Gwen groaned in bed as her alarm beeped loudly. She reached over and turned it off, before yawning loudly, stretching out her arms and legs.
It was a new day, a new dawn, and another happy day to go to work.
Smiling happy as she watched the sun rise fully, she stood up from the bed and prepared breakfast for herself and her grandmother before taking her bath to leave for work.
After cooking, she swept and arranged the house. Then she walked back go her room to prepare for work. After brushing her teeth and she took her bath, she got dressed formally to go to work.
Taking her bag and heading to her grandmother's room, she called wearily; " Gran Gran good morning, breakfast is ready, I left it on the table for you and I'm off to work."
Surprisingly her grandmother was already awake, which was something that never happens normally. Gwen was genuinely surprised.
"Woah, Granny, you're awake by this time? To what do we owe the pleasant surprise ?" she said smiling.
"Don't talk back at me like that this early in the morning," Her grandmother snapped. "I always wake up early, I just pretend to sleep back so you could do all the work." She said.
"Right, or you could just wake up early and watch me do all the work instead," Gwen laughed. "Sometimes it's hard to read you, Gran Gran. "
"Don't start scolding me, it's too early Gwen," Her grandmother said as she arranged her bed and Gwen helped her with it as well.
" Who said I was scolding you? I was just saying my mind," Gwen said. "Maybe it's your conscience judging you, granny."
"Conscience, my foot," Her grandmother said. "Even conscience won't be able to stand before me if it sees me. I have got no guilt, my dear Gweneviere."
Gwen smiled. " Well if you say so granny, " She said. "I have to go to work now so I won't be late. Your breakfast is on the table and I will be back early tonight in case you need me to do anything."
"I don't need you to do anything for me Gwen, I just want you to live your life. "Her grandmother said. "And don't come early tonight."
Gwen's brows furrowed.
"Why?" She inquired.
Her grandmother looked at her with a bad eye. "Because I'm planning on setting this house atmosphere with romance since my boyfriend is going to come over tonight and I don't want you using your "single" cologne to ruin the atmosphere," He grandmother said and Gwen's eyes widened.
"Ugh, granny, that's rude!" She exclaimed as she put her hands on her hips. " And since when did you have a boyfriend?" She laughed. "You never told me you had one. Do you even have one?"
"Of course I do!" Her grandmother snapped back and Gwen flinched away from her. "I'm just 50 and I'm still at my prime for an old lady. I'm not like my 25 year old single granddaughter who doesn't even have a man friend let alone a boyfriend!"
"Granny! " Gwen sighed as she put her hand on her forehand. "Not again, please. I have to go to work, and I'll appreciate it if you stop nagging me to get a boyfriend."
"Am I?" Her grandmother said like Gwen was accusing her of something she didn't do. "I'm just trying to say that I have a boyfriend that's all. "
"Granny, I know what you're trying to say here, I'm not a fool." Gwen said. "You're trying to tell me to get a boyfriend. "
"If you do know then why are you making me repeat myself?" Granny frowned as she folded her arms.
"I told you, granny, I'm not interested in love yet. " Gwen sighed. "I just want to work and take care of you. "
"Well I don't want you taking care of me anymore." Granny said. "I need you to start taking care of yourself. I'm just waiting for my time to go to heaven and I cannot leave until I carry my great grandchildren, okay?" She said and Gwen rolled her eyes. "I've experienced love iny life. I want you to also experience love in your life. Run away and find someone new and get married, I don't care. Just don't live your life like a widow when you haven't even gotten married already, Gwen."
And with that, she stomped off.
Gwen's mouth was wide open in awe. She couldn't believe what get grandmother just said.
She didn't care if you ran away and got married without having her there?
Why would she even say she was waiting for her death?
Her grandmother had really gone out of her mind, she concluded. Annoyed at her grandmother's gibberish, she yelled back; "I'm not running away to get married to someone without your blessings, grandma, and you're not dying on me anytime soon!"
She only heard her grandmother's loud grumble from the dinning, and not waiting for her reply, she headed to work.
Gwen was happy with her small, peaceful life. Her mom died when she was still little, and her dad ran away after. She had only her grandparents taking care of her. Yes, she had no parents, but her grandparents never made her feel alone. They were there for her.
And now it's been three years her granddad died, and she just wanted to take care of her grandmother just the way she was taken care of by them. But her grandmother won't let her. The woman believed in true love.
What old woman in her 50s will still be thinking about love at her age?
Certainly her own grandmother did. It was like she was the grandmother of her grandmother, and her grandmother was her, because the woman never acted her age. She still always wanted to feel pretty. If her grandmother was her age when she was in her prime, Gwen was sure her grandmother would have had a lot of boyfriends.
Thinking about her grandmother in her prime having boyfriends made Gwen laugh.
Her grandmother had a nice and lovely youth, and Gwen loved her own youth as well. She knew only three places in her life. Her place of work which was the town's only central bank, the restaurant a few blocks away from her house and her own house. She had friends, but her friends were at the bank.
Gwen had places she would love to visit. She would love to visit a beach, or just travel out of the world to places like Switzerland, London and more. But she knew she couldn't go. Her life was back home with her grandmother, and she was happy that life.
But now her grandmother was going out of her way to push her out of her comfort zone.
Gwen knew one thing; love wasn't for her for now. And she knew one day she would meet the one for her, but it had to be at her own pace, not with her grandmother cajoling her.
