35 Lauren had come over early to help Paul cook. Russ should be arriving at the local train station within the next ninety minutes or so, as his plane had arrived on time. Paul had planned to collect his father from the airport, but Russ insisted he would catch the bus and train. “Mum sent over a cheesecake,” Lauren said. “I put it in the fridge.” So Wendy didn’t totally hate him. Surely she wouldn’t make a cheesecake for a father-in-law she’d never met if she hated them both. Or maybe she was just trying to lighten Lauren’s load.
