The Corporate Execution
The crystal chandelier overhead cast a blinding glare across the grand ballroom of the Hilton. Aria Sterling tightened her grip on her champagne flute. Her knuckles turned white. "I'm sorry, Aria," Cole Harrison said. His voice was flat, devoid of any emotion. "But we are over." Aria didn’t blink. She stared at her fiancé of three years. He looked incredibly handsome in his tailored tuxedo. But to Aria, he suddenly looked like a complete stranger. "Over?" Aria echoed. Her voice was remarkably calm. "Our wedding invitations went out last week, Cole." Cole sneered, stepping back to let someone else join him. From behind his shoulder, Chloe Sterling stepped forward. Aria’s stepsister wore a smug, victorious grin. Her hand slipped smoothly around Cole's arm. "Don't make a scene, Aria," Chloe whispered loudly enough for the nearby guests to hear. "Cole deserves a woman who can actually help his career. A real lady. Not a low-class embarrassment." Whispers erupted around the ballroom. The elite of the corporate world shifted their attention toward them. Phones were raised. Glances were exchanged. "The Board of Directors just approved my promotion to Managing Director," Cole said, lifting his chin arrogantly. "Aria, you are just a regular office employee. You don't fit into my new world. Chloe's family has the connections I need." Aria looked at the two of them. Her heart hammered against her ribs, burning with a mixture of shock and rage. Three years of supporting him, working late nights to help him secure his projects, all thrown away for her toxic stepsister’s family wealth. They didn't realize that Cole's entire project relied on the data framework she had built. Chloe leaned into Cole's side. "Just leave quietly, sister. Don't humiliate yourself further." Aria closed her eyes for exactly one second. When she opened them, the hurt was gone. It was replaced by a cold, calculating fire. She wasn't going to cry. She wasn't going to beg. Slowly, Aria lifted her glass and took a elegant sip of her champagne. "I understand," Aria said clearly, ensuring the surrounding executives heard her. "A disloyal man belongs in the trash anyway. Keep him, Chloe. He suits you perfectly." Cole’s face flushed with sudden anger. "Aria! Watch your mouth!" Aria didn't look at him again. She turned her back on her ex-fiancé, leaving him standing there in stunned silence. As she walked away through the parting crowd, her eyes locked onto the grand staircase leading to the private VIP balcony. Up there, away from the chaos, sat a single man. Xavier Vance. The ruthless, cold-blooded Chairman of Vance Global. The absolute superior who held Cole’s entire career in the palm of his hand. Aria smoothed down her dress and walked straight toward the stairs. The security guards at the base of the VIP stairs immediately stepped forward, blocking her path. "Private area, miss," one of them said, his voice firm. "No guests allowed without an invitation." Aria didn't flinch. She pulled her corporate ID badge from her small clutch purse—the one that granted her access to the highest clearance levels of the firm’s data analytics department. "Tell Chairman Vance that Aria Sterling is here with the unredacted Q4 financial audit files for the Harrison project," Aria said, her voice dropping to a sharp whisper. "The ones his data team has been trying to crack for three weeks." It was a massive gamble. She didn’t have the files on her, but she knew the backend source code inside her head. The guard hesitated, speaking quickly into his earpiece. After a tense silence, he stepped aside and gestured upward. "Go ahead." Aria walked up the plush red steps. With every step she took, the loud chatter of the ballroom faded away. Xavier Vance sat alone at a glass table, a crystal glass of neat whiskey resting near his hand. He was dressed in a pristine charcoal suit that screamed power. His sharp jawline and piercing grey eyes gave him the look of a dangerous apex predator. He didn't look up as she approached. "You have exactly one minute to prove you aren't wasting my time, Miss Sterling," Xavier said. His voice was a low, smooth baritone that sent a sudden shiver down her spine. Aria walked straight over and sat down in the leather chair directly across from him. No one ever sat in his presence without permission, but Aria had nothing left to lose. "My ex-fiancé, Cole Harrison, just traded me for my stepsister's family connections," Aria said, locking her eyes onto his. "He thinks his new promotion makes him untouchable." Xavier finally raised his head. His grey eyes narrowed, assessing her like a chess grandmaster analyzing a new piece. "And why should I care about a minor employee's relationship drama?" "Because Cole is weak. He will let my stepsister's family infiltrate your board of directors," Aria countered smoothly. "But I know your board review is next week. You need a scandal-free, intelligent wife to secure the international merger with the European group. A wife who actually understands your company’s infrastructure." Xavier leaned back, a cold, amused smirk playing on his lips. "Are you proposing to me, Miss Sterling?" "I am proposing a business transaction, Chairman Vance," Aria corrected, leaning forward. "A one-year marriage contract. Your name and protection to help me ruin them, in exchange for my absolute loyalty and the data keys to lock out your rivals." The silence between them stretched, heavy and dangerous. Xavier stared at her for what felt like an eternity, his fingers tapping slowly against his whiskey glass. Aria kept her breathing steady, refusing to back down under his suffocating aura. Slowly, Xavier stood up, towering over her. He reached into his inner suit pocket, pulled out a sleek silver fountain pen, and slid a folded piece of paper across the glass table. It was a pre-drafted non-disclosure and partnership agreement. "You have guts, Aria," Xavier murmured, his eyes flashing with a dangerous intensity. "Sign it. Let’s go show your ex-fiancé what a real promotion looks like."
