Chapter 1: The Call from Beyond the Veil
In the quiet hills of ancient Judea a young shepherd named Eliab tended his flock under the vast open sky. The sun had just slipped behind the western ridges painting the clouds in hues of gold and rose. Eliab was twenty years old with strong hands and a heart that often wandered far from the simple tasks of counting sheep and mending fences. He had heard the stories from the elders around the evening fires. They spoke of a kingdom not made with human hands a realm where justice flowed like a river and peace rested upon every heart like morning dew. On this particular evening as the first stars appeared Eliab sat upon a large stone and gazed toward the horizon. A gentle wind stirred the grass and carried with it a sound unlike any he had known before. It was not the bleating of lambs nor the call of night birds. It was a voice clear and steady that seemed to speak directly to his spirit. Eliab rise and follow the path that opens before you. The Kingdom of God is near. He stood quickly his heart pounding. He looked around but saw no one. The voice came again softer yet impossible to ignore. The Kingdom is not found in palaces of stone or in the councils of the powerful. It grows within the hearts of those who seek it with humility and truth. Come and see. Eliab felt a pull stronger than any command he had ever received from his father or the village leaders. He secured the sheep in their fold for the night took only a small loaf of bread a skin of water and his staff and set out along a narrow trail that wound upward into the hills. The path had not been there the day before or so it seemed to him now. Rocks that once blocked the way had shifted aside and wildflowers bloomed along the edges where none had grown before. He walked for hours through the deepening night yet he felt no weariness. Instead a quiet excitement filled him. The stars above shone brighter than he remembered and the air carried a sweetness like honey and frankincense mixed together. As the moon rose high he crested a ridge and stopped in wonder. Before him lay a valley bathed in soft light that seemed to come from within the earth itself. In the center stood a great city not built of mud bricks or hewn stone but of living light. Its walls shimmered with colors that shifted gently from sapphire to emerald to pure gold. Towers rose gracefully into the sky and at the highest point a throne could be glimpsed surrounded by what looked like countless beings of radiance moving in perfect harmony. Eliab whispered to himself This cannot be real. Yet his feet carried him forward down the slope toward the valley. As he drew nearer he noticed people walking along the paths leading to the city. Some were old some young some richly dressed and others in simple garments like his own. All moved with a peace he had never seen in the marketplaces or synagogues of his village. A man with kind eyes and a short gray beard approached him on the path. He wore a simple robe of white linen and carried a staff similar to Eliab’s own. Welcome traveler the man said. I am called Matthias. You have heard the call. Eliab nodded still trying to find his voice. I heard a voice in the hills. It told me the Kingdom is near. Is this the place? Matthias smiled warmly. This is the threshold. The Kingdom of God is both here and yet to come fully. It exists in the hearts of those who receive it and it will one day fill all creation. But to enter you must leave behind what weighs you down. Eliab looked down at his simple belongings. I have little. Only bread water and my staff. It is not these things Matthias replied gently. It is the burdens of the heart. Anger unforgiveness fear of tomorrow pride in your own strength. Lay them down here and you may pass through the gate. Eliab thought for a moment. He remembered the arguments with his older brother over the inheritance the nights he had lain awake worrying whether the flock would survive the drought and the quiet resentment he sometimes felt toward the wealthy merchants who looked down on shepherds. One by one he named these things in his heart and as he did he felt a lightness spread through his chest. I lay them down he said. Matthias placed a hand on his shoulder. Well done. Now come. There is much to see and the King Himself desires that you know Him. Together they walked toward the glowing gates. As they approached Eliab noticed that the gates were not made of metal or wood but seemed woven from living vines heavy with fruit that gave off a faint luminous glow. Two figures stood guard yet they did not carry weapons. Instead they held scrolls and their faces shone with joy. The guards nodded to Matthias and turned their gaze to Eliab. What is your name and why do you seek the Kingdom? one asked. I am Eliab son of Obed a shepherd from the hills. I seek the Kingdom because the voice called me and my heart longs for something greater than the life I have known. The second guard smiled. The King receives all who come with honest hearts. Enter and be welcome. The gates opened without a sound and Eliab stepped through. Inside the city the streets were paved with stones that felt warm and alive beneath his feet. Buildings rose in elegant curves adorned with carvings of olive branches wheat sheaves and flowing rivers. People moved about with purpose yet without haste. Some carried baskets of bread that never seemed to empty. Others sang songs that lifted the spirit and made the air itself vibrate with harmony. Matthias led him to a wide square where a fountain bubbled with water that sparkled like liquid diamonds. Around the fountain sat men women and children listening to a teacher whose face radiated compassion and authority. The teacher spoke of seeds planted in good soil of lost coins found again of banquets prepared for the least and the last. Eliab sat at the edge of the crowd and listened. Every word seemed to sink deep into his soul like rain on parched ground. When the teacher finished he looked directly at Eliab and beckoned him closer. Come my son. What troubles you? Eliab hesitated then spoke. I am only a shepherd. I know little of kingdoms or kings. Why would the King of this place call someone like me? The teacher placed a hand on Eliab’s shoulder. The Kingdom of God belongs to such as you. Not to the proud or the self sufficient but to those who know they need grace. In this realm the first shall be last and the last first. Strength is found in weakness and greatness in serving. Tell me Eliab what do you desire most? Eliab thought carefully. I desire to know the King. To understand His ways and to live as one of His people. A smile of deep pleasure crossed the teacher’s face. Then you shall. But first you must journey through the Kingdom and see its wonders and its challenges. The road is not always easy yet every step is guarded by love. Matthias touched Eliab’s arm. Come. Night falls even in this place though the light never fully fades. There is a house prepared for you. Tomorrow we begin the journey in earnest. Eliab followed Matthias through winding streets to a modest dwelling built of warm golden stone. Inside a simple meal waited bread fresh from the oven fruits of every kind and a cup of wine that tasted of joy itself. After eating Eliab lay down on a soft bed and sleep came quickly filled with dreams of light and open fields. When he woke the next morning the city was already stirring with gentle activity. Matthias waited outside with two other travelers a young woman named Miriam who had been a weaver in a distant town and an older man named Tobias who had once been a scribe in the temple courts. We are to travel together Matthias explained. The King sends us to the outer fields where the Kingdom is still taking root. There we will plant seeds of truth and help those who are seeking. Eliab felt a mixture of excitement and nervousness. What if I fail? What if I do not understand what is required of me? Miriam smiled kindly. None of us is perfect in our own strength. The King provides what we lack. Trust in His guidance and we will grow together. Tobias nodded. I once thought knowledge alone would open every door. Now I know that love is the key that unlocks the deepest mysteries of the Kingdom. The four companions set out through the city gates and followed a broad path that led toward distant green fields. As they walked Eliab noticed that the landscape changed subtly with each step. Trees heavy with fruit lined the way and streams of clear water flowed alongside the path. Birds sang melodies that seemed to carry words of encouragement. After several hours they reached the edge of a vast plain where workers labored under the sun. Some plowed the soil others scattered seed and still others tended young shoots that pushed through the earth. Yet Eliab saw that not all the ground was the same. In some places the soil was rich and dark while in others it was rocky or filled with thorns. Matthias pointed to a section of field where the plants grew strong and tall. That is good soil. The seed of the Kingdom takes root there and produces a harvest thirty sixty even a hundred times what was sown. But the King desires that every heart become good soil. As they watched a sudden wind arose and dark clouds gathered overhead. Rain began to fall but it was not ordinary rain. Each drop carried a spark of light and where it touched the rocky ground small cracks appeared allowing the seed to find a place to grow. Eliab turned to Matthias. Is this how the Kingdom advances? Through storms as well as sunshine? Yes Matthias replied. Trials test the soil of our hearts. Those who endure become strong and their lives bear much fruit for the King. They spent the rest of the day working alongside the laborers. Eliab found joy in the simple tasks of clearing stones and watering young plants. With every action he felt his understanding deepen. The Kingdom was not a distant dream but a living reality that could grow within him and through him. As evening approached the companions gathered around a fire. Miriam shared stories of how she had once woven beautiful garments yet found no lasting satisfaction until she heard the call and laid down her old life. Tobias spoke of the laws he had studied and how they pointed toward a greater righteousness that only the King could provide. Eliab listened and then shared his own simple tale of the voice in the hills and the journey that had brought him here. As he spoke he realized that his ordinary life as a shepherd had prepared him in ways he had never imagined. The patience learned watching over sheep the courage needed to face wolves in the night and the wonder of seeing new lambs born all these things now served a higher purpose. When the stars appeared overhead the group prayed together. Their words rose like incense and Eliab felt a deep peace settle over him. For the first time he truly believed that he belonged in this Kingdom. Yet as sleep came that night a new awareness stirred within him. The journey had only just begun. There would be greater challenges ahead tests of faith and moments when the light of the Kingdom might seem dim. But he also sensed that the King was closer than he realized watching over every step with unfailing love.
