I was unsure if I had heard correctly, but by the look on Harper’s face, it was clear I had. What the f*ck was she talking about? I wondered, but refrained from voicing my thoughts. I hoped she would explain herself, but then I realized she had gone into shock. I walked over to her, putting my hand on her shoulder and turning her to face me.
“Hey, sweetness, what’s going on?” I inquired. “Why would you even think that?”
Tears started to form in her eyes, and it worried me. I thought we had already talked about her parents, but clearly, we had missed something.
“Harper?” I called out, shaking her gently. “What’s going on?”
