65 Danny lurched through the trees, parallel to the path of the river. A stabbing, grating pain shot through his right leg with every step. s**t! It felt like the old man had broken his shin with his goddamned cane. He should’ve known better—he did know better! It was Adam’s fault. Something about him overwhelmed Danny’s good sense. Except he could lay a lot of things at Adam’s door, but this wasn’t one of them. It wasn’t Adam’s fault; it was his own. He’d listened to his ego (how many men have I killed, decades younger than this man?) instead of his instincts (he is not as he appears). Danny’s ego had gotten him in trouble from the start. All of the bad decisions he’d made over the past month could be traced to ego. He’d have to do better if he wanted to get out of this in one piece. D
