Chapter 12

One Month Later... The morning sun filtered through the massive glass windows of the estate, but Aurora didn’t spare it a glance. She stood in the bathroom of her luxurious bedroom, her hands shaking so violently she could barely hold the small plastic stick in her hand. She stared down at it. Two solid, dark pink lines stared back. Positive. Aurora’s breath caught in her throat, a cold wave of shock washing over her. She sank onto the edge of the marble bathtub, her hand instinctively pressing against her flat stomach. It was impossible. She had been so careful, so guarded. But the memories of that wild, stormy night three weeks ago—when Adrian’s furious passion had broken through all her defenses, and she had finally matched his fire with her own—came rushing back. She wasn't pregnant with her ex-husband's child. She had been separated from Damian for over a month. This baby, as the sudden, overwhelming bouts of morning sickness had violently hinted—belonged to her brother-in-law. To Adrian. "Aurora?" A sharp knock on the bathroom door made her jump. Adrian’s deep, possessive voice echoed through the wood, sending a bolt of panic straight to her heart. "Are you alright in there? You’ve been inside for an hour," he demanded, his hand rattling the doorknob. Even after a month, he still monitored her every move. He was still the warden of her beautiful, suffocating cage. "I'm fine!" she called out, her voice cracking. She desperately threw the pregnancy test into the trash, burying it deep under some tissues. "I'm just taking a shower!" "Hurry up. I had the chef prepare breakfast. We're eating together today," he said, his footsteps slowly receding. Aurora leaned her head against her knees, tears spilling over her lashes. If Adrian found out she was pregnant, she would never, ever leave this house. His obsession with her was already borderline madness; if he knew she carried his heir, he would chain her to the bed itself to keep her safe. She would become his ultimate captive, and her child would grow up in the shadow of his terrifying, suffocating control. She had to escape. Now. Before she started showing. Before he noticed. For the past month, while pretending to fight him, Aurora had secretly been studying the estate's security routine. She had noticed that every Thursday at 3:00 AM, the local grocery delivery truck arrived to drop off fresh organic produce, and the security guards at the rear gate took a five-minute shift rotation. It was a tiny, risky window. But it was her only shot. That Night — 3:15 AM The rain poured in torrents, masking the sound of Aurora’s footsteps as she slipped through the dark hallways. She wore a simple black raincoat, carrying nothing but a small backpack with her mother's old photos, her journals, and a thick stack of cash she had slowly managed to steal from Adrian’s study desk over the past month. She slipped through the kitchen’s side door, holding her breath as she ran toward the loading dock. The large, refrigerated delivery truck was idling, its driver inside the security kiosk signing paperwork. Aurora didn't hesitate. She scrambled into the back of the truck, squeezing herself behind a massive stack of wooden crates, shivering from both the cold and the sheer terror of being caught. A minute later, the truck doors slammed shut, plunging her into pitch-black darkness. The engine roared, and the vehicle began to move. When the truck finally stopped at a warehouse on the outskirts of the city hours later, Aurora slipped out of the back unnoticed. She ran straight to the nearest bus station, buying a ticket under a fake name to a small, remote coastal town thousands of miles away. She was free. Two Days Later "What do you mean, she is gone?!" Adrian's voice was a terrifying, guttural roar that shook the very foundations of the estate. He stood in the center of Aurora’s bedroom, his chest heaving, his face pale with a mixture of absolute rage and raw, suffocating panic. His head of security stood before him, trembling, his eyes fixed on the floor. "Sir... she must have slipped into the back of the delivery truck during the 3:00 AM guard rotation. We tracked the truck, but she had already fled the warehouse. She took no phone, no credit cards. She left everything." Adrian grabbed the heavy crystal decanter from the vanity and hurled it against the wall. It shattered into a thousand glittering shards, amber liquid dripping down the wallpaper like blood. "Find her!" Adrian screamed, grabbing the security chief by the collar of his suit, his dark eyes completely bloodshot, looking like a man who had completely lost his mind. "I don't care what it costs! Hire every private investigator in the country! Tap every phone, search every train station, every airport, every small town! If she is on this earth, you bring her back to me!" "Yes, Mr. Ashford!" the man gasped, rushing out of the room. Adrian fell to his knees beside the empty bed, his hands clutching the black silk sheets that still smelled of her rose perfume. He buried his face in the fabric, a harsh, ragged sob escaping his throat. She had escaped him. His beautiful, defiant bird had flown away. "I will find you, Aurora," Adrian whispered into the empty room, his voice shaking with a dark, terrifying vow. "I will turn this entire world upside down. I will spend every dime I have. But you will come back to me. You belong to me." Five Years Later... The bustling terminal of the city's international airport was loud, filled with travelers rushing to their gates. Aurora walked through the crowd, her head held high, wearing a sleek beige trench coat and dark sunglasses. She looked completely different from the fragile, frightened girl who had fled this city five years ago. She was confident, poised, and strikingly beautiful. Walking tightly on either side of her were two small, four-year-old boys. They wore matching dark blue jackets. As one of them looked up at the flight information board, his sharp, intelligent dark eyes and perfectly sculpted jawline made several passersby turn and stare. The twins, Leo and Liam, were the spitting image of their father. They had inherited Adrian’s pitch-black eyes, his stubborn, defiant jaw, and even his quiet, intensely observant nature. Every time she looked at them, she saw the man she had run from. For five years, she had hidden in a quiet, coastal town in Europe, raising her sons in peace, far away from the Ashford family drama. But her father’s health was failing, and she couldn't stay away any longer. She had to return. "Mommy," Liam, the quieter of the two, muttered, tugging on her coat. "Are we going to see Grandpa now?" "Yes, sweetie," Aurora said, kneeling down to adjust his collar, a soft, loving smile on her face. "We are going straight to his house." "Is it safe here?" Leo asked, his eyes scanning the airport with a sharp, protective gaze that sent a shiver of familiarity down Aurora’s spine. He looked so much like Adrian it was almost haunting. "It's safe," Aurora promised, though her own heart was hammering against her ribs. She stood up, holding both of her sons' hands tightly in her own. She knew the risks of coming back. She knew that Adrian had spent the last five years tearing the world apart, spending millions of dollars to search for her. She knew he had never stopped looking. But she wasn't the weak girl he had locked in his study anymore. She was a mother, and she would do whatever it took to protect her boys—even if it meant facing the monster who still owned her heart. As they walked toward the exit doors of the airport, a black luxury SUV with tinted windows pulled up to the curb. The door opened, and a tall man in a flawless three-piece black suit stepped out, his dark eyes instantly scanning the crowd.
