EchoesoftheSunlight

The blinding morning sun washed over the bustling street of Cebu, filtering through the high glass windows of Jen's seaside apartment. The distant sound of roosters, motorbikes, and gentle ocean waves usually brought her comfor, but after a sleepless night of tossing and turning, the bright light only intensified the thumping behind her temples. Jen sat at her small kitchen island, cradling a mug of hot coffee between her palms. Her eyes were fixed on the far wall, where a framed collage of photographs hung, at the center of the frame was a picture of her five - year-old daughter, Gioia, holding up a messy finger painting with a toothy, radiant grin. Gioia's eyes- dar almond shaped, and unnervingly observant - were an exact copy of Thomas's. A sharp spike of anxiety shot through Jen's chest. The events of the previous night kept playing in a terrifying loop: the way Thomas had pinned her against the wall, the raw hunger in his voice, and his vow that he wasn't going to leave her life again. " Mommy! Look what I drew." A sweet, high pitched voice shattered the tense silence. Gioia came bouncing out of her bedroo, her dar curls tumbling over her shoulders as she ran across the tiled floor in her colorful pajamas. She thrust a piece of paper into Jen's lap before crumbling up onto the wooden barstool beside her. Jen instantly pushed her worries aside, a genuine smile breaking across her face as she wrapped an arm around her daughter's small waist. "Good morning, my sweet girl." Jen murmured, kissing Gioia's soft cheek. She looked down at the drawing, which showed three stick figures holding hands under oversized, yellow sun- a big woman, a tiny girl, and a fluffy dog. Is this us?" " Yes! That's you, that's me, and that's the puppy were going to get when I turn six!" Gioia announced with absolute conviction, her dar eyes sparkling mischief. Jen chuckled, ruffled her hair, and smoothed down her little yellow shirt. " Oh, is that so? We'll see about the puppy, young lady. Did you sleep well?" "Uh-Uh! Nanny Rosa made me warm milk." Gioia said, leaning her head against Jen's shoulder. She tilted her chin up, her sharp, analytical gaze locking onto her mother's tired face. " Mommy... why are your eyes puffy? Did you cry at the big hotel party?" Jen's breath caught in her throat. She was constantly amazed - and terrified- by how sharp Gioia was. The girl picked up on emotional shifts faster than adults. "No sweetie, Mommy just worked very late," Jen lied smoothly, tucking a stray curl behind Gioia's ear. " Lots of important visitors from overseas came to the resort, so I didn't get much sleep." "Overseas?" Gioia asked, picking up on strawberry from a bowl on the counter. " Like from America?" Where my papa is?" The word papa hit Jen like a physical blow. Jen had never hidden the truth from Gioia- at least not entirely. She had told her daughter that her father was a scientist from America who loved her very much before he had to go far away, but that he couldn't come back. She had spun a gentle lie to protect Gioia's heart, shielding her from the harsh reality that her father had simply disappeared into thin air. " Yes honey, People from America," Jen whispered, her throat dry. " Now, eat your fruit while I get ready for work. Nanny Rosa will be here in ten minutes to take you to preschool." " Okay!" Gioia chirped, happily munching on her strawberry, oblivious to the storm brewing in her mother's heart. Two hours later, Jen stood in the grand lobby of the Solaria Bay Resort , dressed in a sharp beige blazer and matching pencil skirt. She had thirty minutes applying make up to hide the dark circles under her eyes, plastering on a cool, unshakable facade before stepping through the staff doors. She needed this job. The promotion to Head Hospitality Manager was within her grasp, bringing with it a substantial salary increase that would guarantee Gioia's future, fund her private schooling, and secure their independence. She refused to let Thomas Bolduc ruin everything she had worked so hard to build. "Jen! Thank goodness you're here," Colin rushed up to her, holding a thigh stack of printed schedules and architectural blueprints. He looked entirely flustered. " The board had an emergency meeting at seven this morning with Bolduc Dynamics." Jen's shoulders tensed instantly. " And?" " And Mr. Bolduc has restructured the entire operational hierarchy," Colin said, wiping his brow. " He's setting up a permanent executive office here on the top floor. He says he wants hands-on oversight of the entire development phase for the next six months." Six months. The lobby suddenly felt like it was spinning. Jen gripped her digital tablet tight against her stomach, her knuckles turning bone-white. Six months in the same building. " Where is he now?" Jen asked, forcing her voice to sound strictly professional. "He's conducting a site inspection of the west wing construction," Colin replied, handing her a leather-bound folder. " And he specifically requested you to lead the tour of the private residence suites at ten o'clock." "No." Jen blurted out automatically. " Colin, hand that off to Ellen or Precious. I have the quarterly inventory reports to finalize-" " I can't, Jen," Colin interrupted with a helpless look. " He specifically named you. He said if the Assistant Hospitality Manager isn't present to answer operational questions, he'll consider it a breach of contract and freeze the phase two funding. I don't know what his deal is, but he's calling all the shots now." Jen's jaw tightened, a surge of fiery anger burning away her lingering exhaustion. Thomas was playing a game of chicken, using his corporate power to force her into a corner. He wanted to see her bend. He wanted to force her to talk to him. " Fine," Jen said through gritted teeth, taking the folder from his hands. " I'll handle the tour." At exactly ten o'clock, Jen stood near the glass elevators of the private residential tower. She smoothed down her skirt, took three dee, centering breaths and put on her best professional smile. The quiet chime of the private elevator echoed through the high-ceilinged corridor. The double doors slid open, and Thomas stepped out. He looked devastatingly handsome in the morning light. Gone was the formal tuxedo from the night before; instead, he wore a dark navy dress shirt with the top two buttons undone, sleeves rolled up to his forearms to reveal lean, muscular limbs, and dark trousers. His dark hair was slightly tousled by the sea breeze, and his sharp eyes immediately locked onto her the moment he stepped into the foyer. Two intimidating bodyguards followed closely behind him, along with a pair of nervous local project engineers. " Good morning, Mr. Bolduc," Jen said, her tone as crisp and cold as liquid nitrogen. She didn't offer her hand. " Welcome to the Solaria Private Suites, I'll be guiding your walkthrough of the penthouse units today." " Good morning, Miss Delos Santos," Thomas replied, his deep voice smooth and velvet-like. " I appreciate you taking time. I trust you slept well." " Wonderful, Thank you," Jen lied without blinking. She turned on her heel, pointing toward the wide glass hallway. " If you'll follow me, the first penthouse features a three hundred-sixty degree view of the Mactan channel, built with imported Italian marble and customized soundproofing." As they walked through the sprawling, unfinished penthouse suite, Jen kept her presentation flawless. She rattled off square footage, structural load limits, and guest service protocols without making a single mistake, keeping her distance and ignoring the heavy, intense weight of Thomas's stare on her back. Whenever the engineers spoke, Thomas nodded politely, but it was obvious his attention was entirely focused on Jen. Every movement she made, every breath she took, was being scrutinized by the man who used to know her intimately. " The master bedroom opens up to a private infinity pool," Jen explained, stepping onto the massive outdoor balcony overlooking the ocean. " It comes equipped with dedicated staff access, so guests can receive twenty-four-hour service without comprising privacy." " Send the engineers down to review the electrical schematics," Thomas suddenly ordered, his voice cutting through her presentation like a sharp blade. The two engineers blinked in surprise, looking between Thomas and Jen. "Sir?" One of them hesitated. "Leave us," Thomas repeated, a quiet, non-negotiable authority in his tone. " And take security with you. Wait in the lobby." The men didn't dare argue. Within seconds, the heavy glass doors closed behind them, leaving Jen and Thomas completely alone on the high-altitude balcony, suspended between the blue sky and the crashing waves below. Jen felt the air grow instantly charged. She gripped her clipboard tightly, turning around to face him. " You are abusing your position as an investor, Mr. Bolduc." Jen said, dropping her sweet hospitality persona completely. " I am here to conduct a site inspection, not to play your personal mind games." Thomas didn't answer right away. He slowly walked toward her, his long strides closing the distance until he was standing right at the edge of her personal space. The sea breeze whipped his dar hair across his forehead, but his eyes never left hers." " Six months, Jen," Thomas murmured softly, reaching into his inner jacket pocket. " I've signed a six month residential lease for this exact penthouse. I'm moving in next week." Jen's heart dropped into her stomach. " You...... you're staying here?" "I am," Thomas said, pulling a thin, metallic object from his pocket. He held it out toward her in the palm of his hand. Jen glanced down, and her breath caught. It was a small, silver digital voice recorder — scratched at the edges, worn from years of use. It was the exact recorder she had bought him as a parting gift five years ago before he boarded his flight to America. " What is this?" She whispered, backing away a step. " You said I ignored your messages," Thomas said, his voice dropping into a rough, emotional register that sent shivers down her spine. " You said I let them land in a void. But I kept every single one of them every single one of them, Jen. I listened to them while my enemies threatened to burn everything I built." He clicked a small button on the side of the device, A quite static hum filled the air between them, followed by the soft, trembling sound of a voice from five years ago — Jen's voice, younger, tearful, and full of heartbreaking hope: " Babu.... it's me again. It's day forty-two. I miss you so much. Please call me back.... I have something important to tell you...." Jen stared at the device in absolute shock, her eyes wide as tears gathered along her lashes. The last was crashing down on her, loud and merciless. "I hear your voice every day, Jen," Thomas whispered, stepping closer until his shadow completely engulfed her. " Now tell me... what was that secret you were trying to tell me on day forty-two?"
