1. Hazel
After spending over 22 years with my single mom, I had reckoned that I’ll always live under her roof till I got married but fate has a different plan in store for me and made me have this flash of hatred for my mom's husband.
To mom, staying with her would be a good way to make connections because of his rich nature but no, I didn’t like that.
And I also cannot ignore the statement he made on their wedding night and it was the main reason I concluded that it was time to live with my brother.
“You cannot live in my house and not call me dad, in the end, you’ll have to” those were his words and to think that my mom was present and didn’t say a word to it hurts me every time I think about it.
The excitement of meeting my brother after 7 good years made me get to the train station very early and it was a wonderful journey that I couldn’t stop myself from taking pictures.
I arrived at the park, where my brother had told me to wait for him to pick me up, I was about to dial his line when I heard my name from behind.
“Hazel!” I turned around to see a young man who was just a tiny inches taller than I was, I was able to recognize him by the black mole under his chin.
Cheerfully, I ran to where he was standing and he gladly took me in his embrace whilst caressing my hair which was parked in a ponytail.
“Kai!” I clamored excitedly over and over again, he was gleaming, he cannot be the same Kai I knew 7 years ago.
“My pretty little sister looks like my older sister now,” he said playfully, holding my left hand as we both walked to get my luggage.
“Nah, you’ll make me feel old if you say that” I pouted.
“Sorry, I was joking” he looks so pitiful the way he said that, and I couldn’t help but burst into laughter.
After getting my luggage, he ushered me to his car and made a stop at a fast-food restaurant.
“I would’ve prepared homemade food for you but I have a night shift at work and I have to go back after dropping you off at home” He explained, fastening his seat belt and all I did was nod.
I knew the nature of his job so why should I request that he stays with me?
I was so delighted,
That I could visit a new territory and enjoy the new life with my only brother was something that calls for celebration.
Not like I led a tedious life with my mom but graduating college at an early age did not help my life in any way.
Some moments later, Kai drove into the compound and parked in front of the apartment which I speculated was his house and from the look on his face, he was proud.
Of himself, to show me that he has done something worth it during his years of staying here.
“Welcome to the Swan House,” He announced, my eyebrows lifted as I assumed I might have misheard him.
“What did you just say?” I asked, my hands at akimbo as I gaped at him.
Patiently waiting for his answer.
“I said Swan house, Kai Swan…”
“Isn’t that my name?”
“Yes! Yes!, it is” I forced a smile. “I’m just surprised”
“Don’t be, come on in” he beckoned to me as he was already halfway in.
I was wowed at the view of his sitting room and I just can’t comprehend how my bedroom will be if his sitting room was this desirable.
Like, I could just make this my bedroom.
“Your room is over there, you’ll gist me about your trip when I come back tomorrow morning” he pointed to my room whilst passing me the food bag.
I waved bye at him as he departed the house and I just had to put on a fake smile because it felt so weird to stay in this place alone but who am I to worry about that.
I wasted no time in settling into my exotic bedroom that’s just as I’ve imagined, he is not my older brother for decorations, he’s truly my brother.
I had a very quick shower, just because I was dying to have a taste of the food we got for me.
After serving it into a neat dish, I left for the sitting room where I agreed to watch the news or anything to keep myself engaged.
I just had this instinct that I was going to get a call and my phone rang before I could even turn on the tv.
“I knew it!” I let out a soft whiff before picking up the call.
“Hey darling, are you there yet?” My mom asked, I felt like ending the call.
“No, not yet, I’m still at the park”
“C’mon, lying won’t do you any favor, Kai told me already and I just wanted to know if you are safe” she muttered in her normal pity tone.
“I am safe, thanks for asking, bye” I ended the call abruptly.
If she has something more to say, she should just text it or tell my brother.
My attention was drawn back to the Tv and the headline just got me stuck.
“What’s a king without a wife?” I read the lines through my lips again as I couldn’t find the essence of the statement.
It was just so funny how a national Tv could broadcast topics like this about their monarch, something like this is meant to be a closed message.
And what’s their problem if the king doesn’t want to have a wife?
People just focus too much on what doesn’t increase their wealth status and it's a majority problem at this age.

I’ve been sitting in the same spot on the couch for the past three hours and I wouldn’t have tried to get up if not for the sudden discomfort I felt in my back.
Well, I knew what this might be about but checking my tracker, it wasn’t the time for it yet but I still had my suspicion.
I got up, even with all the flashy fluorescent lights, my overthinking self still used my phone flashlight to get into my bathroom.
I was whispering prayers that I shouldn’t be on my period yet just because I have no sanitary pad and my brother isn’t around.
“Damn!” I let out, disappointedly.
I immediately phoned my brother, trying to know where I could get it.
“Can you wait until tomorrow?” He asked. “It’s not so safe to go out at this time of a night” I could sense the worry In his tone.
“I don’t think I have a choice, any near supermarket would do” he gave it another shot of thinking before responding to me.
“Send your wallet details, I’ll send you the money for it,” he said and ended the call and I wasted no time.
All I did was copy, paste, and send and I received it instantly.
I left the house with modest and covered clothes to avoid stories that touch the heart later on because these wicked men are used to saying ‘I attacked her because she was dressed nakedly’
Which is not even right.
I got to the first supermarket and was shocked to see that they were already closed, isn’t it supposed to be 24/7?
‘When you open yours, do it like that’ my subconscious attacked and I just laughed at myself before scouring further.
I was to cross in the opposite direction and I thought it was time to walk over the pedestrian crosswalk not knowing I was just hallucinating.
“What the hell are you doing?” My legs seized to stop on the white lines, I was standing with lights from cars flashing at me.
My mind was in a state of disturbance and I don’t understand why I would be standing in the middle of the road when the cars were rushing.
“Young lady, getaway!” I was too lost in thoughts that it became too late for me to run and thankfully the driver was quick to step on the brake pad.
“You’ll watch where you’re headed!” Says the driver who almost hit me and the only thing that got me staring was the face I saw as I walked past the car, although it was blurry I could tell the difference.
I had to treat the bruise on my left shoulder along with getting the sanitary pad.
Two parts to lose blood.
I couldn’t trek back home so I just boarded a taxi and it was more than okay.

“Hazel?”
“Hazel?” I wobbled my head at the voice calling for me, gradually and tiredly, I opened my eyes to see Kai staring down at me.
“Awwww” I yawned, stretching tiredly as I compelled myself to sit up.
“Good morning”
“Good morning dear, hope you slept well?”
“Yes, yes! I did,”
“This bed really works for my body” I giggled softly.
“Since we’ve discussed it before you came here, I just think it’d be reasonable if you can commence today” he sat right at the edge of my bed.
“Ohh, I can’t seem to remember”
“The scent shop?” He creased his eyebrows cause I ought to recall.
“Ohhhhh, it escaped my mind” I blurted.
“But, isn’t it too early to start? I can just start from next week Monday and…”
“No, it’s not a government job, it’s a self-established business!” He cuts in before I could conclude.
“Moreover, it belongs to a friend and you’ll help in managing it until she returns since that’s your niche” he added.
“So, what should I do now?”
“Get up, clean up, dress up, eat up, and go to work”
“Wow”
Did I call him my real brother?
Is it too late to take that back?
