Chapter 13

Aurora froze. Her fingers tightened instinctively around the small, warm hands of Leo and Liam. Her heart stopped, hammering a frantic, echoing rhythm against her ribs as she stared at the tall man stepping out of the black SUV. For one agonizing second, her breath caught in her throat. She thought the day of reckoning had arrived before she had even taken a step outside the terminal. She thought he had found her. But as the man stepped fully into the bright afternoon light, Aurora let out a shaky, quiet breath. It wasn’t Adrian. It was Marcus, Adrian’s personal assistant and chief of staff—the only man Adrian trusted with his deepest, darkest corporate secrets. He looked older now, the stress of the last five years carving deep lines around his eyes and silvering his temples. He scanned the crowded terminal, his gaze skipping past several families before locking directly onto Aurora’s face. Marcus didn't look shocked. He looked completely, utterly relieved, as if a massive weight had just been lifted off his shoulders. He walked toward her with quick, hurried strides, stopping just a few feet away. His eyes immediately dropped to the two little boys standing on either side of her. The moment he saw their faces—the identical, piercing black eyes, the sharp, stubborn little jaws, and the unruly dark hair—Marcus’s breath hitched. His chest rose and fell rapidly, and he looked like he had just seen two living ghosts. "Mrs. Ashford," Marcus whispered, his voice cracking with an emotion he quickly tried to hide. He corrected himself immediately. "Or... Aurora. You're finally back." "Marcus," Aurora said, keeping her voice completely flat and guarded. She stepped slightly in front of her sons, shielding them from his direct, searching gaze. "How did you know I was landing today?" "Adrian has had a digital flag on your father's medical files and your passport name for five years," Marcus said quietly, keeping his hands visible to show he wasn't a threat. "The moment your flight was booked under your maiden name, the system alerted my private office. Adrian doesn't know yet. He was in a board meeting across town, so I intercepted the alert to come get you myself before things got... chaotic." Marcus looked down at the twins again, unable to tear his eyes away. Leo was staring back at him with a cold, unblinking intensity, his tiny arms crossed over his chest. It was an expression so identical to Adrian's default business look that it was almost terrifying. "They... they look exactly like him," Marcus breathed, his voice filled with absolute awe. "He has no idea, Aurora. He has spent five years turning the world upside down, spending millions of dollars, believing he lost you forever. If he finds out about them—" "He isn't going to find out," Aurora interrupted, her voice sharp, firm, and completely cutting him off. She looked Marcus dead in the eye, her posture rigid and unyielding. "I came back for my father. He is in the hospital, and I am going to see him. If you try to stop me, or if you call Adrian right now, I will take my sons, walk back into that terminal, and vanish again. And this time, I will make sure none of you ever find us." Marcus swallowed hard. He knew she meant every single word. The fragile, quiet girl who used to shrink under Damian's insults and Adrian's suffocating shadow was completely gone. In her place stood a fierce, protective lioness who would tear the world apart for her cubs. "I won't call him," Marcus promised, stepping back and opening the rear door of the SUV. "But you can't stay in a public hotel, Aurora. Adrian’s security network covers every luxury building and rental agency in this city. If you check in anywhere under any name, his facial recognition systems will flag it within ten minutes. Let me drive you to your father’s hospital. From there, we will figure out a safe place for you and the boys to stay." Aurora hesitated. Her eyes darted around the busy airport terminal, spotting the security cameras overhead. She knew Marcus was right. Adrian’s power and wealth had only grown exponentially over the last five years; he practically owned the city's digital grid. Standing out in the open with two children who looked exactly like him was a massive, dangerous risk. "Fine," Aurora said, her voice tight. "But no detours. Straight to the hospital." She guided the twins into the back seat of the luxury vehicle. Leo and Liam scrambled onto the plush leather seats, looking around the expensive, tinted interior with curious but quiet eyes. Aurora climbed in after them, pulling the door shut with a heavy thud that seemed to lock out the rest of the world. The SUV pulled away from the curb, merging smoothly into the highway traffic. As they drove, Aurora looked out the window at the familiar skyline of the city she had fled in the dead of night five years ago. Nothing had changed, yet everything had. She looked down at her lap, her fingers tracing the fabric of her coat. "How is he?" she asked quietly, not looking at Marcus in the rearview mirror. Marcus knew she didn't mean her father. "He's... different, Aurora," Marcus said softly, his eyes meeting hers in the mirror. "After you left, he became a ghost. He doesn't go to social events. He doesn't smile. He runs his companies with a cold, brutal efficiency that has made him the most feared businessman in the country. But his private life is entirely empty. He spent the first three years traveling constantly, personally leading the search for you. When that failed, he turned his estate into a fortress. He lives there alone. He still has all your things exactly where you left them." A heavy, suffocating lump formed in Aurora’s throat. She looked at her sons, who were currently whispering to each other, completely oblivious to the storm raging around them. "He has to stay away from us, Marcus," Aurora whispered, her voice shaking slightly. "I won't let him lock me up again. And I won't let him control my children." "He won't lock you up, Aurora," Marcus said, though his voice lacked complete certainty. "But Adrian is a man who cannot survive without you. If he sees these boys... if he realizes what you took from him when you ran... he will not let you go. You know that." "Then we will just have to make sure he never sees them," she said, her jaw tightening. Twenty minutes later, the SUV pulled up to the private entrance of the city’s central hospital. The towering glass building looked sterile and cold under the afternoon sun. "I will wait down here," Marcus said as the car stopped. "Go see your father. I’ve pre-cleared your entry with the hospital staff so no names will appear on the public registry." "Thank you, Marcus," Aurora said sincerely. She got out of the car, holding the twins' hands tightly as she walked through the sliding glass doors of the hospital. The smell of disinfectant and medicine instantly washed over her. She navigated the quiet hallways, heading toward the private wing on the fifth floor. When she reached Room 502, she paused. Through the small glass window of the door, she could see her father, Arthur Hayes. He looked so frail, his hair completely white, sleeping peacefully with various tubes and monitors attached to his chest. Aurora’s eyes filled with tears. She pushed the door open quietly, guiding the twins inside. "Daddy," she whispered, walking over to the side of the bed. The old man’s eyes slowly fluttered open. When his gaze landed on Aurora, a weak, beautiful smile spread across his face. "Aurora... my beautiful girl. You came back." "I came back, Daddy," she sobbed, leaning down to kiss his cheek. "I’m here." Her father’s eyes then drifted to the two little boys standing at the edge of the bed. His breath hitched as he stared at Leo and Liam, his eyes widening in pure shock. He looked at their faces, then up at Aurora. "They... they are his, aren't they?" her father whispered, his voice trembling. "They are Adrian’s boys." "Yes," Aurora whispered, wiping her tears. "But he doesn't know. And he can never find out." Before her father could speak, the door to the hospital room swung open with a violent, sudden force. Aurora spun around, her heart stopping. Standing in the doorway was Adrian. He was dressed in a tailored black suit, his dark hair slightly messy, his tie loosened. He was breathing heavily, as if he had run all the way up the stairs. His face was pale, his eyes completely bloodshot. The cold, ruthless CEO looked entirely broken, his gaze locked onto Aurora like she was a mirage that would disappear if he blinked. "Aurora," he breathed, his voice a low, ragged sob. And then, his dark, piercing eyes slowly dropped down, landing on the two little boys standing right beside her.
