Chapter 3 The Snow May Come Early

"Boss!"     As Toni shuffled towards her office, Cathy called after her. She heard it but didn't respond.     "Boss!" Cathy followed her inside as Toni put the folder on the table and said softly,     "Close the door."     Cathy closed the door, looking embarrassed.     "Say it." Looking at her, Toni knew that she had something to say and asked, "What could be worse?"     Cathy said, "Miss Bailey asked me to tell you that the train departs at 12:30 pm."     "Train?" Toni wondered aloud, "Where am I going?"     "Boss, don't you know? You are now the Deputy General Manager of the North Region, and your office is moved to Miss Bailey's office. Also, you're going to City B on a business trip with her today. Miss Bailey has already booked the tickets. You should go back and pack. Leave the office to me."     Moving into her office and facing her every day? She had booked tickets for a business trip at noon as soon as she took up the position of General Manager in the morning. Everyone knew that she could "foretell things."     Toni laughed secretly, took a deep breath, and said to Cathy, "I see. I'll go back home now. Please handle things in the office for me."     Cathy smiled and said, "That's my duty. Miss Bailey said that she'd wait for you on floor B3 and drive you home."     Toni was speechless.     She neatly packed up her things and headed to floor B3.     Standing alone in the elevator, she practiced a natural smile with her reflection in a mirror.     The position of General Manager of the North Region belonged to Gina Bailey in the end, and Toni was appointed as the Deputy General Manager. From now on, she would be Gina's "right-hand woman" and a "core asset" to her team.     To put it bluntly, Toni was just going to act as her assistant.     She didn't want to leave the office.     She could've quit a year ago or a year later, but definitely not now.     No matter what kind of connections or means Gina used to win her long-awaited position, it was her victory. Toni had not reconciled with this, but she had to accept it.     There are countless paths in the world, including sunlit avenues, difficult paths full of obstacles, and naturally there are also shortcuts hidden in the shadows. People walk along highways and shortcuts.     If Gina thought she could make her feel humiliated or angry and force her to leave, she was wrong.     Toni would stay here until she got everything she wanted.     When she arrived on floor B3, Gina's car lights lit up.     The car window lowered, and Gina was sat inside waving at her with a smile.   "Miss Smith." Gina leaned her arm out of the car window and smiled at Toni. She held the steering wheel with one hand, saying, "I'm a little worried about this business trip. We have to meet our business partners and inspect the counters. You know Mr. Cook of Universe Group, right? This meeting is very important. I just got this job. I thought that if you came with me, I should feel more relaxed. You joined the company earlier than me, and you have more credentials and experience than I do. That's why I dragged you here before discussingit with you. You aren't mad, are you?"     Toni looked at her false smile, greeted her with the same expression, and got into the front passenger seat with an air of politeness.     "Of course, no problem. Feel free to ask me if you have any questions. Miss Bailey, do you know where I live? Toni pulled out her seatbelt and fastened it with a click.     "Please, tell me." Gina drove towards the ground level and turned on the navigation system.     As Toni told Gina her home address, Gina replied after uttering, "Huh, what a coincidence. It's the same apartment building I'm moving to next week. Do you live in Block D?" It seems that I'm also moving into Block D. Which floor do you live on? Maybe we'll be neighbors."     In addition to working in the same office, are they going to live in the same apartment building as well?     Toni couldn't figure out what was on Gina's mind, causing the smile on her face to become uncontrollably stiff.     But Gina continued to smile brightly and said, "Miss Smith, you must feel awkward about facing me day and night in the future. I know you hate me. So I booked a two-day and one-night business trip for us. Hopefully, we can use this opportunity to warm up to each other. Miss Smith, I'd really appreciate your guidance in the future."     As far as Toni could remember, she and Gina had worked as colleagues for three years. In the past three years, they had dissed each other countless times, with both of them winning half of the time. They both knew they hated each other. Toni had always felt that Gina was best at framing others behind their backs and acting innocent to their face. Only today did she truly discover that deception is her strongest weapon.     An angry fist does not hit a smiling face. Toni ground her teeth to suppress her hatred for Gina.          When they arrived at the apartment's entrance, Gina asked Toni to go upstairs and pack. Meanwhile, she would go home to pick up her luggage and come back to pick up Toni in one hour.     "Miss Bailey, you don't need to come to pick me up." Toni said, "Let's meet at the high-speed rail station."     Gina didn't say much and casually left.     Toni returned to her apartment and suddenly thought of something as she was about to open the door. She looked up to see that the strip she had stuck down in the morning was still intact. She took off the strip and entered her apartment, which was gloomy and cold, as the central heating didn't turn on in late autumn.     She turned on all the lights, went into the bathroom and glanced at the mouthwash cup to find that the handle was facing left.     There were no strange smells in the room, nor any intruders. Everything was normal.     Perhaps all the pressure from work had caused her to hallucinate. Now that the position had been decided, she could finally breathe a sigh of relief.     She casually packed two sets of clothes and put on a thick windbreaker. She used her mobile phone to check the weather forecast. The temperature in City B had fallen below zero this season, so she decided to pack a cashmere scarf. She had just finished packing her toiletries and cosmetics into her suitcase and was just about to leave when she received a call from her mother.     "Are you coming back on New Year's Day?"     Her mother sounded abnormally quiet, causing the hoarseness in her voice to be heard by Toni.     "It depends. I just got a new job position, so I may have to work overtime on New Year's Day." Toni said, improvising.     Her mother seemed to have expected her answer and replied quickly, "Then I will come to you. You're alone in City L, and there's no one taking care of you there. I can come and cook for you, and I can help clean your home."     "Let's see how you feel at the time. You'll be quite tired after all your toing and froing, right?"     Her mother was silent for a moment and suddenly said, "It's been so many years. Are you still unwilling to forgive me? You're my only daughter. I..."     "Mom." Toni interrupted her, "I'm going to the station for a business trip. Let's talk about this later." After hanging up without hesitation, she looked out of the floor-to-ceiling window in her living room. Lead clouds covered the sky above the city. The gray sky made the chilly weather visible to the n***d eye.     The snow may come early this year.
