The next morning, the sun shining through the window awoke him. After rising, he rubbed his back and looked at himself in the mirror hanging on the wall. Why didn’t I sell that, too? There was nothing to eat, so he left the apartment and bought a small cake from the nearby baker. Would it be too early for Corip? Vass glanced up at the sun. No. He’d slept in, and it was mid-morning. He headed to the tavern and asked for Corip. “He’s only just got here.” The landlord scratched his beard. “Dunno if he’s ready to see folk yet.” “Can you go and see?” The landlord ambled off toward the back room, and Vass looked around. There was one old drunk in the corner. He looked as if he had already had quite a few. Vass turned his back and took a pinch of scales. That would last him until later. H
