The Unspoken Pull
The house was quiet, only the rolling fan was sounding as it rolled. Naomi sat on the couch pretending to read a book, but she kept staring at the door. Her hand opened the edges of the book so firmly.
She heard the familiar sounds of footsteps slowly. Raymond has finally returned home from his basketball practice. As he stepped into the room, he dropped the key on the table and gave her a “why are you still up” look.
“You're up late” he said, falling onto the couch.
“Couldn't sleep,” Naomi said.
She felt his present around her, his scent, so familiar yet somehow not close enough for her.
She had always known there's a constant pull between them she could never show, not even once.
Raymond stretched, running his hands through his dark short hair. “Anything interesting in there” he asked, glancing at the book in her hands.
She immediately closed the book, embarrassed that she hadn't even read one word. “hmm..uh.. you know just school thingy”. She swallowed hard.
He smiled at her,” "Alright .School stuff that kept you up this late”?
Naomi felt her face turning red. “I guess I'm just waiting to see you.”
Raymond looked at her with a “I don't think you should do so look”. “Naomi, you don't have to do that.”
“I know”. She said, her voice was soft and above a whisper. She looked up at him, forming words in her mind. you just don't get it Raymond, you're more than just a brother to me. I can't help it but I love you. But the words never left her lips.
Raymond moved closer to her “look Naomi, your seventeen now, I'm not going to be around you always. You need to start building up your life, having your own things, and as well get a boyfriend he said joking as they both burst into laughter. His tone was gentle and very calm, but those words hit her like a sharp knife.
“Right,” she said . “I get it.” but she didn't. Not really.
They sat in silence, the unspoken words filling the air between them. Naomi held onto the book tighter. Raymond was so close but just a few inches away from her. But each day, he kept pulling farther and farther away from her, even though she kept on hoping he'd stay.
Finally, he stood up looking at her. “Goodnight Naomi, try to get some rest.
She watched him go, her heart sinking as he disappeared. As he shut the door of his room, she realized she was losing him slowly and there's nothing she could do about it.
She stood up to leave, walking down the hallway her book still held tighter in her hands. She walked into her room and shut the door behind her. Why can't I forget about those feelings? How do I have to love my own brother! She wondered about it sinking into her bed.
She pulled out her diary and opened to the last page. She doesn't write every time, only when feelings become too much to bear and tonight was also one of those nights. She started writing with her hand shaking but determined.
Raymond…….
Sometimes I wish things were different. I wish we were different. I don't know how this happened . How my feelings got so mixed up and so messy. But you've always been there for me all my life. No one else sees me the way you do, and I know it's wrong to feel this way, but I f*****g love you. I can't help it.
She stopped writing for a moment, a tear rolling from her eyes. She immediately wiped it away. She wasn't sure if he feels the same way as her or if she could say those words to him or carry it as a secret forever.
As she closed her diary, she heard a knock on the door, her heart sank into her chest. Only one person could be there this late because both of their parents are on a business trip for about a month now.
“Come in,” she said. Her voice was soft and barely above a whisper.
Raymond opened the door slowly, his eyes glancing around the room, “I thought you'd be asleep by now” he said
Naomi gave a fake smile “just thinking”
He nodded, “sure” stepping into her room and closing the door behind him. He sat at the edge of her bed. For a moment, they sat in silence, a million of unsaid words hanging between them.
“Naomi, I didn't mean to push you away,” he said finally, his voice low. “You're my sister, and I really care about you a lot more than anything. Buy but… you have to know there are some feelings we have to ignore because we're siblings.
His words hit her like a sharp knife. Why does he have to say things that hurt me so badly she wondered in her mind. I get I'm in love with my brother but still he could be nice. He was right anyways, there are some feelings that could be ignored between us. But I don't want to. I f*****g love him.
“But… you don't understand how hard it is, I feel like I'm losing you.
He looked at her gently and said “you'll never lose me, I'll always be there for you but not just the way you want.”
Raymond stood up to leave. As he reached the door, he looked back at her, his expression unreasonable. “Goodnight Naomi”.
“Wait” she said as he was about to shut the door.
“Raymond please don't go, I want you to stay here with me” he couldn't just leave her like that so he went to her back and sat so close to her making her rest her head on his chest.
As she looked up to him damn! Why is my brother so sexy? No wonder why girls always throw herself at him
She raised up her head to kiss him but shockingly, he responded to her kisses. Making no space between them. As they kiss passionately.
