Episode 4: Into the Darkness

1558 Words
The night stretched on endlessly after Kade’s abrupt departure. Alyssa remained by the window, staring out into the vast darkness of the estate gardens, her heart pounding with every sound the wind carried. She replayed his words in her head—“They’re closer than you think.” The howl she’d heard earlier still echoed in her mind. It wasn’t just a sound; it was a warning, a threat. Alyssa tried to shake off the fear creeping up her spine, but it clung to her like a second skin. She had to know more. The next morning, she found herself back in town, searching for Kade. She didn’t know where he lived or even if he’d show up at all, but something told her he’d be close. The streets were quieter than usual, the townspeople whispering about strange sightings in the woods. Alyssa caught snippets of conversations as she walked: “Another animal found… shredded…” “They say it’s wolves. Big ones.” “Not normal wolves, though—bigger, smarter.” Her stomach churned. She had to find Kade. As she turned the corner near the town square, a hand grabbed her wrist. Alyssa gasped, spinning around to see Kade standing there, his expression unreadable. “You’re looking for me,” he said. “Don’t do that,” she snapped, yanking her wrist free. “And yes, I am. We need to talk.” Kade sighed, his jaw tightening. “Not here.” He led her to a secluded alley behind one of the older buildings. The air between them felt heavy, charged with unspoken tension. “You can’t keep running away when I ask questions,” Alyssa said, crossing her arms. “You owe me answers.” Kade leaned against the wall, his piercing gaze fixed on her. “I told you the truth last night. I’m a werewolf. There’s a pack hunting in these woods, and they’re after you.” “Why me?” she asked, her voice rising. “I don’t know,” he admitted, his frustration evident. “But there’s something about you—something they want.” Alyssa frowned, trying to piece everything together. “You keep saying that, but it doesn’t make sense. I’m just… me.” “No,” Kade said firmly. “You’re not. You’re different, Alyssa. I don’t know how yet, but I can feel it.” Later that evening, Alyssa returned home, her mind swirling with questions. She needed answers, and she wasn’t going to wait for Kade to provide them. She went to the study—a grand, dusty room filled with books Eleanor never read. Alyssa rarely ventured in, but tonight, it felt like the right place to start. She searched the shelves, pulling down books on the town’s history, folklore, and anything that might mention wolves or strange occurrences. Hours passed, and just as she was about to give up, she found a thin, leather-bound book tucked in the corner of the shelf. The title read: “The Lost Lineage: Secrets of Crescent Pines.” She flipped through the pages, her heart racing as she skimmed over mentions of wolves, mysterious disappearances, and ancient rituals. Then, she came across a passage that stopped her cold: "The Crescent Pack, a lineage of powerful wolves tied to the blood of their human counterparts, often sought those of rare heritage to strengthen their power. The chosen ones bore a mark of destiny—hidden, but undeniable." Alyssa’s hand flew to her necklace, the emerald pendant resting against her skin. Could this be connected to her? As the clock struck midnight, Alyssa closed the book and sat back in her chair, her mind spinning with possibilities. She didn’t know what to believe, but one thing was certain: she wasn’t imagining the danger around her. Suddenly, a sharp knock echoed through the house. Alyssa froze, her heart pounding. The estate was empty except for the staff, and they never knocked at this hour. She stood, every instinct telling her to stay put, but curiosity pushed her forward. She opened the door to the study and stepped into the dimly lit hallway. The knock came again, louder this time. It wasn’t coming from the front door—it was coming from the back, near the garden. Her steps were hesitant as she approached the glass doors that led to the patio. The curtains fluttered slightly in the breeze, and beyond them, the darkness of the garden stretched out like a living thing. “Alyssa.” She gasped, spinning around to see Kade standing in the shadows of the hallway. “What are you doing here?” she whispered, clutching her chest. “I told you to stay inside,” he said, his voice low but firm. “I heard a knock,” she replied, motioning toward the door. Kade’s eyes darkened, and he moved past her, pulling the curtains aside to peer into the night. “Stay here,” he said, stepping outside without another word. Alyssa watched from the doorway as Kade disappeared into the darkness. The air was still, too still, and every sound seemed amplified. Then, she saw them—shadows moving in the distance. Wolves, larger than any she’d ever seen, their glowing eyes piercing the night. One of them stepped forward, its growl echoing across the garden. Kade stood his ground, his body tense, and for a moment, Alyssa thought he might transform, just as he’d hinted. But instead, he spoke, his voice low and commanding. “Leave her alone.” The wolf growled again, louder this time, but it didn’t advance. It turned, disappearing into the shadows, and the others followed suit. Kade returned to the doorway, his expression grim. “They won’t stop,” he said quietly. “What do they want?” Alyssa asked, her voice trembling. He hesitated before answering. “You.” Kade’s answer sent a shiver down Alyssa’s spine. She stepped back, her hand clutching the doorframe for support. “What do you mean, me?” she whispered. He ran a hand through his hair, his frustration barely concealed. “I don’t have all the answers yet, Alyssa, but there’s something about you—something tied to your past. These wolves… they think you’re important to them.” Alyssa’s mind raced, fragments of her life piecing together in ways that didn’t make sense. Her adoption, the mysterious necklace, the whispers about her birth mother. She’d always known there were secrets surrounding her, but now it felt as though they were closing in on her like a noose. “Why won’t they stop?” she asked, her voice trembling despite her attempt to stay composed. “Because they don’t stop,” Kade said bluntly. “Once they’ve marked a target, it’s only a matter of time. Unless—” He cut himself off, looking away. “Unless what?” Alyssa pressed. He hesitated, his jaw tightening. “Unless I protect you. They won’t challenge me if they think you’re… mine.” Alyssa’s breath hitched, the weight of his words hanging heavy between them. “Yours?” “It’s the only way,” he said, his gaze locking onto hers. “The pack respects strength and territory. If they think you’re under my protection, they’ll hesitate. At least for now.” Her heart raced, not just from fear but from the intensity of his gaze. “Why would you do that for me?” For a moment, Kade didn’t answer. His dark eyes softened, just enough to show a glimmer of vulnerability. “Because I can’t stand the thought of them taking you.” The air between them crackled, a mix of tension and something unspoken. Alyssa swallowed hard, feeling the walls she’d built around herself begin to crumble. “Fine,” she said at last, her voice steady despite the storm inside her. “But if we’re doing this, I need to know everything. No more secrets.” Kade nodded, his expression serious. “You’ll know everything. Just not tonight.” The two stepped back inside, closing the door against the encroaching darkness. Alyssa couldn’t shake the feeling that her life would never be the same, that she was stepping into a world far beyond her control. As Kade leaned against the wall, his broad shoulders blocking the light, she caught herself studying him—his sharp features, the way his presence seemed to fill the room. There was something magnetic about him, something that made her want to trust him even when she barely knew him. “Why me?” she asked again, her voice softer now. Kade tilted his head, a faint smirk playing on his lips. “You really don’t see it, do you?” “See what?” He stepped closer, just enough to make her pulse quicken. “You’re not like anyone else, Alyssa. They can sense it, and so can I. Whatever it is that makes you special… it’s worth protecting.” Alyssa held his gaze, her confidence battling the vulnerable flutter in her chest. “Then I guess you’d better keep your promise.” “I will,” Kade said, his voice a low, reassuring rumble. “But you’ll need to trust me.” For the first time, Alyssa nodded without hesitation. Whatever lay ahead, she knew she couldn’t face it alone.
