THE ALPHA WHO WATCHED ME
CHAPTER THIRTY: THE CROWN THAT DEMANDED MY HEART
“Choose, Elena Silvercrest.”
The voice echoed through the chamber.
Darius knelt before the throne, his body surrounded by silver light. The broken-chain symbol on his wrist had spread across his forearm, and I could see the struggle in his face as he fought to remain himself.
The throne wanted me to choose.
Save Darius.
Or save the kingdom.
I looked at the black book in Isabelle's hands.
“There must be another way.”
Isabelle searched the pages frantically.
“I'm looking!”
My mother moved toward us.
“Elena, listen to me. The oath was created to preserve the balance between the guardian and the heirs. If you surrender your inheritance, the throne may release Darius.”
“May?”
Seraphina's face tightened.
“I cannot promise what will happen.”
I almost laughed.
Nobody could promise me anything.
My entire life had been shaped by people who believed they knew what was best for me. They had made choices in my name, hidden my identity, and decided which truths I was allowed to hear.
Now an ancient throne was demanding that I make the same kind of decision.
I looked at Darius.
His eyes met mine.
“Don't do it,” he whispered.
“Don't do what?”
“Don't surrender your inheritance for me.”
“Why?”
“Because your family has already sacrificed too much.”
“And you haven't?”
His expression broke.
“Elena, I don't want to become another reason you lose everything.”
I took his hand.
“You are not making this decision for me.”
“I know.”
“Then let me choose.”
He swallowed hard.
For a moment, he looked as though he wanted to argue. Then he nodded.
It was a small gesture, but it mattered.
He was finally allowing me to make a decision without trying to control the outcome.
I turned toward the throne.
“I refuse.”
The chamber shook.
The voice became louder.
“THE HEIR MUST CHOOSE.”
“I have chosen.”
“THE GUARDIAN OR THE CROWN.”
I lifted my chin.
“Neither.”
Silence followed.
Then the throne erupted in silver light.
The force threw everyone backward. I struck the floor beside Isabelle, and the black book slid from her hands.
The two figures representing Darius's father began moving toward the throne.
Aldric struggled to stand.
“You cannot refuse the choice!”
“Why not?” I shouted.
“Because the oath requires a sacrifice!”
“Then the oath is wrong!”
The words seemed to echo beyond the chamber.
The silver light flickered.
I felt something shift beneath my feet.
For a moment, I thought I had imagined it.
Then the throne spoke again.
“THE OATH CANNOT BE BROKEN.”
“Everything created can be changed.”
The words came from my mother.
She stepped forward, her silver eyes shining.
“The oath was written by people who believed fear was the only way to preserve peace. They were wrong.”
Lucian joined her.
“We have spent generations obeying a system that has destroyed our families. If the only way to save the kingdom is to sacrifice another innocent person, then the kingdom must change.”
Aldric looked at them.
“You would risk every territory?”
“I would risk the old order,” Lucian replied. “Not the people who live beneath it.”
Isabelle picked up the black book.
“There's another passage.”
She turned several pages.
“The guardian may refuse the crown. The heir may refuse the inheritance. But the oath cannot be destroyed unless both heirs speak the final words together.”
My mother hurried toward her.
“What words?”
Isabelle read the inscription aloud.
“What was divided by fear must be reunited by choice. What was bound by power must be released by truth.”
The symbols on the floor began glowing.
Aldric looked stunned.
“The original release.”
“Then tell us what to do,” I said.
He hesitated.
“To break the oath, both heirs must stand before the throne and speak the words. But the guardian must willingly release his bond.”
I looked at Darius.
He was still kneeling.
The silver light had spread to his shoulder.
“Can you hear me?”
“Yes.”
“Can you release the bond?”
He shook his head.
“Not while the oath controls my wolf.”
“Then we will help you.”
I turned toward Isabelle.
She nodded.
We moved toward the throne together.
The moment we stepped into the silver circle, the floor began vibrating. My crescent mark glowed, and Isabelle's stars answered.
The two symbols connected.
A narrow path of light formed between us.
Darius struggled to rise.
The two figures of his father blocked his way.
“You cannot abandon your duty,” one said.
“You cannot betray your blood,” said the other.
Darius lifted his head.
“I am not betraying my family.”
He forced himself to stand.
“I am refusing to repeat its mistakes.”
The broken-chain symbol on his wrist began to c***k.
His father stepped forward.
“You will lose everything.”
Darius looked at me.
“Then I will lose it honestly.”
He reached for the silver ring in his palm.
The moment he lifted it, the chain around his wrist shattered.
The sound was like a thousand piece
