Chapter One.
Lucerne William woke up that morning, feeling super sentimental. She was happy,no, not happy, the word was fulfilled. But at the same time, that day marked ten years after the incident. She vividly remembered the day she and her brother lost their parents in a car accident. She wiped off a tear that rolled down her eyes. She stood up from the bed and looked at the picture that stood on the table in her bedroom. “Lucy! Are you awake?” She heard her Aunt Louise call her out her name. “Yes,Aunt Louise. I am awake. I was just coming down for breakfast.” Lucerne said as she opened the door and met with the bright green eyes of her brother and the warm brown ones of her Aunt. “Sis,are you alright?” Her brother,Leroi asked and she smiled at her nineteen year-old brother. “I am okay,Leroi. Did you sleep well?” She asked, rubbing her brother’s head. “Good morning,Aunt.” She greeted him and Aunt Louise smiled warmly at her. “Are you okay,Lucy dear? How was your night?” Louise asked and Lucy returned the smile. “I'm okay. I had a super nice sleep. And did I tell you that I feel super good, knowing that I have to go back and forth with part-time jobs? It's been a week since I resumed work at Zellie Cosmetics and I feel super fulfilled,so I’m okay.''She said, looking from her brother’s face to her Aunt’s face. “Were you worried that I would be crying my eyes out, since its Dad and Mom’s death anniversary?” She asked and Leroi looked at her,his eyes glistening with unshed tears. Struggling to hold her tears, she smiled weakly at her brother. “We are going to be okay,Leroi. Mom and Dad are gonna be looking down on us and they would be extremely proud at how far we have come, without letting our situation get the better of us. So we simply need to keep moving on and making them proud.” Lucerne said to her brother and she faced her Aunt Louise. “Aunt, for the past fifteen years, you have been taking care of us without any complaint. We owe you a lot,and even though we might not say it and though Leroi might be mule-headed sometimes,we love you a lot. And that’s what matters. Okay?” She said to her Aunt and Louise swallowed the tears that were in her eyes and smiled. “Oooooo, someone’s grown up. I love you both too,Lucerne and Leroi. Oh,come here,my little honeys.” She said and Lucerne and Leroi exchanged mock agitated glances. “Oh no,here comes the typhoon hug.” Leroi whispered as Aunt Louie swept them both into a tight bear hug. Lucerne giggled as she remained in her aunt’s embrace and the memory of the last hug her father and mother had given her before the accident, slipped into her mind. She sighed and gripped her aunt’s shirt, willing herself not to cry. “Well then, now that we are okay,I need not remind you that Leroi’s doctor's appointment is tomorrow. I almost forgot to remind you.Nothing should keep you at work late tomorrow, okay?” Louise said and Lucy nodded “Got it. Now,what do we have for breakfast, cause i don’t know about you both, but I am starving.” Lucy said with a dramatised act, and Louise and Leroi burst into laughter. “Well,Bacons and fried eggs with a cup of tea.I prepared lunch for you both too,so have breakfast and get to work.” Louise said, shooing her niece and nephew towards the dining room. The house, though small, was just enough to house the three of them. Lucerne had her own room, the same as Louise and Leroi, though all the rooms were small. “The breakfast was wonderful. Thanks Aunt.” Lucerne said and hurried to her room. She changed from the nightwear she had on into a bathrobe and rushed into the bathroom, before Leroi could take up the space. You see,Leroi had a thing for taking extra time in the shower and that would cause a delay for Lucerne and she couldn’t afford that. She quickly took a bath and entered her room. She opened her closet and picked out the outfit she had planned to wear the night before; a black pencilled knee-length skirt and a short sleeved lace white shirt. She hurriedly threw on her underwear, a singlet and then put on the outfit. She picked out one of the three office shoes she had,and put them on; black block-heeled strappy heels, and picked up her phone and bag. She looked at the mirror and put on lip gloss and brushed her hair and packed it in a neat ponytail, neatly leaving her fringes to fall slightly over her face. She walked out of the room and to the door. “Aunt,I’m leaving.” She yelled and Louise walked quickly to catch up with her. “Lucerne, your lunch.” She said and Lucerne turned and smiled gratefully at her. “Thanks Aunt.” She said and flagged down a taxi. “Zellie cosmetics, please.” She said to the driver.
Lunch time had arrived and it was all Lucerne had wanted ever since she had arrived at work that morning. Her supervisor was being unnecessarily grumpy, and her brother had texted to let her know that he was feeling some weird pain in his heart area. Lucerne sighed immediately, knowing that her brother would need to have a heart transplant soon, but she didn’t know where she would get such money from. Her brother had a congenital heart disease and because he couldn’t afford to get a new heart,he constantly had surgery to put on a stunt that would make the heart work for a couple of years. But the disease was getting worse by the day and knowing that their parents had left little inheritance for them and she couldn’t afford to bother Aunt Louise,Lucerne, who had felt super optimistic in the morning, felt like her world was crashing down. Lunch. To eat was all she needed. She picked the lunch her aunt had prepared for her, grateful that she wouldn’t need to spend money on lunch, and hurriedly went downstairs to meet her best friends,Stephen and Coral. “Hey,Lucy.Darn girl, you look tense. Is anything the matter?” Coal asked as Lucy approached them both and Lucy collapsed on the chair in front of them. “Nothing. Miss Deirdre is being unnecessarily difficult today, and she seems to be taking her frustrations out on me. As if I haven’t got my own problem.” Lucy said, taking out her food flask. She opened it up and saw that her aunt had prepared rice with chicken sauce, with pieces of chicken and it served as a means to cheer her up. “Cheer up,we soon will no longer be interns, and they will have no reason to bully us.” Stephen said and with that, all three friends began to dig into their food, chattering away.
“Who is Miss Lucerne Williams?” Lucerne heard someone say from the door that led to her departmental office and she looked up. “That would be me.” She said and studied the face of the person who had asked of her. “ The boss,Mr Liam Windsor, would like to see you right this instant.” He said and she looked at him. “Me?” She asked wanting to be sure. “Yes. You.” He said and she stood up and followed the man. She wondered what she had done wrong for the boss to know by name and even sent for her. The boss,Liam Windsor, was an extremely hard and well-respected man. She had every right to worry,as everyone knew him to be one of the most feared men in town. As they approached the CEO’s door, the young man she had been following turned and looked at her. “Might I inform you,so that you do not get startled, that the boss wants from you is a marriage contract.” He said and Lucerne's eyes widened. “Pardon?” She said, with narrowed eyes.
