Chapter 27Lina
Her drink was fizzy and sweet, but Lina barely managed a few sips because everyone seemed to want to greet her and make her feel welcome. They were all so nice! The women present all knew each other and there was friendly banter and camaraderie similar to Mrs. Langstuhl’s boarding house, yet also very different. The women here were older by far than the young teachers she’d roomed with and most of them had short hair and wore no make-up. And they all wore pants. Every single one.
Gossip flowed as freely as it did anywhere a group of women socialized and it didn’t take Lina long to realize that she was at its center. She hadn’t yet figured out why and was about to ask Emery when a woman who seemed to be in charge announced that it was time to eat.
