Chapter Seven - Unsupportive

723 Words
“I'm glad to see you back at work.” Sam said as I walked into his door frame. “Happy to be back. Can we talk?” I said, walking in and shutting the door without waiting for his answer. “Yes. What's going on?” I pulled the ultrasound picture from my bag and handed it to him. “That's our baby.” I said. “I'm eight weeks.” “You said you were on birth control.” He growled at me. I didn't expect anger from him, and I was extremely taken aback. “I am. You've seen me take it.” I told him. He handed me back the ultrasound picture. “How much do you need? Have you called anywhere?” He asked. “What do you mean?” I asked. I was genuinely confused. “For the abortion.” He said coldly. “I'll pay for it. I just need to know how much.” “I haven't called anywhere. I don't think that's what I want.” I said firmly. “Come on, Kassie. You can barely take care of yourself. How are you going to take care of a baby? Either you get the abortion, or we're done. Shannon and I agreed that we wouldn't have children with anyone else.” He snapped. I started crying. “I'll call around.” I whispered. We didn't say another word as I walked out. I immediately went to the accounting office to find Daniel. He saw I was crying and stood up from his desk. “Did you talk to Sam?” He said in a low tone. There was no one else in the office, but I appreciated the attempts at privacy. “Yeah. He doesn't want it.” I said. “He said to get an abortion, or he's breaking up with me.” I felt defeated. I couldn't live without Sam. He had given my life a new meaning and made me believe in love again. I also wasn't sure I could go through with an abortion. “What a piece of shit.” Daniel said. “It's your body, Kassie. You get to make the decision on this. If he doesn't care about you enough to stick it out, the he doesn't deserve to have a say.” “I'm going to call around and get some information. I'll make a decision.” I said. I spent the rest of the afternoon on the phone while I caught up on work. It was a blur of different clinics. I went over my last period, the ultrasound at the hospital, the different types. I settled on a clinic and got the pricing, and set a date for the end of the week. I went to Sam's office. “$900. I'm going Friday.” I said. “One second, I'll write you a check. How many days do you want to plan to be out for?” He asked. He pulled out his check book and began writing. “I'm not sure.” I said. “Just keep me posted on when you're coming back in. No rush.” He shrugged his shoulders and waived his hand as he spoke, and then handed me the check. “Thank you.” I said softly. “Are you taking Friday off to come with me?” “I can't go with you, I have clients. Maybe I'll come over after to see you.” I walked out of his office without saying a word. How could he leave me alone in this? I called Jasmine and relayed the conversation to her. She agreed he was being awful. She thought he at least should offer to come with me, but agreed he shouldn't give me an ultimatum. She walked me through how her abortion went several years ago. I admitted to her that I didn't really want to go through with it. I never believed in abortion, and I had grown attached to the baby seemingly overnight. I told her I wasn't sure I could live with myself afterward. However, I also couldn't lose Sam. I didn't want our relationship to end.  I called Daniel who offered to come with me after I told him everything. I was happy I wouldn't have to go throough it alone.
