She expected to dance for monsters. She didn't expect to find her mate in the man who destroyed her life.

Alpha Kai Blackthorn is cold, rich, and lethal. He looks at Emery and sees a pawn. He feels the bond and chooses to break it.

"I, Kai Blackthorn, reject you as my mate."

But Emery is carrying a secret that will set the Northlands on fire. She isn't just a rogue. She is more.

And when she rises, she won't just be his mate, she’ll be his Queen.

An encounter.
"Hello, beautiful." I turned to watch a man step out of a shiny black Mercedes Benz. He wore ripped designer jeans and a tight shirt that showed off his muscles he probably paid to maintain, his neck was covered with gold chains. "Come say hi to daddy, won’t you?" he smirked. My wolf stirred with a warning growl beneath my skin as I took in his scent. A Beta’s son. Not the kind of gig I was after. It was a very cloudy night, the kind that made you want to fall on bed as you watch Netflix and with a bowl of popcorn and a glass of extremely cold sprite drink. I groan in frustration, wiping sweat from my forehead as I walked down the street. It seemed like rain would fall soon or it was just bluffing with the light winds and the smell of rain the distance. But that didn't seem to matter with the amount of perfume that seemed to cling to the very air I breathed in. I stylishly sniffed the air, trying to be sure I had sprayed mine before I left the house. Atta boy! A small smile appeared on my lips as I dusted my dress that clung so tight to my body, the wine material catching every flicker of light from the luxury cars passing by on the quiet road that led to The Bubbly Club. It was pretty late in the night but almost everyone on the road seemed to be heading in that direction. They were dressed in ranges of classy to slutty. A few of the classy ladies wore expensive furred dresses and gowns. The slutty ones wore revealing clothes that could make a driver run into a wall. And looking down at my dress, I smirked because that was exactly where I belonged to. My skin tight dress refused to stay below my ass. Each time I tugged it down, it bounced right back up over my ass. And I wasn't even wearing panties to begin with. It was a sleeveless dress with a slit down the neckline to show off just enough cleavage to get tipped without seeming desperate. My black heels clicked confidently on the pavement, and my red lipstick matched the brightness of my dress. David better be right about this, though. He’d promised me one night at the Bubbly would be enough to land me a really paying gig that could get me enough money to start paying for my brother’s treatment. One night of dancing, of stripping right in front of rich clients. Without a word, I turned on my heel, blocking out his voice and pulling out my phone to message Catelyn, the only person who could talk me down from this storm of nerves. The perfect distraction, my best friend. Me: Hey, Best. You there? A minute passed. Catelyn: Yoooo, sweetheart. I’m here! You done performing already? Me: Like hell I am. I haven’t even gone in. Kinda nervous. Catelyn: Nervous? You’ve got to be kidding me. You’re the best damn stripper I know. Me: You only know me, Catty. Catelyn: Exactly. And I know talent when I see it. I’ve seen you wiggle that ass, girl—you’re a star. Trust me, no one does it better than you. A smile tugged at my lips. That was why I messaged her. Catelyn always knew how to make me laugh, even when I was close to breaking. Me: Careful, I might just marry you if you keep this up. Catelyn: You mean we’re not already married? I smiled at that. Catelyn: Anyways, have fun. You ruined my moment with Shawn. Me: You're still with that dude? I thought you said Maddy stole him from you. Catelyn: You really don't expect me to leave one of my paying clients for that cheap assless b***h, do you? Me: Or you're just in love with him. I sent a smiling emoji along with the text, already knowing what she'd send next. Catelyn: Ewwww I snorted under my breath, about to type a reply when my foot hit something solid. Pain flashed up my leg as I collided hard with... a wall? No. A person. My phone flew from my hand with a clatter as I stumbled backward, heels skidding on the pavement. I braced for impact with the cold ground, but it never came. Strong arms wrapped around my waist, holding me up. My body pressed against a solid chest that smelled of expensive cologne. Shit. I straightened, quickly adjusting my dress. My cheeks burned with embarrassment. My eyes lifted— He wore a dark green tuxedo that looked perfectly tailored. And over his face, a disco green rabbit mask, sparkling under the streetlights. I opened my mouth to thank him—but he spoke first. “Stupid girls. Always glued to their phones.” His thick voice was sharp, biting as he spat at me. “If you’d stained my suit, you’d be hand-washing it right now with your tears.” I blinked. What the hell? Glancing around, I realized I had walked straight into the valet zone, where the guests were arriving. It was my fault. But I wasn’t about to let him talk to me like I was trash under his shiny shoes. “You asshole,” I snapped. “Maybe you should look where you’re going. Or did you bump into me just to have a touch of my body, you p*****t?” I shoved him with my bag. That’s when I saw it. His eyes flashing gold. An Alpha. And from the aura around him, a powerful one Panic jolted through me. My wolf whimpered silently in my chest, already submitting. But I wouldn’t. I was way too stubborn for that. I refused. I turned away, ignoring the look of anger he gave me as I searched the pavement for phone. I picked it up, turning it on to check it's condition. I almost started crying right there when I saw the ink on the screen. Stupid! Stupid! Stupid! I turned to glare at the Alpha and fir a moment, the anger in his eyes seemed to show recognition but I wasn't about to ask him about him as I stormed off. Only when I turned the corner did the burn of his gaze vanish from my back. My knees trembled with adrenaline as I took a long, shaking breath. “s**t,” I muttered, checking the spiderweb c***k on my screen again. Who the f**k was that anyway?
