicks entered the room with two boxes and a roll of paper towels in hand. “I have the pizza,” he said. “There’s sausage and pepperoni.” He placed the pizza and the roll of paper towels on the dining table.
