Chapter 1: Hell On Earth
“Mirabella Davidson! I am going to kill you,” My mother’s voice made me shiver with fear, and a cup fell from my hands, but thank god it didn’t break. I looked towards the door where she was present.
“What the hell did you do to my dress?” She threw her dress on my face, and I quickly caught it before it hit the ground.
“W-what happened, Mom?” I asked, and she sneered while looking at my face.
“Don’t you dare pretend like you know nothing about my dress. How can you burn such an expensive dress?” I looked at the dress and quickly noticed the black spot. Someone burnt it with an iron, and I knew who that someone was, but I didn’t dare to open my mouth at all.
“A pig like you will never be able to wear such a beautiful dress, so you did this to mine, right?” She asked, and before I could come up with an excuse, she grabbed my arm and started dragging me towards the basement. My eyes widened with fear.
“N-no, Mom! Please nooo!!! I swear, I didn’t mess with your dress. Maybe it was Samantha,” I finally spilled out, and a hard slap landed on my face. I fell on my butt and looked at her face with shock.
“How dare you? A filth like you has no right to blame my innocent daughter at all,” She warned me with a pointed finger when her witchy daughter, Samantha, came out of her room.
“Mom! When will she stop lying about me? What if Dad came and heard all this? Will he blame us and kick us out of this house?” She faked worry, and after hearing her words, I knew what was coming for me. I tried to cover my body, but she wasn’t ready to leave me any time soon. She started cursing me, kicking me, and punching me at the same time.
“Your mother shouldn’t have left you with us. You ruined our lives, you f*cking b*tch. I know what you want, but I will never let that happen,” She was cursing me loudly while I was trying to save myself as always.
My mother, Sienna Davidson, left my dad when I was young, so my dad got married after finding a second chance mate, Gina Davidson. Both of them have two children, Riley and Samantha. My twin brother and I started depending on each other when Gina started treating us like trash, but she and her daughters were hell-bent on making our lives worse with each passing day.
“Let me put you in your place,” She said and grabbed a handful of my hair. I cried with pain, and another slap landed on my face. She dragged me to the basement, and I started begging her to stop, but she didn’t. She threw me inside the dark basement and locked the door behind me.
“Please, Mom!!! I am sorry. Please don’t put me here. I swear, I will never do anything like this again,” I begged her loudly while banging on the door, but nothing happened.
“Please, Mom! I am so scared of the basement and closed places.” My voice wasn’t above a whisper, and I was sitting in a corner while my body shrank with fear. I looked around and felt like I couldn’t breathe. I tried to remember all the happy moments that I spent with my brother.
“I will be alright! My brother is with me. I am doing this all for him,” I tried to remember myself for the nth time.
“Brother! I will save you soon. I will never let anything happen to you,” I said while closing my eyes. Tears were rolling down my cheeks, and I tried to recall the mistakes that I had made in the past to deserve such a miserable life.
Alaric was diagnosed with blood cancer two months ago, and all the therapies were taking a toll on his health. He lost several pounds in a couple of days and started looking like a skeleton. Father had to hospitalize him last month, but he wasn’t willing to pay for him anymore. I wasn’t ready to give up on him, so I decided to step up and make a deal with him. I will take a job and do all the house chores for them for free, so he has to pay Alaric’s medical bills. He was reluctant at first, but then agreed. Since then, Samantha, Riley, and their mom, Gina, made it their mission to make my life a living hell.
But I wasn’t willing to let it stop me. I have to save Alaric at any cost… even at the cost of my safety and health. All this hectic work started making me look like a sick person, but I was willing to endure everything for my brother.
“I will be alright soon. Soon this torture will end, and I will leave this pack with my brother,” I hugged myself and started talking to myself. A shiver of fear ran down my spine when I looked at the closed door, and the darkness surrounded me.
“It will be alright. Everything will be fine,” I started whispering to myself when I heard the footsteps coming towards the door.
Maybe the Moon Goddess decided to have a bit of mercy on me by putting a soft corner in my stepmother’s heart. I looked at the door when the keys jingled, and she kicked open the door with a sour expression etched on her face. I blinked a few times to make sure it wasn’t just my imagination.
“Hey, brat! Your dad called me and informed me that Alaric’s medical bills are becoming too much for him to pay, so…” My heart dropped after hearing her words.
“P-please, mother! Please don’t do this with him. He needs this therapy otherwise, he will not be able to heal,” She looked at me like she didn’t give a rat’s ass to all my pleading.
“I already heard this broken record of yours several times. I am not interested in it, but your father is waiting for you on the phone,” I quickly got up after wiping my tears with the back of my hand when I was about to go out. She grabbed my wrist.
“No need to tell your father about this punishment of yours; otherwise, you have to prepare yourself to attend Alaric’s funeral… Am I clear?” I quickly nodded and almost ran towards the lounge where her cell phone was present. I took a deep breath, calmed my breathing, and then forced a smile on my face.
“Hey, Dad! When are you coming back? Will you celebrate this Christmas with us?” I asked in a single breath, like usual.
“Hi, Mia! And no, I will not be able to come back home during the Christmas break, either, but I have some good news and some bad news for you,” He said, and my heart skipped a beat in fear.
“What is it that?” Despite my fear, my tone was calm… too calm.
“Alaric is showing good progress, and the doctors are really hopeful about his situation.” I felt like I just imagined her words; my heart danced in joy and gratitude.
“This is great, Dad. What’s the bad news?” I asked and held my breath.
“Alaric’s medicines are really expensive, and all his treatments are difficult to manage,” He answered, and I was on the verge of breaking down in tears and begged him to continue my brother's medical expenses.
“So?” I asked when he didn’t utter a single word.
“So, the CEO of our company needs a full-time caretaker, and they are willing to bear all the medical expenses of Alaric’s treatments in exchange. Also, they will provide the necessities, and you can also continue your education in their pack,” He finished, and my mouth hung open.
I wasn’t expecting this at all, so it took me a minute to wrap my head around his offer.
“If you want to continue your brother’s treatment, then this is the best opportunity you will find, Mirabella. What do you think about it?” He asked, and my mind started calculating all the pros and cons of the offer.
I will be able to live away from this house, and my mother’s wrath, and the job will pay for Alaric’s treatment. But he will also permit me to continue my education.
“Are you sure, Dad? It seems like a scam to me,” I asked, and he chuckled.
“Yes, it is, but you know what… these rich people are really loaded and love to spend their money. What do you think about it then? I have checked everything myself, and trust me, you will not regret it,” He assured me, and I thought about my situation.
‘I really didn’t have any other option than to say yes to him. I can’t let him discontinue my brother’s treatment, so I took a deep breath before answering him.
“Yes, Dad! I am willing to work for them, but you didn’t tell me the time period of this job?” I asked.
“Two years, Mirabella,” I inhaled a sharp breath, but I couldn’t say no to this offer at any cost.
“I am willing, Dad!” I answered in a plain tone.
“Okay! I will pick you up tomorrow. You have to be in their house before Christmas day,” I hummed in response, and ended the call after hearing his instructions. My stepmother sneered at me before leaving me alone in the lounge. I guess she will not lock me in the basement tonight. I quickly headed towards my attic and started gathering my clothes before packing them.
“Alaric! Don’t worry, we will not let anything happen to you at all,” I thought, and a smile crept onto my face. I quickly finished packing and fell on my mattress with exhaustion.
She had no idea the job offer wasn’t really a job but a contract to sell her out.
