Shadows Closing In

399 Words
The night presses in heavy, thick with silence that feels anything but safe. I pace the length of the room, heart thudding in my chest, my skin still tingling from his touch. It’s not just desire that hums in my veins—it’s fear. The shadows outside aren’t just shadows anymore. He watches me, leaning against the window, sharp eyes scanning the streets below. The faint glow of the city outlines his figure, dangerous and magnetic. “They’re getting bolder,” he says, voice low. “Whoever they are, they’re closer now.” A shiver wracks through me. “And what if they find us?” His head turns, gaze locking with mine, and in that moment, all doubt disappears. “They won’t,” he says with lethal certainty. “Because no one takes what’s mine. No one.” The claim should frighten me. It should make me question everything. But instead, heat pools low in my stomach, shameful and thrilling. The obsession is a chain, and I’ve already wrapped it willingly around my throat. He moves closer, closing the space between us in a heartbeat. His hand cups my chin, forcing my eyes up to his. “Say it,” he demands. My lips part, trembling. “I’m yours.” A slow, dangerous smile curves across his mouth. “Good. Because I intend to keep you that way.” Before I can speak, the sound of shattering glass slices through the moment. The window behind him explodes inward, shards glittering like deadly rain. My scream rips free as he yanks me against him, shielding me from the storm of broken glass. Voices echo in the distance, footsteps pounding closer. The danger we’ve only whispered about has finally arrived. His arms tighten around me, his breath hot against my ear. “Stay close. Don’t run. No matter what happens, you stay with me.” My body is trembling, but not from fear alone. The adrenaline, the intimacy of his command, the sheer force of his presence—it’s intoxicating. I nod, my voice barely audible. “I trust you.” His lips brush my temple, fleeting but possessive. “Good girl,” he murmurs, before turning to face the threat with a darkness in his eyes that chills me to the bone. The devil isn’t just obsessed with me—he’s ready to burn the world to keep me.
