I reach out and knock twice on the door. Much to my distaste, Tracy answers it, “Yes?” she asks.
“Hi, my mate is inside, can I come in?” I asked.
She narrowed her eyes at me, “I’ve met you before,” she started, “I can’t quite place you though.
“I was a surrender from a few months ago, we met in passing while I was walking to my temporary room,” I said sweetly, not wanting her to remember what happened the first day I had gotten here.
“Of course, the Alphas’ and I will be down in -,” Tracy was cut off as the door was yanked open and a 7-foot 8 man came into view. He has bronzed skin, a square jaw and his shoulder length brown hair made him look dangerous. He has a faded scar that began above his left eyebrow and traveled diagonally, across his face, until it was hidden by his beard. His overwhelming scent reached me, and I knew, this was my SECOND mate.
Maze, why do we have two mates? I asked her.
We have 7 mates. She said like it was no big deal.
SEVEN?!
Yes, once you choose one, and we are marked the connection with the other 6 will be severed. They’ll be able to move on with whomever they want. And with this harpy hanging with our first mate, who’s also a bit of a…. well, I’m sure you can use your imagination, this mate should be chosen by us. Besides, he’s the Lycan King!
“MINE!” the Lycan King snarled as I stared at him. He pushed Tracy out of the doorway as he snaked one of his long arms around my waist and pulled me to him, my head on his chest. This was a HUGE Lycan!
“MINE!” I heard Zayden growl.
I was pulled into the room by the Lycan King, carefully keeping his harms around my waist, he turned so I wasn’t in view of Zayden as he bared his teeth, growling a warning.
Maze, also, decided to come forward, with no warning, only to growl at the Alpha King. She then leaned into the Lycan King, taking in his scent as she breathed, “Mine,” into his shirt. She was content. This is who Maze wanted, or would she want one of the other 5 apparent mates we have?
This is him! This is him! This is the one I want! My other half is his Lycan!
Your other half is a Lycan? I questioned.
That’s why we have 7 mates, each one was selected by Bane. Except, Bane doesn’t choose his human until they prove themselves. They have to prove themselves worthy of me, prove to be as strong, or stronger. Bane also has 7 mates. We may have a fight on our hands if we aren’t the first to find him.
Great, why didn’t you tell me this earlier? I asked her, as she gave me control back so she could reconnect with her long-lost lover. A second hand snaked around my waist, and I was roughly pulled from the Lycan King, crashing into another chest.
“I’m sorry Lycan King, this is MY mate,” Zayden said. I looked to Zayden with a blank look on my face. His scent was still intoxicating, but the bond we had with him was almost gone. Broken on the day he marked another.
The Lycan King looked at the Alpha King and bit out, “She is MINE wolf.” He reached for me and pulled me back to his arms. The two men continued this banter until I got tired of it, and said, “I am a person! Stop treating me like a toy!” and stormed out of the office. Both males were on my heals as I quickly went back to ballroom entrance.
“Please wait,” my Lycan mate pleaded as he caught up to me, quickly grabbing my waist. I turned to look at him, “Let me escort you.” he finished.
I turned to look at the Lycan, “What is your name?”
He smiled gently, “Ragnar, what is yours?”
“Carmen.”
Ragnar quickly closed the space between us, reaching for my hand before placing a kiss on the back of it.
“I am honored to meet you. Will you do me the honor and dance with me?”
“Yes,” I said, blushing.
Ragnar held his arm out for me to take as we walked into the ballroom to join the many couples dancing.
“Ragnar! I’ve been waiting for you,” said an approaching woman. She has shoulder length black hair, with a tight red cocktail dress on, bright red lipstick, and of course perfectly manicured hands.
“Christine, this is my mate, Carmen. Carmen, this is Christine, my sister,” Ragnar introduced.
“Mate! Oh, where have you been? This one has been moping around thinking he’d never find you! He’s searched everywhere! Wait, you smell off,” Christine said as she took another sniff in my direction.
“You smell like you’re already marked,” she concluded.
Crap! I forgot Zayden already marked us!
“Yes, Zayden marked me the first day we met. After, I found him marking another. He informed me that he marks all the females he thinks are his. I rejected him on the spot,” I explained.
“Oh, well, that’s interesting. If he’s marking every she-wolf he claims, Ragnar, isn’t that breaking the law?” Christine asked sweetly.
“Why, yes, my dear sister. It is,” he replied.
Okay, this is weird. It’s like they were joking, using weird accents as they discussed this conundrum.
“Are you guys joking about this, or are you being serious?” I asked.
“Oh, we’re dead serious, but like to add our own twist when we find things out about packs. This could come in handy if Zayden steps out of line,” Christine explained.
“Gotcha,” I said absentmindedly. Christine and Ragnar continued to talk as I observed what was going on around us. There were many people watching us and waiting for their chance to pounce on the King. I could see Maddie giving me a death glare. I smirked in her direction, which set her off. She stomped towards us, and that’s when I realized that Christine and Ragnar were gone. Oh, crap.
“Think you’re better than me because the Lycan King pities you?” she demanded.
“Oh, he doesn’t pity me. You will see what he wants with me,” I replied with a knowing smile.
Maze, you’re sure the king’s wolf is your mate? I asked her.
Yes, and I think it’s time to undo what I did, don’t you? Maze asked in a not so sweet voice.
What if the king decides – SLAP, my cheek turning red as it burned.
“OH, HELL NO!!!” Maze yelled. The entire atmosphere shifted as Maze oozed her aura, causing Maddie to fall to her knees. All eyes were on us now, “YOU WILL NOT DISRESPECT ME,” my voice was not raised but it boomed throughout the room, nonetheless.
The Alphas’ chose that moment to come over to us. Ragnar with a knowing look and Zayden with a confused look.
“You WILL learn RESPECT, pup. Carmen, which element shall we use?” Maze asked.
“Element?” someone asked, followed by murmurs as the gathering crowd tried to figure out what she was talking about.
Maybe a fireball? See if it rings any bells? I asked.
You must have read my thoughts, Maze answered me.
“Fire it is,” Maze announced. Maddie was still on her knees, and she began whimpering when she couldn’t overcome my aura.
Maze conjured up a fireball and held it in her hand. Maddie’s eyes widened as she realized what Maze was talking about. The ballroom was silent except for the crackling of the fire in our hand.
“Now, for slapping us, you will bear a mark like no other, showing how you disrespected Carmen and I. Your mate will know what you did, everyone will know what you did,” Maze spat.
Zayden chose that time to say, “Maze, you’re forbidden to use your elemental powers to harm my pack members!”
“Impudent creature!” Ragnar bellowed as he put himself between Zayden and us, “You will NOT command your Lycan Queen, you will respect her!”
Just as Maze began pressing the fireball to Maddie’s right cheek, chaos erupted, “ROGUES!” someone yelled.
Maze immediately whipped around, “BANE!” she called to her mate.
As Ragnar’s wolf took over, I could see his eyes were blood red, the rogues pushed their way into the ballroom looking for something or someone, killing anyone who got in their way.
Maze used the elements to surround the rogues in fire, keeping them in with wind.
I cannot keep this up, I’ll kill you, we’ve already used too much, she told me.
I’ve asked you for YEARS to teach me! It is time I learn, Maze, I told her.
I agree, we will begin training as soon as we’re home with our mate, she replied.
Maze stopped using the elements to contain the rogues and retreated to recover.
“What are you doing here?” I asked.
“We are looking for our Queen,” a young man, with sharp features said.
“Your queen?” I asked.
“Yes, she’s been scented here by the Rogue King,” he answered.
“And where is your king?” spat Bane.
“He tracked her here. He is looking for her. He wants her. He will kill anyone who doesn’t give him to her,” the rogue said as a mountain of a man walked into the room. He scanned the room as he inhaled, until he stopped on me.
“MATE!” he growled. I looked at Bane in disgust, this man was a giant, and ugly! He could have easily passed as an ogre (if they were real, of course).
Bane’s eyes softened a little as I grabbed his arm, not wanting to deal with another possible mate trying to claim me.
“She is MINE!” Bane growled back, taking a step forward.
“I challenge you pup,” the man said.
“I accept,” Bane responded as he began escorting me outside.
This should be interesting, Maze commented as we walked towards the battle grounds.
