Chapter 1: The Offer
Emily Carter wiped her hands on her apron and forced another smile as she delivered a plate to table twelve. The restaurant buzzed with laughter, clinking glasses, and the low hum of conversations, but none of it touched her. Her mind was elsewhere — on unpaid bills, overdue rent, and the hospital.
“Emily! Move faster,” her manager snapped from behind the counter.
“Sorry,” she replied quickly, adjusting the tray in her hands.
Her feet throbbed from standing all day, and her shoulders ached, but she kept going. She didn’t have the luxury of slowing down. Every shift meant more money, and right now, money was the only thing keeping her world from collapsing.
Her phone vibrated in her pocket.
She ignored it.
It vibrated again.
And again.
An uneasy feeling settled in her chest. During a brief pause, she stepped into the staff hallway and pulled out her phone. Her breath caught when she saw the caller ID.
City Hospital.
Her fingers trembled as she answered. “Hello?”
“Miss Carter?” a calm voice spoke. “This is regarding your father. His condition has worsened. The doctors recommend immediate surgery.”
Emily leaned against the wall. “Is… is he okay?”
“He’s stable for now, but the surgery cannot be delayed. You’ll need to arrange payment by tomorrow.”
Her heart sank. “How much?”
The number the nurse mentioned echoed in her ears. It felt unreal — more money than she had earned in years.
“I… I understand,” she whispered, though she didn’t.
When she ended the call, her vision blurred. She blinked rapidly, refusing to cry at work. She couldn’t afford to lose this job too.
Hours later, her shift finally ended. The night air was cool as she stepped outside, exhaustion weighing on her body. She hugged herself, trying to gather strength, trying to think of a solution that didn’t exist.
That was when a sleek black car pulled up in front of her.
Emily frowned. The vehicle looked expensive — completely out of place on this quiet street. She stepped aside, assuming it would drive past, but it stopped.
The back door opened.
A tall man stepped out.
He wore a perfectly tailored dark suit, his posture straight, his expression unreadable. Even under the streetlight, his presence was commanding. People like him didn’t visit small restaurants. People like him belonged in penthouses and boardrooms.
“Emily Carter?” he asked, his deep voice calm but firm.
She hesitated. “Yes…?”
“I’m Alexander Reed.”
The name sounded familiar, but she couldn’t place it. Before she could speak, he continued.
“I have a proposal for you.”
Emily crossed her arms cautiously. “What kind of proposal?”
He studied her for a moment, his sharp eyes assessing, calculating. “Marry me, and I’ll pay for your father’s surgery.”
The world seemed to go silent.
“I… what?” she stammered.
“It will be a contract marriage,” he said evenly. “No emotional involvement. No expectations beyond public appearances. In return, I will cover your father’s medical expenses and provide financial support.”
Emily stared at him, certain this had to be a joke. “You don’t even know me.”
“I know enough,” he replied. “You need money. I need a wife.”
Her heart pounded. This was insane. Dangerous. Unreal.
“Why me?” she asked softly.
Alexander stepped closer, his presence overwhelming. “Because you’re ordinary enough to avoid attention… and desperate enough to accept.”
The words stung, but they were true.
Emily looked away, thinking of her father lying in a hospital bed. She had no options left.
When she looked back at him, her voice was barely above a whisper.
“And if I say yes?”
Alexander’s lips curved faintly. “Then your life changes tonight.”
