Book 1 part 1
Standing here at the Flyer academy gates, questions like: "How did it come to this?" and "Why am I here?" Are swirling around me like a raging tornado. To find the answers to these questions we would have to go back about two days ago or better yet five years, when everything changed, everything.
It was a day like any other day. After school me and my twin brother Matt were on our way home; we always took the short cut through the ancient ruins, so why was today so special you ask? Well back then we were 11, a couple of kids wishing for something more than the drag of a life we were living, Who would have guessed our dreams would come true so soon.
"Butter what if wind masters were real, would you wanna be one?"
"I already told you Maya, stop giving me those stupid nick names! Why can't you be like a normal person and call people by their names, I mean they were given for a reason." As I turned to lecture him on how names were only given to control us, and that by calling him Butter I was just liberating him from such oppression, something caught my eye. Just then a couple of Ountira floaters came over to us,
"This is our turf now, no trespassing." Said a slimy looking character. The others started to slowly emerge from behind some of the fallen pillars and out of a barely standing building.
"You should leave while we're asking nicely Cenean trash!" Looking back I probably should have just let it go but what can I say, I’m a rebel.
"This place doesn't belong to anyone, especially not a bunch of punks like you." The guy in the front just sneered at me.
"Whoa guys, looky what we have here.” As he reached for my chin I slapped his hand away and gave him my deadliest glare. “What are you any ways, I can't tell if you're a boy or a girl?" They all started to laugh.
"What's that supposed to mean?" He was really starting to get on my nerves. Yeah I’m a bit of a tomboy so what? Plus my short hair is only because my little brother Mike took scissors to it while I was sleeping. With creamy tanned skin and hazel eyes like my mother I like to think I’m alright. I’ve always been on the taller side which made this jerk trying to look down at me comical, especially since despite him looking older we were basically the same size.
"I mean try wearing a dress next time, so that maybe it would make it easier for a gentleman like me, who would never hit a girl able to recognize the difference." After that it’s sort of a blur. One minute they were laughing and the next they were picking up their bloodied leader after Matt decked him.
"Nobody talks to my sister like that. So what she doesn't wear a dress every day, and what if she is tall and a bit unladylike sometimes. How I see it right now, the only one here who should be wearing a dress, is you. Luckily I have no problem hitting little girls!" It was a good thing Butter ended his little speech because anymore talk about me looking like a boy and he was going to be the next one hitting the ground out here. As we started to turn and leave I felt proud of my twin brother. He was truly my knight in shining armor always has been, even though his sister complex can be a bit overwhelming at times. Just as we were about to leave the leader stood up wiping his bloodied lip.
"What's the rush?” Giving us a bloodied grin, I felt a shiver run down my back at how sinister he looked. “My dad always said Land dwellers had no manners." Spitting out more blood he stood to his feet. "How can you leave so soon, when the party's just begun." Then he made a whip out of wind "Come on tough guy, let's play." He was a ranked flyer, there was no way we could win. Looking over at Matt, I knew we were in trouble.
