Chapter One: The Call of the Moon
Silver Hollow was a town that hid its secrets, like fog, hugging saw-toothed mountains and winding through dense pines that edged it. To the human residents, it was a charming village of coffee houses and fall festivals. To Lila Grayson, it was a jail she’d fled—and now, four years later, one she was stepping back into. The air was heavy with damp earth and cedar as she drove her old sedan down the curving road, the Pacific Northwest sky battered purple overhead. In the backseat, her twins Aria and Finn, wrestled over a borrowed tablet, their laughter a thread to the life she’d created far from here. Lila’s fingers gripped the steering wheel tightly. Silver Hollow was no town; it was the center of the Blackwood pack, an older family of werewolves than the woods themselves. She was born an omega, the lowest level on the pack’s close-knit hierarchy, escaping plans forever just beyond her grasp. Four years earlier, she’d endured a full moon, her heart racing, as the mate bond activated with Caleb Blackwood, the pack’s golden son. His hazel eyes had flared with hers with a promise of eternity—until he’d shattered it all. In public, before the whole pack, he’d spurned her, his tone icy as he’d told her she wasn’t worthy to be luna. The memory seared her, an open wound yet to close. She’d run that night, not only away from Caleb but from censure by the pack, her stomach barely beginning to swell with the twins Caleb was unaware she carried. Aria and Finn were her entire world now, their sparkling eyes and untamed curls reminding her of what she had struggled for. But the letter in her glovebox, penned in the trembling script of her deceased mother’s best friend, had beckoned her back. Silver Hollow is in peril. The twins need to be saved. No explanation, only urgency. Lila didn’t believe the pack, but she believed her instincts, and they were howling that her children were not safe. “Mommy, are we there yet?” Finn’s little voice interrupted, his face nose-pressed against the glass. Four years old, he was too inquisitive to fault, his hazel eyes—too much like Caleb’s—littered with excitement. “Soon, buddy,” Lila replied, pasting a smile on her lips. Aria, always the critic, turned away from the tablet, frowning. Is It that wolves are here?” she pressed, her voice tiny but with an edge to it. Lila’s heart stuttered. The twins were still ignorant of what they were, not yet. Their werewolf blood was something she’d kept hidden close to her heart, particularly since she’d caught their eyes shining in moonlight, a portent of something odd, something powerful. “Just myths,” Lila lied, her tone flat. “This is where I grew up. It’s… special.”. The road curved, and Silver Hollow appeared in the distance, its street lights shining like stars fading in the evening light. Lila’s chest constricted as she drove past the old oak where she and Caleb had so many years ago carved their initials, a childhood dream now tainted with time. She coasted into the Moonlit Brew’s gravel parking lot, the only coffee shop in town, where her friend Mira worked behind the bar. Mira was human but had been told about the pack's existence—a secret Lila had placed her life in her hands. The shop Inside was warm, with the aroma of espresso and cinnamon. Mira, whose hair was purple-streaked and whose smile was infectious, was wiping down the counter. “Lila freaking Grayson!” she bellowed, jumping behind the counter to wrap her in a hug. “You’re back, and you’ve brought the cute troublemakers of the world!” Aria and Finn snickered as Mira mussed their hair, offering each of them a cookie. Tension dissipated from Lila, but barely. “Thanks for crashing here,” she breathed. “Just until I get my act together.” Mira’s eyes gentled, picking up on the underlying tension in Lila’s voice. “You’re pack, Lila. But are you sure you’re ready for this? The pack’s been. Tense. Caleb’s in charge now, you know.”. Lila’s stomach knotted. Caleb. She knew she’d see him, but the sound of his name stung just the same. “I’m not here for him,” she told herself firmly. “I’m here for my children.” Mira nodded, although her eyes darted over to the twins, who were doodling on napkins right now. “They’re special, Lila. You can’t keep that a secret forever.” Before she could even speak, the doorbell rang above the entrance and the air grew heavy with the presence of someone that stoked her wolf instincts. She spun around, and there he was—Caleb Blackwood, all broad shoulders and tightly contained energy, entering the shop as if he had claimed over the darkness. His hair had grown longer, dark waves spilling across his brow, but those hazel eyes were unchanged, slicing through her guard. The mate bond, sleeping but never lost, awakened, a bitter reminder of what she had lost. “Lila,” he growled, his voice low, rough with something indefinable. He regarded her like a ghost, his eyes running over her face, then focusing on the twins. His brows furrowed, a momentary look of confusion on his face. “Caleb,” she answered, her tone as stiff as ice but her heart pounding. She stood between Aria and Finn, instinctively protecting them. The twins were happily unaware, still coloring, but Mira eyed them warily. “I’ve heard you’re back,” Caleb spoke, taking a slow step forward. “I didn’t know you ever—” “Come back to where I was broken?” Lila cut in, her voice sharp. “I’m not here for a reunion, Caleb. I’m here because I have no choice.” His jaw tightened, guilt flashing in his eyes. “Lila, I—” “Save it,” she spat, her heart racing. She did not wish to hear his apologies, not now, not ever. But the way he regarded the twins, as if they were working something out for him, made her shiver. He did not know. Not yet. The door chimed again, and a new man entered, clean and predatory. The guy was lean, silver-streaked locks fell down his back, and a smile that didn’t quite reach his eyes. Lila's wolf senses prickled—this was no normal pack member. “Caleb,” the man stated, his voice smooth as silk. “You didn’t mention we had. Guests.” Caleb’s stance prickled. “Damien Voss,” he stated briefly. “Alpha of the Thorn pack. He’s here to broker disputes over land.” Damien’s eyes flickered to Lila, and then to the twins, too long. “And who is this?” he inquired, his smile expanding. “You have a. distinctive aura, my dear.” Lila chilled, yet she didn’t retreat. “Lila Grayson,” she answered, voice steady. “Just passing through.” “Going through?” Damien’s eyes flashed with excitement, and Lila detected the faint flicker of an alpha power waking up in them, a warning sign. “Silver Hollow is pretty possessive about what happens within it. Especially those with. Abilities.” Aria looked up, her eyes catching the light, and for a split second, they glowed, a soft silver that made Damien’s smile falter. Lila’s heart stopped. She scooped Aria into her arms, grabbin” Finn’s hand. “We’re leaving,” she said, brushing past Caleb and Damien. “Lila, wait—” Caleb yelled out, but she was already disappearing from the door, followed by the sound of Mira’s running. The night air hit her in the face, but she didn’t halt until she’d reached the car. She buckled the twins into their seats, her hands trembling. “What’s wrong, Mommy?” Finn asked softly. “Nothing, baby,” Lila lied, trying to smile. Mira slid into the passenger seat, her face pale. “That was Damien Voss? Lila, he’s bad news. I’ve heard rumors—his pack’s been sniffing around, looking for something. Or someone.” Lila’s hands tightened around the steering wheel as she inched onto the road, the warning of the letter echoing in her head. The twins had to be protected. She glanced into the rearview mirror, hoping halfheartedly to see Caleb or Damien following, but the road was empty. For now. At Mira’s cozy apartment over the coffee shop, Lila put the twins into bed, their gentle snores soothing her frazzled nerves. Mira gave her a cup of tea, her face stern. “You owe me an honest answer, Lila. What are you here for, really? Lila halted, then took out the letter from her pocket and gave it to Mira. “It’s from someone my mother trusted. They told me that the twins are in danger. I have no idea why, but… Aria’s eyes glowed tonight, Mira. Finn’s did as well. It’s not normal, even for werewolves.”. Mira’s eyes went wide as she read. “This states the pack is being attacked by outside forces. And there’s ‘lunar gifts’ here. Lila, do you believe…?” “I don’t know,” Lila admitted, sobbing. “But I can’t lose anything to them. Not Caleb, not Damien, not the pack. They’re mine.”. Mira squeezed her hand. “We’ll manage. But you need to be careful. Caleb’s not the same man who hurt you. He’s lost his mind ever since you left. And Damien… he’s not available for chat.” Lila merely nodded, but her mind reeled. Caleb’s guilt, Damien’s guilty look, the twins’ shining eyes—too much. She fled out onto the balcony, needing air, and stared up at the growing moon in the sky. Its energy awakened her wolf, a pent-up power she hadn’t experienced in years. She was stronger now, but Silver Hollow had a way of making her remember all that she stood to lose. A stir In the leaves beneath interrupted her concentration. She leaned forward over the railing, her sensitized senses detecting something—a scent of musk, leather, and razor edge, like blood. A shadow shifted, too calculated to be an animal. Her heart pounded against her breast. Someone was spying. “Lila?” Mira yelled from within, but Lila remained silent. She peered into the darkness, her wolf instincts screaming. And then she saw something—a pair of eyes, hot amber, fixed on the balcony. Not Caleb’s. Not Damien’s. Another. The eyes disappeared, and a growling sound echoed across the evening, and her spine tingled. Lila hurried inside and shut the door, her thoughts frantic. The letter, Damien’s interest, twins’ abilities—it all seemed to fit together somehow. And the person out there knew more. She peered in on Aria and Finn, their serene faces a relief to the tempest raging inside her. Lila returned to guard them, but Silver Hollow had already struck, eyeing the mortals. Caleb’s guilt, Damien’s caution, and now a stalker in the dark—she was deeper than she’d intended. As she collapsed onto the couch, holding the letter, one idea seared sharp: she’d defend her twins at all costs. But the secrets she’d been keeping—their father, their powers—were starting to unravel, and the truth would bring it all crashing down.
