Chapter One
My eyes opened, feeling startled. What was that? I thought to myself. My dream had left me in a panic. This is not the first time that I have had this dream, well, nightmare. On many occasions, I have seen a man in my dreams, but I have never been able to recognise who he is. From what I can tell, he is young, maybe 27 or 28, muscular but not to the point where he looks like a balloon animal, but the one thing that always stands out to me, are those eyes of his. They are ice blue in colour. Why was it always his eyes that constantly sent shivers down my spine every time I tried to remember the dreams I would have? I just do not understand it. However, instead of worrying about what goes on in my mind when I sleep, I really need to get ready for school. Oh, the joys of being 16 and still going to high school. “Gwen, breakfast is ready”, I heard my mum yell from down in the kitchen. Feeling, but hearing more than anything, my stomach started growling. I walked downstairs and I could smell the delicious scent of apple and cinnamon muffins and blueberry pancakes. Seriously, why does my mum have to cook so much food? I mean, it is only her, myself and my older brother who live here. I walk through the kitchen door, see my mum still slaving away over the stove. I walked up behind her and wrapped my arms around her waist. “Good morning mum, thank you for cooking breakfast, but you don’t have to cook so much”, I chuckled. “I know this, my sweetheart. But you need your strength and one of these days, you will move out and I will not be cooking your food anymore”, she replied sadly. Ugh, why does mum do this to me? It always leaves me feeling miserable when she talks so depressingly. I do not plan on going anywhere for a while, more so because I still have two years left of high school. After eating my fill of muffins and pancakes, I go up to my bedroom and start preparing myself for school. Once I return from having a shower, I have decided to wear my tight, skinny black jeans that have carefully placed rips across the material on the thighs, an ivory white crop top where the sleeves hang off my shoulders and end at my wrists. I have a glimpse at how my clothes look in the mirror, and I believe that I look cute. I decided to do my makeup. However, all I use is a light foundation, mascara and a nude lip gloss. Mmm, perfect! I blow dry my hair and then straighten my wavy hair. Hmm, I look at my hair once I am finished and start thinking how I should finally get it recoloured. It has been months since I dyed my hair to ash blonde and now my regrowth is seriously looking atrocious. I am a natural red head, but it is not like a dark or deep red but more of a light, strawberry blonde. I only dye my hair because, throughout my younger years, I was the target of horrible bullying because of having red hair, so my mum allowed me to change my hair colour. It honestly did not change the bully’s ideas about me, as they kept doing the same thing. If not, it would make it worse. “Caleb! Are you ready yet? It is almost time to go to school!” I yelled out to my brother. Five minutes later, I still did not hear a word from Caleb. I decided to run back up the stairs. As I got to the top and was just about to turn the corner, I ran straight into Caleb’s chest and fell straight to the floor. “f**k, that hurt!’ I complained as I heard Caleb start laughing. I swear, he needs to stop growing at some stage. I mean, he is 17 and already 6 foot 4, not to mention, he has that kind of body that has all the girls wanting to touch it. I have had girls come up to me in school and beg me to introduce them. It is annoying. Sometimes, it is hard to bite my tongue when this happens, because every time a guy comes up to me and starts showing interest, Caleb always must ruin it. I get that he is protective of me since our dad disappeared five years ago, but I cannot live an ordinary life as a teenage girl. Since Caleb wants to keep boys away from me, I admittedly am still a virgin. “Gwen, come on. I’m ready to go now.” Caleb insisted. Grabbing my backpack, I gave mum a kiss on the cheek and headed out the door and got into the passenger seat of Caleb’s car. We ride in silence while listening to some playlist Caleb has on his Spotify. Within 10 minutes, we had pulled up into a car park at school. I get out and am already regretting it as a hoard of girls rush over and start talking to Caleb. “I don’t have the patience for this, Caleb. I will see you later.” I exclaimed while he looked at me, worry spread across his face. I cannot help but giggle as I walked off leaving him with his group of fan girls. Sometimes, I do feel bad for him though, but this is what happens when you have the looks of a god. I walk through the front doors of the school, within seconds, I feel arms wrapped around me. I looked down and noticed the bracelets on the wrists. “Hey Bella,” I beamed. Ahh, I love seeing Bella. She has been my best friend since I was four. She has stuck by my side through everything, and I could not be any more grateful for what she has done for me. I turned around and gave her a hug. I pulled away and looked at the beauty of a young woman. Her pale brown eyes have always been my favourite feature of hers. She has beautiful tanned, olive skin, plump lips and the right number of curves that drive the boy’s crazy. I have always been jealous of her looks, but I know she feels the same way about me, which I think is silly. I have deep forest green eyes, a perfect straight nose and naturally plump lips. I did start going to the local gym over the summer holidays though, and have worked on toning up my body, so I now have the confidence to wear the clothes I now do. “Gwennie, what classes do you have today?” Bella queried. “Umm, I have a double period of gym class this morning, followed by legal studies, ancient history and a double period of advanced maths after lunch”, I stated. I see Bella starting to giggle and I know it is because I take school seriously. I am an A grade student and enjoy my classes. “We never have the same classes, Gwennie”, cried Bella. “I know, but that is only because we have different interests. That does not mean you will not see me, silly.” I reminded her. “But I will see you soon, okay. I am going to head off and get ready for gym.” I gave her a reassuring smile and gave her a hug before turning around and making my way to the school’s gym. It is time to get this class started!
