Glimpse of the past
"Don't tell me you did it. How could you, you bastard." I heard them yelling. They didn't know that I came. I never meant to eavesdrop but I am glad that I did. I heard something break, I think it's a glass or vase. I just want to knock on the door and rescue her but I know they love each other and he won't hurt her. I know they are going through a lot, especially her. So I was waiting in the living room. Suddenly, I heard a bloodcurdling scream. I ran to their room and froze when I saw the stairs covered in blood.
I woke in a pool of sweat. It's been years but still, these nightmares never stopped. It's the 3rd day in this week I was woken up by this terrifying nightmare. I had counseling for over a year but the nightmare kept haunting me but it's effect on me has reduced. I looked at the clock, it was 6 am. I went to the bathroom and looked at the mirror. I had bags under my eyes and I looked pale. The memories of my childhood rushed to my mind.
My father was in the military. My mother was a high school teacher. They had a completely arranged marriage. My mom was 21 when she married and dad was 24. It is strange, like you all of a sudden leave your parents and stay with a stranger. I mean, how do you trust him? What if he is like every other man? But my parent's life was a perfect example of love and happiness. They had arguments but they always managed to find a way to solve it. We are a middle-class family but we are happy that way. We have a two-story house with 5 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms and my father owned a car. Now, I have a car too. But a few years ago everything changed but most importantly I changed.
A few years ago, my father was retired from the military. My mom resigned from her job after that. We were a happy family me, my younger brother and her. I was 18 then, studying in a medical college in Mumbai. So I had to move from Pune, where I lived, to Mumbai with her because she worked in Mumbai. Things were going great, we used to hang out, have fun like normal people. She was my best friend. She was everything to me. I was more attached to her than to my mother but everything suddenly changed when she met......
"Roopi, you okay?" I heard my mom ask that's when I noticed that I have been standing in the bathroom for quite a long time. I quickly wiped my tears.
"I am fine." I said and started brushing my teeth.
