Chapter One: Leaving the Hospital
In S City, on the outskirts, lies the Fourth People's Hospital.
The tall walls encase the extensive grounds of the hospital within a fortress of steel and concrete. Those outside can enter, but those inside cannot easily escape.
Patients admitted here have a grim fate; very few are ever discharged. Most spend their lives within these walls, only to be carried out upon their death.
Why? Because this is a mental health asylum. The surrounding walls are higher than those of prisons, and the security measures to prevent escape are as stringent as those in a maximum-security facility.
Any mental health patient sent here has no chance of escape unless a family member comes forward to take them home.
This unique institution has existed in S City for many years, with countless patients being admitted and later removed. To enter and exit is often a matter of a lifetime.
An Zhisu had spent five years here, and scenes like these had become numbing to her. Yet she always knew she would leave someday; it was just a matter of when.
Perhaps favored by fate, An Zhisu had complied with the hospital's regimen for five years—never crying or causing trouble, cooperating with injections and medications. Finally, today she was told she was cured and could leave.
On a winter afternoon, under the gentle warmth of the sun, golden rays bathed An Zhisu's slender figure as she stood before the heavy iron gates of the hospital, waiting for the gate that had confined her freedom for five years to slowly open.
Clang… Clang…
The gate's rollers screeched against the ground, producing a jarring sound like a summer thunderstorm, shattering the afternoon’s tranquility.
A pair of canvas-shoed feet stepped out from behind the gate. Looking up from the delicate ankles, long legs were wrapped in a pair of faded jeans.
The jeans were somewhat outdated, with vibrant embroidery running from the knee to the pocket. The exquisite handwork was probably the most valuable aspect of these jeans.
Further up, An Zhisu's fragile waist was covered by a simple white sweater, as pure as her face, lacking any color.
The biting northern wind pierced her weakened body, and her hair blew wildly in the wind. Her delicate features were hidden among the strands, her pale face still reflecting a sickly, indifferent beauty.
Beep beep!
Outside the hospital gates, just ten meters away from An Zhisu, a white car was parked. The owner leaned against the car door, seeming impatient, and honked the horn twice.
An Zhisu walked towards the car with a slightly brisk pace, stepping over the short distance quickly. She extended her arms and gave the person a hearty hug.
"Jiaren, I’m finally out."
Song Jiaran raised her eyebrows in displeasure and tugged at the back of An Zhisu’s collar, creating some distance: "Don’t talk to me with the tone of someone just released from prison, it's annoying."
An Zhisu obediently nodded and bowed: "Yes, my great lawyer, thank you for taking the time to pick me up. I’m eternally grateful and can only repay you in the next life."
Song Jiaran seemed pleased with this and made a gesture: "Get in the car. At least you haven’t been infected by the madness here and can still recognize your benefactor."
An Zhisu complied and got into the car. Just as she fastened her seatbelt, Song Jiaran, who had already started the car, tossed a yellow file folder at her.
"Your phone, wallet, passport, ID, and driver’s license are all sorted out." As a lawyer, Song Jiaran was always efficient. She had taken care of these documents before An Zhisu’s release.
"Did you bring the jade pendant I asked for?" An Zhisu opened the file folder, immediately searching for the most important item to her.
"The jade pendant isn’t in there. It’s in the drawer in front of you," Song Jiaran said, pointing to the car’s drawer.
An Zhisu nodded and opened the drawer. Inside was a brocade box, which she opened to find a round jade pendant. It was a simple jade ring, seemingly not valuable, but it was the most precious thing to An Zhisu now.
Holding the pendant tightly in her palm, she gazed out at the passing scenery. After a long pause, as if making a final decision, she spoke with a voice that seemed to come from afar: "Jiaren, take me to Shengshi Corporation."
