12 The hands were around his throat again, and his chest was being crushed. “Help,” he croaked. “Help.” Nothing happened except his breath wheezed through his constricted airways. Joy. The name leapt into his mind. She’d told him what to say. He remembered, but he no longer had air for a full sentence. “Jesus,” he gasped. “Jesus!” The pressure on his neck and chest disappeared as though snatched away. He took a deep breath of cold air. Beautiful cold air. Thankfulness filled him. “Thank you. Thank you, Jesus.” The alarm startled him. Paul turned over, hit the button with his hand, and stared blearily at the clock. 5:45.
