Despite the cold and the exhausting drudgery of hiking through deep snow, Lorn enjoyed the rest of the day, in a way he hadn’t enjoyed anything for a long time…even the days he’d just spent with Kiri. He’d had grown up in those mountains, and he felt at home there in a way he never really felt at home anywhere else. That was one reason he’d headed this direction when he’d taken his not-actually-authorized leave from the SSIN. Yes, he’d had the message from Javik, but even if he hadn’t, he would have ended up out here. The cabin in which he used to live with his parents wasn’t all that far away, though long-abandoned now, his parents having moved even further into the wilderness after Art Stoddard showed up and turned everything on Peregrine upside down.
