The silence in the hospital room was deafening.
The rhythmic, steady beep-beep-beep of her father’s heart monitor was the only sound cutting through the frozen air. Aurora felt the blood drain from her face, her body locking up in sheer, icy terror. Her hands, still holding the twins' fingers, gripped them so tightly that Leo let out a soft, confused whimper.
"Mommy?" Leo whispered, his little voice echoing in the quiet room.
The word seemed to shatter the spell holding Adrian in place.
Adrian’s gaze, which had been desperately drinking in the sight of Aurora’s face, snapped down to the two boys. His breath hitched, a sharp, ragged sound tearing from his throat. He took a slow, trembling step into the room, his eyes scanning the twins' features with a frantic, agonizing intensity.
He saw the jet-black hair. He saw the sharp, unmistakable set of their jawlines. And then, Leo looked up, meeting his gaze with the exact same piercing, pitch-black eyes that Adrian saw in the mirror every single morning.
Adrian’s knees physically buckled. He had to reach out and grip the edge of a nearby medical cart to keep himself from collapsing to the floor.
"Adrian, get out," Aurora said, her voice instantly rising, sharp and hostile. She stepped directly in front of the twins, physically blocking his view, her heart hammering so hard she could hear it in her ears. "Get out of this room right now!"
But Adrian wasn't the man who listened to orders. He looked up, his face pale, his eyes completely bloodshot and shining with a thick glaze of tears. The ruthless, terrifying billionaire who had ruled the city's financial market for five years looked completely, utterly broken.
"They're mine," he whispered. It wasn't a question. His voice was a low, gravelly rasp, thick with five years of unshed tears, desperate longing, and sudden, shocking realization. "Aurora... they're mine. They have my eyes. They have my face."
"They are my children!" Aurora hissed, her voice trembling with a ferocious, protective rage. She glared at him, her posture completely rigid. "They have nothing to do with you! I raised them alone. I protected them alone. You have no right to even look at them!"
"No right?" Adrian repeated, his voice suddenly dropping into a dangerous, dark register. He stood up slowly, his towering frame instantly casting a long shadow over the room.
The shock on his face was rapidly transforming into something much more volatile—the awakening of a dormant, suffocating obsession that had been locked away in the dark for half a decade.
"I spent five years dying inside, Aurora. I spent every single day, every single night, tearing this world apart looking for you. I thought you hated me so much you would rather live in the shadows. And all this time... you had my children?"
"I hid them from you!" she fired back, refusing to flinch as he took another step closer. "Because I knew exactly what you would do! You wanted to cage me, Adrian. You wanted to own me. I wasn't going to let you do that to my babies!"
"Mommy, who is the angry man?" Liam asked from behind her coat, his tiny voice shaking with fear.
The sound of his second son's voice sent a violent jolt through Adrian's chest. He looked at the edge of the coat where Liam was hiding. The raw, possessive instinct that ran through his veins flared to life, hotter and more intense than it had ever been five years ago. He didn't just want to pull Aurora into his arms; he wanted to wrap his entire existence around all three of them and never let them see the sun again.
"Adrian, back up," Aurora warned, her eyes darting to the emergency call button on the wall. "If you take one more step, I will call security. I will make a scene. I will make sure the press hears about how the great Adrian Ashford is harassing a patient in a private ward."
Adrian stopped, but his dark eyes never left her face. He was breathing heavily, his chest rising and falling violently beneath his tailored black suit.
"You think security can stop me from taking what is mine, Aurora?" Adrian whispered, his voice dangerously smooth, the cold, ruthless CEO slowly creeping back to cover his raw emotion. "I own this hospital. I own the security team downstairs. I own the very ground you are standing on."
"But you don't own us," she said, her voice cold as ice.
Adrian’s jaw clenched so hard a muscle ticked violently. He looked at her defiant, beautiful face, then back at the twins. The realization that she had successfully hidden his sons from him for five years was a bitter, agonizing pill to swallow—but the sheer joy of seeing them alive, of knowing they were real, was overriding everything else.
He slowly reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone.
"Marcus," Adrian said into the receiver, his voice flat, authoritative, and completely empty of emotion. "Bring the SUV to the private rear exit of the hospital. Now."
"Adrian, what are you doing?" Aurora gasped, her protective maternal instincts screaming at her to run.
"I am taking my family home," Adrian said, turning off the phone and sliding it back into his pocket. He looked at her with a dark, unyielding intensity that left no room for negotiation. "You wanted a fight five years ago, Aurora. You ran away and you won the first round. But the game is over now. You are not leaving my sight again. Not you. And certainly not my sons."
"I am not going anywhere with you!" she shouted.
"You can walk out of here on your own feet, holding their hands," Adrian said, his voice dropping into a low, gravelly whisper as he stepped close enough for her to smell the familiar, intoxicating scent of his cedarwood cologne. "Or I can have my security team carry you and the boys out. Either way, Aurora... you are sleeping under my roof tonight."
Aurora looked at her sleeping father, then at the twins, and finally into Adrian’s dark, obsessed eyes. She realized with a sinking heart that Marcus had been right. Adrian’s power was absolute, and now that he knew the truth, there was no escaping him.
She had returned to his city, and the cage doors were slamming shut once more.
