The night the Blood Awakened
The morning should have been ordinary.
But the moment I stepped onto the training grounds, I felt it.
Something was wrong.
The air felt heavy, like the forest itself was holding its breath. Wolves were already gathered across the field, some sparring, others practicing shifts, but the usual noise felt muted. Conversations were quieter. Movements more cautious.
My wolf stirred uneasily beneath my skin.
Danger.
I rolled my shoulders and stepped into the circle, gripping the wooden practice blade Lina had tossed to me earlier.
“You are distracted,” she said from across the circle.
Her stance was balanced and ready, golden eyes fixed on me. “Again.”
“I am focusing,” I replied.
“You say that every time you lose.”
She lunged.
The wooden blade struck mine with a sharp crack. I barely managed to block the second strike before jumping back.
“You see?” she said.
“I am warming up.”
She snorted.
“You have been warming up for ten minutes.”
I ignored her and glanced toward the tree line surrounding the training grounds.
The forest looked normal.
But the feeling in my chest refused to disappear.
Lina noticed my distraction.
“What are you looking for?”
“I do not know.”
Before she could respond, a scent drifted across the training grounds.
It hit me like a lightning strike.
My entire body froze.
Warm.
Wild.
Dangerous.
My wolf surged forward violently.
Mate.
The word exploded inside my head.
The practice blade slipped from my fingers and hit the ground.
All around the field, wolves turned toward the same direction.
The Alpha had arrived.
He stepped onto the training grounds surrounded by two council guards. His presence immediately changed the atmosphere of the entire space.
Conversations stopped.
Movements slowed.
Respect and fear filled the air.
I had seen him hundreds of times before.
But today felt different.
He was taller than most wolves in the pack, his dark hair falling slightly across his forehead. His expression was calm but cold, like a storm waiting quietly on the horizon.
His eyes scanned the field.
Then they landed on me.
The moment our gazes locked
The mate bond snapped into place.
The sensation was overwhelming.
Heat rushed through my veins. My heart began pounding so hard I could hear it echo in my ears. My wolf pushed forward, desperate, recognizing what my mind had not prepared for.
Mate.
The Alpha stiffened.
His reaction was immediate.
His eyes darkened, but not with warmth.
With tension.
The silence across the training field deepened as other wolves began to notice the strange energy between us.
Lina stepped closer to me slowly.
“Lyra,” she whispered.
“I know.”
My voice sounded strange to my own ears.
The Alpha’s gaze remained fixed on me.
For a moment I thought I saw recognition in his expression.
But it vanished just as quickly.
His posture straightened.
The Alpha of the pack stepped forward.
“Training will resume,” he said calmly.
His voice carried across the entire field.
Authority.
Final.
But the mate bond still pulsed between us.
Every step he took closer made the sensation stronger.
Unavoidable.
When he reached the center of the training ground, his eyes returned to mine.
The moment stretched.
My wolf waited.
Hoped.
Because the mate bond meant something sacred among wolves.
It meant fate.
Connection.
Partnership.
But the Alpha’s expression hardened.
His voice cut across the silence.
“This bond is a mistake.”
The words hit harder than any physical blow.
A ripple of shock moved across the wolves gathered around us.
Lina stepped closer to my side.
“Alpha”
He raised a hand.
Silencing her.
His gaze never left mine.
“The council will investigate the cause of this anomaly.”
Anomaly.
That was what he called it.
My chest tightened painfully.
The bond pulsed again.
Confused.
Rejected.
“Until then,” he continued, “there will be no acknowledgment of this connection.”
Murmurs spread across the training grounds.
Some wolves looked surprised.
Others looked relieved.
I forced myself to stand still.
If he expected me to beg or protest, he would be disappointed.
Instead I lifted my chin slightly.
“Understood.”
Something flickered in his eyes.
But before either of us could speak again
A howl echoed from the forest.
Not the normal call of patrol wolves.
This one carried warning.
Danger.
Every wolf on the field turned toward the tree line instantly.
Another howl followed.
Closer.
Lina’s hand moved toward the dagger at her waist.
“That did not sound like our patrol.”
The Alpha’s expression sharpened.
“Guards.”
The two council wolves stepped forward immediately.
But the warning came too late.
The forest exploded with movement.
Three wolves burst from the trees, their bodies moving unnaturally fast. Their eyes glowed with a deep red light that made my stomach twist.
Cursed wolves.
“Attack!” someone shouted.
Chaos erupted across the training ground.
Students shifted into wolf form. Warriors rushed forward to intercept the attackers.
One of the cursed wolves lunged directly toward me.
Its jaws opened wide.
Lina pushed me aside just in time.
The creature crashed into the ground where I had been standing seconds earlier.
“Run!” she shouted.
But the wolf was already turning again.
Its red eyes locked onto me.
It was not interested in anyone else.
Only me.
The Alpha moved instantly.
His speed blurred across the field as he intercepted the creature mid leap. His fist slammed into its skull, sending the wolf crashing across the ground.
But another attacker appeared behind him.
Then another.
Too many.
“These are not rogues,” Lina muttered.
“No,” I said quietly.
“They came for me.”
One of the cursed wolves circled slowly.
Its gaze remained fixed on my face.
Recognition.
Hatred.
Then I saw it.
A symbol burned into the wolf’s shoulder.
The same symbol carved into the dagger dropped during the attack three nights ago.
My blood ran cold.
Someone inside the pack had sent them.
The wolf lunged again.
This time I did not run.
Something inside me snapped.
Heat surged violently through my veins.
The silver markings beneath my skin ignited.
Power exploded outward from my body.
The ground beneath my feet cracked.
A shockwave blasted across the training field, throwing nearby wolves backward.
Even the Alpha staggered slightly.
Silence followed.
My vision sharpened.
The world looked different.
I could see energy moving through the air like invisible threads connecting everything around me.
The cursed wolf froze.
Fear replaced the rage in its red eyes.
Slowly, it stepped back.
The other attackers did the same.
One of them shifted suddenly.
Its body twisted and reshaped until a man stood where the wolf had been.
His clothes were dark and torn from the transformation.
But the symbol on his shoulder remained visible.
He stared at me in stunned disbelief.
“So it is true.”
The Alpha stepped forward protectively.
“Who sent you?”
The man ignored him.
His eyes never left my face.
“You should have died with the rest of them.”
My stomach dropped.
“What are you talking about?”
He smiled faintly.
“The royal bloodline.”
The words spread through the training field like fire.
Shock filled the faces of the surrounding wolves.
The Alpha’s expression hardened.
“You will answer for this.”
But the man only laughed softly.
“It is already too late.”
His gaze returned to me.
The silver power still surged through my veins, stronger with every passing second.
The man slowly dropped to one knee.
Not from injury.
From respect.
He bowed his head.
“Welcome back,” he said quietly.
His voice carried across the silent field.
“Your Highness.”
