Chapter 1: Scouting
The guys had sent me to make sure nothing had changed since last year. Apparently this was an annual debacle. At least attempting to steel the wolf statue from our rival school during homecoming week. They got caught last year. That's why they had recruited me. I didn't fit the groups usually profile. That is to say. I am a woman. I was a social floater...or drifter...or something that sounds way more classy than that. Various groups tended to adopt me temporarily while it suited them but I was also pretty comfortable being alone. I stood in the court yard looking up at the huge bronze creepy wolf sculpture. The wolverines used a wolf as their mascot Wich I found annoying. Why not just be the wolves then? The wilderness wolves sounds just as good as the wilderness wolverines. It was a private college it's not like they had to be unique. This place was snazzy my community college was low on funds and frequently rented tools, space, and other resources from them. So it's not like I wasn't here all the time for labs. The two schools had even worked together to make a hockey rink for both school teams to use. Unlike legacy county community college, my school, wilderness university had their own practice rink. The two schools would have a match at the beginning of the season to determine who got to play first all year. The other teams games couldn't start until the winners were done. That's how this whole rivalry started. The snobs at this school seamed like they could smell outsiders. They litterally turned their noses up and huffed at me for just being their. This also agitated me. I was on edge looking for the cameras we heard rumor had been in stalled. Thats when I felt it. Like someone breathing down the back of my neck. My two toned pixie cutt stood on end. I spun around. It was back...or had the wolf statue just given me the creeps? No it was definitely back. It lurked in the corner of my vision. So I could see it but I couldn't see it. It was larger than life, bigger than the bronze statue. The air just glinted around her. My imaginary nightmare wolf. She wasn't inherently scary. I don't know how I knew she was a she or why she was silver seeing her wasn't a thing that included color and I definitely couldn't tell a wolves gender out the corner of my eye. The light just felt like it glinted around the massive six foot long wolf. I suspect I thought she was silver because I wanted to separate the crazy hallucination from my self. I wanted to believe it was only my sister's eye that saw her. My silver eye. The reason I had white blond hair mixed with my beautiful thick black hair. I desperately wanted to believe that I wasn't crazy my twin sister was crazy. I had absorbed my twin in the womb. We discovered this when my mother was trying to get child support from a guy we thought might have been my father. He wasnt. The wolf lurked around sniffing the statue and the students in the courtyard. It was 15 till the hour. Most classes started on the hour so there was a lot of hustle and bustle to get from class to class. I had a free hour next. It was the beginning of the year so I didn't have anything to study except the layout of this court yard. The stupid wolf was distracting me from my mission. I needed to figure out if anything was going to mess up the plan but I was trafixed by looking at my imaginary friend sniffing a random guy. He was tall. Pretty good looking. Very muscular but not creepily muscle bound like some of the people walking around here. Wow was everyone at this school ripped? Even the girls were in way better shape than me. I was a bit of a book worm. I knew I needed to get back into.dance before I lost the muscles for it. But transitioning from highschool to college year had been a lot. And working two jobs this summer to pay for school made it impossible then too. She was still sniffing this guy. He had cute tousled brown hair that looked like it was due for a cut. He was like a foot taller than me and he was crossing the massive court yard with such confidence. I can see why the wolf liked him. s**t he was walking twords me. I'd been staring at the statue watching him out the corner of my eye too long he probably noticed. Adid he know I was scouting for the statue heist? s**t s**t s**t. Don't panic it's fine he probably think you're hot. The little voice showed up about the same time the wolf did. She was a hoe...well she was confident and pushy. Things tended to escalate when I took her advice. "Admiring the statue?" The cute boy bemused to me. "Well I'm annoyed by it, why be the wolverines and have a wolf mascot!?" I grumbled. "So your not a student here then are you?" "How could you tell?" I said gesturing to my cheap outfit. I glanced dow and noticed my shoes had finally given out and you could see my mismatched socks through them. Wow I did not fit in here. He looked down like he hadn't noticed I wasn't wear the same uniform as everyone else. If it wasn't my clothes that gave it away what was it...." I attend legacy. Go snow leopards" I mumbled waving a tinny imaginary flag. "Ah so your the scout for the statue theives!" He chuckled again. This guy's was in a really good mood. Like annoyingly good mood. His light blue eyes were filled with laughter. Until he looked at his watch. " Shoot i got a meeting at well. Now. My name's Matt." He held out his hand. I grabbed his had in a firm hand shake. I hated when people gave me mamsie pamsie hand shakes cause I'm a 'lady'. He did a good job of matching my energy. I could tell he'd been expecting a little limp wristed hand clasp. But that's no what he got. He smiled again. He had a nice smile. Strong jaw line. Broad shoulder. Long legs. He was greased in the navy blue pants and a nice black button up just like the rest of the guys and at least haft the girls that were no longer scurrying around us in the court yard. If he had a 2:00 meeting he was definitely going to be late. " I'm..." Have you ever been staring off into space and felt like your soul left your body? This felt like that. But it also looked like that. I was suddenly six feet above and behind my self. But my body was still talking..." Lilah, short for lilac!" My body said placing a hand on Matt's arm. My name was Lilah but it was short for Delilah not lilac lilac was an alter ego I sometimes put on when I was dancing. She was me but sexy and confident, her personality didn't change to fit the group. She just felt the group. This was so weird. I've never not been I control like this. " Is Matt short for Mathew?" Lilac inquired? "Actually it is" Matt replied smiling down at me. Wait were they flirting! I didn't have time for flirting I was caught planning a heist! " You know you should text me sometime, maybe we can go for drink?" Lilac asked reaching for my phone. She handed it Matt. He enters his number. Before sliding my phone back into my pocket with a mischievous little wink. My jaw hit the floor or my spirit jaw hit the floor. My body flipped shimmied it's shoulders and picoted on its heels and walked out of the court yard. Leaving me floating there staring at the creepy imaginary wolf who I could now see in color yes it was silver and it was majestic as f**k but it was also drooling over Matt who was drooling over my ass as my body sauntered away. What just happened? I some how floated behind my self trying to obscure matts view. I'm so glad I can't usually see how people look when. I walk away this is going to give me anxiety for days. Once my body was alone I grabbed my shoulder and yanked. To my surprise I pulled what looked to me with long white hair and silver eyes out of my body. My body dropped like a sack of flower. Crumpled on the ground. It's very distressing to see yourself unconscious. "Oh relax he's hot and he's into us. Just get back in the body before some one sees us!" The spiritty person thing I fron of me scoffed. "What's going on?" I demanded. " You really haven't figured it out yet?" She scoffed. God she's cocky. "I'm your twin lilac. I've been trying to share this body with you since we turned 16! I've always been here but that was when Wolfie and I got let out of our cage." That all added up. That's when the voice started prompting me to be more confident and when the wolf had started to appear in the corner of my eyes. Wolfie was really magnificent When she wasn't lurking. I guess knowing it was real made it less creepy. How did I suddenly know they were real. Maybe I just lost my mind. Wolfie was sniffing our body. She gently put one paw in the middle of our back then the other then poof she was gone. Lilac and I both stated at our body as it began to contort and change. We both doubled over and gasped in pain. Then my body was gone. No more pixie cut adorned woman laying crumpled on the ground. Suddenly a massive silver wolf took it's place. Then if felt like a vacuum was pulling my toes. Then my shins. Then my whole person back into my body. Well Wolfie's body. I've been trying to do this for four years. growled a powerful and feminine but low voice in my head. Wolfie? Lilac exclaimed astonished. Also in my head Ok what the hell is going on someone fill me in I whined loudly to my now overwhelming internal monologue. I am growing increasingly worried about my mental stability. Don't worry you're not crazy. The voice identifed as Wolfie comforts. Not the most comforting thing to hear in ones head. My name's not Wolfie, I couldn't talk till I got control of the body, my name is Lyra why would you assume I wanted to be called Wolfie. The voice newly identified to be Lyra snarls at us. Sorry I had to name us both when we were little and you were a wolf it just made sense Lilac shrugs off the anger. She is annoyingly dismissive. I stand up carefully not really sure how to do the four leg thing. Lilac laughs at me. I think I liked it better when she could barely get a word into my head. Lyra gently took the reigns. Let me show you we can share. She instructs. Someone's coming! How do I run away! Mmmmmm smell that? Lyra inquires. Lilac's curiosity is begging to stay out and meet this mysterious and frankly amazing smelling person. I finally got my feet under me and sprinted away. My small town was in the middle of no where way up north. The trees were thick and easy to disappear into. It was the tail end of summer still and the warm wet air had me panting in no time as I ran through the thick woods. I was excited for fall. The leaves would be so beautiful
