CHAPTER 4/ SUSPICION AND SECRETS

882 Words
Ava trudged out of the classroom, her backpack slung over her shoulder. The bell had finally rang, freeing her from the monotony of Mr. Johnson's history lecture. She hadn't absorbed a single word, her mind consumed by thoughts of Ethan. It had been months since the accident, but the pain still lingered. As she walked down the hallway, lost in thought, she didn't notice the woman approaching her until she heard her name. "Ava?" She turned to see a woman in a crisp business suit, with a badge clipped to her belt. "Yes?" Ava replied, her curiosity piqued. The woman flashed her badge. "Detective James. I need to ask you some questions." Ava's heart skipped a beat. What could the detective want with her? "Okay..." Ava said hesitantly, her mind racing with possibilities. Detective James nodded. "Let's find a quiet spot to talk. How about that bench over there?" Ava followed the detective to the bench, her senses on high alert. What did the detective want to ask her? As they sat down, Detective James pulled out a small notebook and pen. "Ava, I'm investigating the car accident that occurred a few months ago. The one involving you and Ethan." Ava's heart sank. She had been dreading this moment. "What about it?" she asked, trying to sound calm. Detective James looked at her with a piercing gaze. "I need to know what happened that night. Every detail is crucial." Ava took a deep breath, steeling herself for the painful memories that were about to resurface... she remained silent for a while. "Ethan's death wasn't an accident; he was deliberately killed that night, and you were the only other person in the car with him when it happened." The detective's word sent a shiver down her spine. Her eyes widened in shock. "What do you mean? Ethan's death was ruled an accident, wasn't it?" Detective James's expression was grim. "That's what we thought initially, but new evidence has come to light. Ava, Ethan's death was no accident. He was murdered." Ava's mind reeled as she struggled to process this revelation. Murder? How could that be? The accident had been so... random. A terrible tragedy, but not a crime. "What... what makes you think that?" Ava stuttered, her heart racing with a mix of emotions: shock, fear, and a hint of denial. Detective James's eyes narrowed, her gaze piercing through Ava. "Ava, we need to talk about what really happened that night. You were in the car with Ethan, weren't you? You're the only surviving witness... or participant." Ava's heart skipped a beat as she felt a chill run down her spine. "What are you insinuating?" she asked, trying to keep her voice steady. Detective James leaned in closer, her voice taking on a accusatory tone. "I'm saying that you had motive, means, and opportunity. You were the only one with him in that car. And now, it seems, you're the only one who can tell us what really happened." Ava's mind raced as she felt the detective's words closing in around her. "You think I... I had something to do with Ethan's death?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. Detective James's expression was unyielding. "I think you know more than you're letting on, Ava. And I aim to find out what that is." Ava shook her head, trying to clear the fog in her mind. "I... I don't remember anything," she stammered. "The accident, I mean. It's all a blur." Detective James raised an eyebrow. "A blur? That's convenient, Ava. You don't remember anything unusual happening that night? Nothing that might have led to Ethan's... murder?" Ava felt a surge of panic. She was telling the truth - she didn't remember anything significant from that night. But the detective's skeptical gaze made her feel like she was hiding something. "No, nothing," Ava insisted. "I remember being in the car with ethan, and then... sounds of a crash and siren. I woke up in the hospital with no memory of what happened." Detective James scribbled some notes on her pad. "I see. I'll be keeping an eye on you Ava Blackwood, a very close eye" Detective James stood up from the bench, her eyes still fixed on Ava's face. She nodded curtly, as if to emphasize her warning, and then turned to leave. Ava watched, frozen, as the detective walked away, her heels clicking on the pavement. She felt a sense of relief wash over her as the detective disappeared from sight, but it was short-lived. The weight of the detective's words settled heavy on her shoulders, and Ava felt like she was suffocating under the scrutiny. She knew she had to clear her name, but where could she even start? With a sense of trepidation, Ava slowly got up from the bench and began to walk back to her car, her mind racing with thoughts and fears. She knew her life was about to change in ways she couldn't imagine. As she reached her car, she noticed a piece of paper on the windshield. She approached cautiously and saw that it was a note, scribbled in red ink: "We're watching you." Ava's heart skipped a beat as she realized that the detective wasn't the only one keeping an eye on her.
