Richmond's POV
How am I supposed to get back at Cassidy for divorcing me? I haven't seen her miserable face at the prison and I'm told she's left? She's supposed to beg me, plead and cry for me to release her and then I will finally have mercy. How come she's free already?
Claire rushes out of the house, wanting to follow me to the police station.
"Richmond, wait!" I can hear her shouting from the front porch. But I drive off. I don't want her getting mixed up in all this, especially with her pregnancy.
When I get to the station, father is already there, speaking with the commander.
"How did this happen? You let that thief get away? I gave you full evidence of her crime and you let her go just like that?" I scold the commander.
"Mr. Calloway, your wife just happened to be a victim of circumstance."
I look him down, the anger boiling inside of me. "That woman is no longer my wife. She is no longer worthy of that position. She never was. And don't tell me that bullshit, she freaking stole from my company!"
The commanders eyes brightens up with a sudden realization. "Now I understand why the other man called her his wife."
I scrunch up my face at him. "What other man?"
"The one who came to release her. He said Cassidy was his wife."
The commanders words ring in my ear. Cassidy is married? We haven't been divorced for up to a day and she's already married? No way!
"Who is this man? How did he manage to bail her?"
Before the commander can say anything, father speaks up. "We should be more worried about Cassidy's next move. If she can get married in an instant, who knows what she can do next."
I look over to father. He has a point. Cassidy is getting out of hand. She has never been rebellious, why can't she just know her place and stay there like always?
"Come on, Son, let's go. We have better things to handle." Father stands up from his chair to leave but I am not satisfied yet. I feel the commander isn't giving us full details of what happened.
"Father! We need to find out exactly how Cassidy managed to escape. I thought you said this case was very important to you? Why are you suddenly leaving things hanging? We need more answers."
Father has a stern expression when he looks at me this time. "Are you saying we should worry about the past when someone is already plotting against our future?"
My blood runs cold at fathers words. What does he mean by plotting against our future? Did he really think Cassidy would go all out to seek revenge for what we have done to her today? She knew better than to cross the Calloways. What we did to her tonight was just the tip of the iceberg. We can destroy her life in an instant if we want to.
I don't want to stress father or argue with him so we leave. His driver takes his car home while he rides in mine.
"I believe they aren't telling us everything, Father. There's more to this story and they're purposely leaving us in the dark. Who in the world would release Cassidy when we have her locked in?"
Father sighs and shakes his head. "Aren't you happy she's out? You never wanted her to answer for her crimes in the first place."
"That's not it, father. I found it hard to believe that Cassidy would do such a thing and I wanted to teach her a lesson first before removing charges."
Father turns to me angrily. "So you planned on removing charges without my consent? I haven't fully given you the company and you're already acting like this? How can you be so reckless?"
I glance over at Father. What's wrong with me removing charges from a woman who was my wife? Did father really mean to leave her in prison?
"I have always told you to leave that woman, Richmond. Now you value her more than the company. Do you think that's how I managed to make Calloway group what it is today?"
It's my turn to be silent now.
"You still blame me for leaving your mother but that's what I had to do to keep the company strong. I did it to secure a good future for you. And now you're grown up, you keep disappointing me every single time. Even now, that Cassidy still has a hold on you." Fathers tone is filled with spite.
His words sting in my heart. Was it wrong that I wanted to free Cassidy from a case which happened five years ago? We were once married, isn't that enough reason to have mercy on her? But everything I do somehow displeases Mondrich Calloway, my father. He and mother are back together but those years living alone with him were emotionally draining. Everyday I had to live up to an unreasonable standard because anything lower could just piss him off. And even with all of that, he never valued me as a son. Maybe he has one somewhere else giving him the pride and joy he seeks so much.
We arrive at home and I park in front of the house. Quickly I step out of the car to help father come down from his seat. Instead of giving me his hand as usual, he pushes me aside with his walking stick. Worry lines etch on my forehead as I stand aside and watch him go alone. Claire is at the front porch. She welcomes him but he doesn't pay her any attention.
Her gaze settles on me and she comes to meet me at the car. "What happened at the station. Why is father angry?"
"Cassidy was bailed," I tell her plainly.
"What?" I can hear the shock in her tone. Claire was the one who brought the evidence pointing Cassidy to the fraud. Now I see why father preferred her to Cassidy. Claire has always been loyal to the company. And watching me always defend Cassidy and reject his advice to marry Claire must have made him angry. Now I've married her and it seems he's still not satisfied.
I need to sort this out quickly. The commander isn't telling me everything I need to know. But most importantly, I feel father is also hiding something. Why didn't he call me immediately when he heard Cassidy had left?
And what's that about Cassidy being married? Had she planned this the whole time? Or was it just easy to replace me? No way! And whoever was able to bail her must know a lot about Calloway group, enough to put the company in trouble.
"Come on, lets go inside," Claire says as she grabs my hand.
We begin to walk towards the house when my phone comes on with a text from Cassidy. My blood runs colds on seeing her message.
MEET ME AT THE DIAMOMD HOTELS NOW, OR CONSIDER YOUR CLAIM OVER CALLOWAY GROUP GONE!
I frown at the text, my heart racing. What does she mean? My major claim over Calloway group is the child in Claire's womb.
