Chapter 1 — Rejected Before The Entire Pack
The moon hung high above the Dark Fang Pack like a silent witness. Silver light poured over the massive ceremonial grounds, bathing the ancient stone arena in an eerie glow. Hundreds of wolves filled the seats surrounding the platform, their voices rising into excited murmurs as the annual mating ceremony began. For most wolves, tonight was sacred. For Aurora Hale, tonight felt like a death sentence. She stood near the back of the gathering hall with her hands trembling beneath the sleeves of her pale dress. Her heartbeat thundered painfully against her ribs as she watched pack members laugh and celebrate around her. None of them looked at her kindly. None of them ever did. "There she is." Aurora stiffened. A group of she-wolves near the wine table burst into mocking laughter. "The wolfless omega." "I heard Alpha Kael hasn't even looked at her once tonight." "Would you? She's embarrassing." Aurora lowered her gaze immediately. Years ago, those words would have made her cry. Now, they simply hurt in a quieter way. She had grown used to humiliation. Orphaned at ten. Mocked for being weak. Ignored by nearly everyone in the pack. And worst of all She still had not shifted. At twenty years old. Most wolves shifted before eighteen. Some even earlier. But Aurora's wolf remained silent. Because of that, the Dark Fang Pack treated her like a burden. A defect. Something shameful. "Aurora." Her breath caught instantly. She turned toward the deep masculine voice she would recognize anywhere. Kael Ravenwood. The Alpha heir. Tall. Powerful. Feared. Every female in the pack desired him. The torchlight danced across his sharp jawline and dark hair as he approached her through the crowd. His black ceremonial jacket clung tightly to his broad shoulders, making him look every bit the future Alpha of Dark Fang. Aurora's chest tightened painfully. Her mate. The Moon Goddess had revealed the bond to her three months ago. She had not told anyone. Not even Kael. Because she was terrified. Terrified that he would reject her. Yet a small part of her had still hoped. Maybe the mate bond would matter. Maybe he would see her. Maybe tonight would change everything. Kael stopped before her, his cold gray eyes scanning her face. "You're late," he said. "I—I was helping in the kitchens." His expression showed no interest. "Mother is looking for you." Aurora nodded quickly. "Okay." She tried to move past him. But suddenly Pain exploded through her chest. Aurora gasped. The air around her changed instantly. The sounds of the crowd faded. Her pulse raced wildly. Kael froze. His eyes widened slightly. For the first time that night, emotion crossed his face. Recognition. The mate bond. Aurora's breathing became uneven. He felt it too. Moon Goddess… He knew. Around them, nearby wolves noticed the sudden tension. Whispers spread quickly. Kael stared at her for several long seconds. Then his face darkened. "No," he said quietly. Aurora's stomach dropped. "No?" "This isn't possible." The coldness in his voice stabbed deeper than a knife. "Kael…" "You're my mate?" His tone sounded almost offended. Aurora felt her cheeks burn. "I didn't choose this." Several wolves nearby had started staring openly now. The whispers grew louder. "The omega?" "She's his mate?" "That's impossible." Kael's jaw clenched tightly. "I will not accept this bond." Aurora's eyes widened. Her heart cracked instantly. He hadn't even hesitated. Not even for one second. "Kael…" "You are weak." Each word landed like a blow. "You have no wolf. No strength. No status. You would disgrace me as Luna." The crowd had gone silent. Everyone was watching. Aurora could barely breathe. Still, she forced herself to speak. "The mate bond is sacred." "So is the future of this pack." His gaze turned colder. "I deserve a stronger mate." A sharp laugh suddenly echoed through the crowd. Aurora turned toward the sound. Selena Vale stepped forward confidently. Beautiful. Elegant. Cruel. The Beta's daughter wrapped an arm possessively around Kael's. Unlike Aurora, Selena was powerful. Admired. Everything Aurora was not. "Well," Selena said mockingly, "this is awkward." Several wolves laughed nervously. Aurora's humiliation deepened. Kael did not remove Selena's hand. That hurt the most. Then the future Alpha raised his voice for the entire arena to hear. "I, Kael Ravenwood, reject Aurora Hale as my mate." The words shattered through her soul. Agony ripped violently through Aurora's chest. A strangled cry escaped her lips as the mate bond cracked. She stumbled backward. The pain was unbearable. It felt like her heart was being torn apart from the inside. Gasps erupted around the arena. Some wolves looked shocked. Others looked entertained. Selena smirked. Kael's face remained emotionless. Aurora's vision blurred with tears. Humiliation. Pain. Heartbreak. All of it crushed her at once. Yet somehow, the deepest wound came from the fact that he looked relieved. As though rejecting her had solved a problem. "A weak omega could never stand beside an Alpha," Selena said loudly. More laughter spread through the crowd. Aurora's hands shook violently. She wanted to disappear. She wanted the ground to swallow her whole. But before she could escape A terrifying pressure suddenly descended over the arena. The laughter died instantly. Every wolf froze. An overwhelming scent filled the air. Power. Danger. Dominance. Even the strongest wolves lowered their heads instinctively. Aurora's breath caught. Heavy footsteps echoed across the stone entrance. One. Two. Three. Then he appeared. The stranger was impossibly tall. Dressed entirely in black. Silver markings glimmered faintly across the collar of his coat while moonlight illuminated his pale skin and dark hair. His crimson eyes swept across the arena with terrifying calm. The atmosphere changed instantly. Fear spread through the crowd. Real fear. Pack members began bowing their heads one after another. Aurora noticed something shocking. Even Kael stepped back. Alpha Magnus, the leader of Dark Fang, hurried down from the ceremonial platform. The usually proud Alpha lowered his head respectfully. "Your Majesty," he greeted. Aurora's heart nearly stopped. Your Majesty? The stranger was royalty. No. Worse. Much worse. Whispers erupted across the arena. "The Lycan King…" "He's here?" "Why would he visit Dark Fang?" Aurora's blood ran cold. The Lycan King. The ruler feared by every Alpha across the continent. Lucian Draven. Stories about him were whispered among wolves like dark legends. Ruthless. Unbeatable. Merciless. Some claimed he had destroyed entire packs for betrayal. Others claimed he possessed powers blessed directly by the Moon Goddess herself. No one dared challenge him. Lucian's crimson gaze swept slowly across the crowd. Then it stopped. On her. Aurora froze. The entire world seemed to disappear. Those eyes… They were terrifying. Ancient. Predatory. Yet strangely intense. A strange heat spread through Aurora's chest. Her pulse quickened. No. Impossible. The Lycan King began walking toward her. Every step echoed heavily in the silent arena. Kael stiffened immediately. Selena's confidence vanished. Aurora could barely move. Lucian stopped directly before her. For several long seconds, he simply stared. His expression remained unreadable. Then his eyes darkened. Dangerously. "Who rejected her?" he asked quietly. The silence that followed felt deadly. Kael forced himself forward. "I did." Lucian slowly turned his gaze toward him. The pressure in the arena intensified instantly. Kael's face paled. Even Alpha Magnus looked nervous now. Lucian spoke again. "You rejected your fated mate publicly?" Kael swallowed. "She is weak." Aurora lowered her head painfully. Lucian's expression did not change. But the temperature around them seemed to drop. "Weak?" Kael straightened slightly. "She has no wolf. She cannot become Luna." Lucian looked back at Aurora. For the first time in years, someone examined her without disgust. Without pity. His gaze felt sharp enough to cut through every wall she had built around herself. Aurora's breathing became uneven. Then suddenly Lucian reached toward her. The crowd gasped. His fingers tilted her chin upward gently. The touch sent a violent shock through Aurora's body. A strange pull ignited deep inside her chest. Powerful. Ancient. Alive. Lucian's crimson eyes narrowed. The next words that left his mouth changed Aurora's life forever. "She is not weak." Silence. Absolute silence. Then "She belongs to me." Gasps exploded across the arena. Aurora's mind went blank. Kael's face darkened instantly. Selena looked horrified. Alpha Magnus appeared moments away from collapsing. Lucian ignored all of them. His gaze never left Aurora. The strange pull inside her chest intensified violently. No. No, this couldn't be happening. The Lycan King could not possibly be "M-mate…" Aurora whispered unconsciously. Lucian's eyes flashed. The arena erupted into chaos. "She has a second chance mate?" "With the Lycan King?" "That's impossible!" Kael stepped forward immediately. "This must be a mistake." Lucian finally looked at him again. And smiled. It was not a pleasant smile. It was the smile of a predator. "The Moon Goddess does not make mistakes." Kael's fists clenched. Aurora noticed something strange. Regret. For the first time since rejecting her, Kael looked uncertain. Lucian removed his hand from Aurora's chin slowly. "From this moment forward," he declared coldly, "Aurora Hale falls under my protection." The crowd stared in disbelief. "No wolf in this pack will disrespect her again." His voice deepened dangerously. "Or they answer to me." Fear swept visibly across the arena. Aurora could barely process what was happening. Only minutes ago, she had been humiliated before the entire pack. Now the most feared man in the supernatural world was claiming her. None of this felt real. Kael's jaw tightened. "With all respect, Your Majesty, Aurora belongs to Dark Fang." Lucian's crimson eyes sharpened instantly. "No." The single word carried terrifying authority. "She belongs to me." Aurora's heart pounded violently. The possessiveness in his tone shocked her. Lucian stepped closer. "So tell me, little wolf…" His voice lowered enough for only her to hear. "Will you come willingly?" Aurora looked up at him. At the terrifying king whose presence alone silenced entire packs. At the man who had defended her when no one else ever had. At the mate fate had given her after her heart had just been shattered. Fear swirled violently inside her. But beneath the fear… Something else stirred. Something warm. Something dangerous. And for the first time in years Hope. Aurora swallowed hard. Then, slowly… She nodded. The entire arena erupted. Kael's face lost all color. Selena looked furious. And the Lycan King smiled once more. This time, the smile reached his eyes. But instead of comfort, it sent chills down Aurora's spine. Because deep down… She suddenly realized something terrifying. Being claimed by the Lycan King might be far more dangerous than being rejected. And somehow… Much harder to escape.
