Chapter1
I felt a mix of emotions as I packed my things. Excitement, fear, sadness, and hope all swirled around inside me. I knew that this was a big step for me, but I also knew that it was what was best for my family.
I hugged my parents and siblings goodbye, trying to hold back the tears. Then I got on the bus and watched as my town disappeared from view.
As the bus rolled on, I thought about what lay ahead. A new job, a new city, a new life. I didn't know what to expect, but I knew that I had to be brave.
I closed my eyes and took a deep breath. When I opened them again, I saw the city skyline in the distance. It was imposing and impressive, and I felt a mixture of awe and trepidation. I had never been to such a big place before. What would it be like?
As the bus pulled into the station, I took another deep breath. I was about to find out.
I stepped off the bus and onto the bustling city streets. Cars and people rushed by, and I felt like I was being swept up in a current of activity.
I took a moment to gather my bearings and look around. Everything was so different from my small town. The buildings were tall and imposing, and the people looked busy and purposeful.
I felt like a fish out of water. How would I ever fit in?
I gathered my bags and started to make my way to the address I had been given. I clutched the piece of paper in my hand, as if it were a lifeline.
I had to find the house where I would be working. I wasn't sure what to expect, but I was determined to make the best of it.
Finally, I reached the address. It was a large, imposing house, with a well-manicured lawn and a grand front door. I hesitated for a moment, then took a deep breath and rang the bell.
A moment later, the door opened, and a man in a suit stood before me. He looked me up and down, then said, "You must be Anna. Come in, I'll show you around." I stepped inside, my heart pounding in my chest. This was it. I was really here, about to start my new life.
The man led me through the house, showing me the different rooms and explaining my duties. He spoke quickly and matter-of-factly, and I tried to take it all in. Then he showed me to the room where I would be staying.
It was small, but it was clean and comfortable. I would be sharing a bathroom with the other maids, but I didn't mind. I was just grateful to have a place to stay.
The man then showed me to the kitchen, where I would be helping with the cooking and cleaning. As I looked around the kitchen, my eyes fell on a woman who was busy chopping vegetables.
She turned and smiled at me, her eyes kind and welcoming. "Hello," she said. "I'm Maria, the head cook. I'm so glad you're here. We could use the help."
I smiled back at her, grateful for her friendly face. "I'm Anna," I said. "It's nice to meet you."
"Let me show you the ropes," Maria said, and she began to teach me the ins and outs of the kitchen.
I was eager to learn, and I soaked up her every word. Before I knew it, I was chopping vegetables, washing dishes, and helping to prepare food.
I was getting the hang of things, and I started to feel more confident in my new surroundings.
But just when I thought I was settling in, something happened that threw me for a loop. I was carrying a tray of food to the dining room when I heard raised voices coming from inside.
I froze, unsure of what to do. Should I keep going, or should I turn back? I decided to risk it and keep going.
As I entered the dining room, I saw two people arguing, their voices raised in anger and their faces flushed with emotion. I recognized one of them as the man who had shown me around the house, and the other was a woman I had not seen before. They were both clearly upset, and I didn't know what to do.
I stood there, frozen in place, not knowing what to say or do. The man noticed me then, and his face changed. "Anna," he said, "I'm so sorry you had to see this. It's not usually like this here." He turned to the woman and said, "I think we should take a break.
We're not getting anywhere with this.”
The woman looked like she wanted to argue, but she finally nodded and left the room. The man turned back to me, his face still flushed. "I apologize for the scene you just witnessed," he said. "It's not something that happens often here, but it's a difficult situation."
I nodded, unsure of what to say. "I understand," I said finally. "I'm sure it's not easy."
"Thank you for your understanding," he said. "I hope it doesn't put you off from working here. We really could use the help."
I nodded, trying to be brave. "Would you like to take a break?" the man asked. "You must be tired after such a long day."
"Yes, that would be nice," I said. I was grateful for the chance to catch my breath.
He led me to a small sitting room, where I sat down on a comfortable chair. He brought me a cup of tea, and I sipped it slowly, trying to relax. I looked around the room, taking in the bookshelves and the paintings on the walls.
I felt my nerves beginning to settle.
I was just starting to feel at ease when I heard the door open again. I looked up, expecting to see the man who had brought me here, but instead, I saw a woman I had not seen before. She was tall and stately, with dark hair pulled back in a bun. She wore a crisp suit and looked like she meant business.
