Kiera and Jack looked at Kitto expectantly but for a while he didn't speak. He sipped at his wine and stared past them, his mind elsewhere. Eventually he looked into the fire and began to speak softly. "Bersaba and I grew up together. We lived in the same village. She and her sisters, Ailla, and Kelyn lived with their parents. Bersaba's mother was gifted. She didn't have powers, not like you Kiera, but she was a good woman and what she didn't know about plants and herbs wasn't worth knowing.
