Prologue
December 2021,
Daniella’s POV
I looked out of the window and envisioned a world with me happy in it. After all I have been through since I was a young little girl, who would have thought I would make a wonderful bride? No one! Because I have no family left.
I think I am a terrible person, getting married to the grandson of my father’s suspected murderer. I try to think about what daddy would think of me if he were here. Maybe he will give that disapproving look that gives me shivers in my spine. I guess he would say, “Daniella, I taught you to be a person of dignity, a woman of honor. "You are better than this, you are way better than this!” He would yell and give that disappointed and disapproving look.
Tracking down my father’s murderer was my main goal for four years. The storm of revenge raged inside me for four years until I met him.
Jose Martinez was the fire that lit up my dark world. Never have I met anyone like him. He brought smiles onto my face and my revenge melted from a dark filthy puddle of hatred into a soft warm cushion of love.
I know the meaning of love thanks to Jose, even though I know his hands are not clean. He is a mafia boss and, as a police officer, I should know better, but he has ensnared me in his web of love, and I am sure he is the one for me.
“Ma’am! Ma’am!” a loud voice yelled at me, making me snap out of my deep thoughts. I turned my head sharply, my head racing as the loud noise scared me. The room was filled with the anxious faces of my fiancé’s bodyguard, Felix and Pedro.
“Ma’am, we need to get moving, we are running late to the ceremony venue.” Felix softly spoke after seeing that I was startled by their voices.
I took a deep breath, smiling softly as I composed myself. “You shouldn’t have yelled like that, Felix” I said as I turned to the mirror to see my beautiful reflection before leaving the room.
“Ehmm, I am sorry ma, I…”
“We are sorry, ma. "We will wait outside.” Pedro interrupted Felix before he could continue his statement.
I nodded my head at them, barely making a sound as a sign of approval. They nodded their heads in response and left the room.
I looked into the mirror again, reminiscing on how I used to feel lonely and how everything would change today. I had no friends, and I was fine with it. I was the only child before my dad died, and I’m now an orphan.
“Daniella, your world is finally becoming complete” I said to myself as I blushed hard at my reflection.
I took one last glance at my reflection, pretty sure I had buried my memories in the room. I stepped out of the room in all confidence that I was taking a new leap. Taking a final glance at the whole room, I walked out of the room and closed the door behind me.
*
I stepped into my new car, which was a gift from my love, Jose, feeling giddy in my inside. I wasn’t bothered by the questions and odd faces of his bodyguards and driver. All that mattered was I finally had a place to call home.
As we drove to St Michael’s Catholic Church, close to the Martinez mansion, where we would be joined in holy matrimony. Felix’s body language suddenly changed, his brows creased deeply, and his eyes were glaring with concern. He leaned towards the side mirror, trying to scan the cars on the road behind us.
“Ma’am, I think a car is tracking us,” he said, with a tingle of concern in his voice.
I looked over my shoulder at the rear window, but the car in question was far behind us, and it didn’t look like we were being tailed.
“Are you sure we are being followed?” I asked, trying to calm the anxious feeling in my stomach.
“I am very sure ma’am." It’s been following us for the last few miles.” he answered, his eyes still fixed on the side mirror.
“I am going to try and lose them,” Pedro added sharply.
Before I could respond, Pedro made a sharp turn to the left side of the express road that made my breakfast rise up to my throat as I felt instantly nauseated.
“What is wrong….!!.”
Suddenly, the car in question accelerated to the side of my vehicle at a very high speed and collided into the side of our car before I could complete my statement.
Before Pedro could avoid another collision, the car raced with more speed and crashed into our car the second time. The loud sound of screeching tires filled the air as the car spun out of control.
The force of the crash threw me against the car window as the glass shattered on my head and I screamed as loudly as I could, and for a moment all I could see was blood and broken glass everywhere.
“Fe… Felix… help me.” I tried to whisper with the last ounce of strength in me. Everything seemed blurry and fuzzy. I tried to make words with my mouth, but I couldn’t.
Fliex noticed I was trying to speak. He was weak and was covered in a pool of blood which I was sure wasn't his. I looked to the side, seeing Pedro's lifeless body laying on the ground in his pool of blood.
“Ma’am.. "Ma'am, stay with me.” He pleaded as he struggled to get up. Before he could walk close to me, a deafening gunshot sound filled the air.
I watched in horror as a bullet hole pierced through Felix's head and his huge body hit the ground in a loud thud.
Panic surged through me as I tried to release muffled screams, but I couldn’t because I was too weak.
Then he walked towards me, wearing a black hoodie and a black mask, but I could see his deep green eyes that reeked of evil and hatred.
He pointed his gun at my face and I smelt death lurking in my face. I thought to myself, “Is this the price I pay for betraying daddy?”
“Please.. "Don’t!” I begged with tears streaming down my eyes.
Another deafening gunshot sound filled the air as I felt the most intense pain I have ever experienced in my whole life. I looked down at my chest to see a horrible wound, blood staining my wedding dress.
I panicked as the pain intensified, tears streaming down my face as I faded away from this world when I was just starting my new life.
I pictured Jose lastly as the world began to turn dark and a sense of calmness washed over me. My breathing slowed down as I closed my eyes and everything around me turned pitch black.
