Stacy’s POV
The day that we escaped from the hands of the evil Phantom laboratories and gave Greg Phantom the scare of his lifetime was the best day of my life since I was held under my will. Not only did I manage to save Thomas and two other people, but I was on my way to my own freedom.
Or so I freaking thought.
It was only when I was calm and the entire laboratory was burning to the ground that I came to realize what I had done and came to question what those guys did to us.
“Hey, what are you planning to do now? Thomas asked me.
For the first time in all those times, I got to see his face and it was comforting enough that I did something good inside that hellhole. I made a friend.
“I don’t know. I just went into a killing spree.” I said while I was staring at the compound of buildings that was nestled among acres of wild trees. We ran as fast as we could when I had my fill of vengeance. I was not certain if Thomas did the same or the other two had the same animal instinct that I had. We were in the many mountains that surrounded the facility and, in my mind, we all had the same questions. We had been in captivity for a long time and our sense of time and dates was pretty messed up.
“Where the f*ck are we?
“Yeah, I have no idea.”
The two other subjects were both females and it was the first time that I had seen them. I only heard their anguished screams from our designated quarters and the only acquaintance I had was with Thomas. One was older, probably close to my mother’s age, and the other was Amy’s age.
“Hi, my name is Stacy.” I said in an attempt to give comfort and break the ice of silence as we all were lost in our sea of thoughts.
Thomas was just staring blankly ahead at the canopy of trees. The other two were huddled against each other. I had a hunch that they were related because of the uncanny resemblance. Then it hit me, my parents!Amy! Edward! They’d be worried sick of me. I was supposed to be at Harvard now studying Law. It was my dream to be the first lawyer in the family and to set the bar high for my siblings.
Panic started to wash all over me. How are we supposed to go back to our families now?
I was about to share my unsolicited thoughts with my fellow subjects when a blaring light from two helicopters almost blinded my sensitive eye. It was almost dark and, from a distance,we could almost see an entire army of men rushing to the still smoking building that used to be Phantom laboratories.
Cocking my head to the side, I thought I could hear them. That would be impossible given the distance that we are now. Roughly half a mile away and we were in an elevated area, I closed my eyes, while trying to focus on my hearing. I could hear footsteps. They were coming from everywhere and were going in different directions. I could hear Greg’s voice. He was mad. I am fairly certain that it was his voice because that was the only voice that she had been hearing her whole duration in the facility.
“Stacy,are you alright?”
“Can’t you hear it?”
“What?” the older woman said, fear registering in her face now as she hugged the younger female closer. Her hug was so tight that I think the girl’s bones might snap.
“We have to go.” I said.
“To where?” the woman said again.
“Thomas, take them far. I will follow.”
“What are you going to do?”
“I am sure that they have any form of telecommunication device with them, we have to get one to let our families know that we are alive.”
Thomas grabbed me by the arm. “Are you out of your mind? You see how many are they? These men were trained to hunt or kill. They’re probably mercenaries. You have no chance against them.”
“I got us out, haven’t I? Trust me on this one, okay, and do as you were told.”
Honestly, I had no idea what to do next other than to run as fast as I could. Surprisingly, I was fast and though it was dark, my eyes were soon adjusting to the absence of light and it might be crazy, but all my senses were amplified. I was wearing nothing but a lab suit and was barefooted, but I was not feeling any pain as the soles of my foot hit a sharp rock or maybe stepped on a twig with thorns. Back at home, I would never dare to go out barefooted because my skin was so thin and sensitive the chances of getting bruised and scratched by fine stones were very high.
In the dark, I could see the squirrels running branch to branch and see the hidden owl in one of the hollow trees. It was chilly and it did not even affect me. I was warm and I was focused on my goal. I do not know why I said to Thomas that I would follow them, when I didn’t even know where they were headed, I just know that I'd be finding them no matter what.
Until I reached the edges of the facility walls. There were three uniformed men patrolling and from a distance I could hear Greg shouting here and there, giving orders as if he owned the world.
“I do not care if it’s still burning inside there! Find me my test subjects and the rest of you, scourge the forests!”
I cannot believe this man, he had the balls to command the guys with guns. He is used to power and authority, but that does not give him the right to take away people and hold them against their own will because he cannot be satisfied with testing with rats alone that he needed human subjects. It was straight up illegal and he could be put in jail for that along with many other cases.
Anger rose through her and she could feel her muscles build up, she saw her hands change into hairy, big and she had claws. Her feet were the same too, but they were bigger and elongated, she had fangs too. Whatever she was, she wanted a piece of Greg Phantom.
Now.
“Stop .”
It was not Thomas. It was the older woman and, like her, she was not the same woman that she had seen a while ago. She was different, but her eyes, they were the same kind blue eyes.
“You...”
“We followed you, Thomas went to get us what you came here to do. He is in the army and he knows how to do this.”
She was still holding me by the arm. If you ask me, I would be scared, she looked like a crocodile that was almost human. It was scary, but taking another look at my features now, I knew that I was too. The girl was in the dark. I could see her silhouette but something was wrong with her. She was trembling in fear too.
“Is she?” I asked gently.
“My daughter and yes, she is also changed.” Her voice was broken. I could hear the pain hanging in that voice.
A twig snapped and we were all alarmed, as if on cue, we all turned in the direction of the sound. The bushes moved and when it moved again, we were relieved to see who it was.
“ I got what we need, let’s go.”
I thought my eyes betrayed me. Like me, Thomas was also a hairy, wolf-like beast holding a satellite laptop in his hand.I am messed up, how are we gonna go out in public looking like this? Humans by nature are afraid of things and phenomena that are beyond their understanding. Especially when we all were lead to believe that sh*ts like this only happen on movies.
