15 Bruce sat outside the Sheriff’s Department, sipping a lukewarm, bitter cup of coffee. It was midmorning—after ten a.m., he saw by his watch—and Adam had been in there for a long time. Adam wasn’t alone—there’d been vehicles from multiple law enforcement agencies coming and going with witnesses all morning—but he did seem to be special in the amount of time they were taking with them. The poor guy must be a real sight by now, considering how bad he’d looked the night before. Bruce almost felt guilty for calling in the tip. But not quite.
